The new Nexus 7 leaks just keep on coming. The venerable @evleaks has just posted a high-resolution press shot of the still-unannounced tablet. It matches up with previous leaks quite nicely.

BPu8PA0CYAAftD_ profilen7

The image shows a device with big top and bottom bezels, a front notification light, and dual speakers on the back. The rear-facing camera is there, as is the sideways Nexus logo. Also, note the odd placement of the front-facing camera.

Update: Side shot.

Another interesting tidbit revealed by the image is a SIM card slot on the lower left (when looked at from the rear). This would seem to indicate Google will launch a version of the new N7 with mobile data out of the gate instead of waiting a few months like last time. No way to confirm LTE support, but we can hope.

    my body is ready

I can understand your hands and eyes and ears, but how is the rest of your body involved? 0_o

  • Baleeted

I want to sell my current N7 for this...

    • Juh

      • Baleeted

I didn't want to until I saw this. That's the worst thing about it.

  • Nabil L

    That bezels.

    • Ivan Myring

      Bad Grammar!
      It should be
      Dem Bezels

  • Karlo

But will i be able to make phone calls whit it?

    • Ror

I assume you must exclusively wear cargo pants and have bear hands.

      • mateorod

I assume that the phone lobbies have kidnapped your brain and are holding it for ransom.

The only people who should be invested in users having two different devices when one could do the trick are hardware manufacturers. I also consider the finally dying "I don't want to look stupid taking a picture with a tablet" idiots to be victims of the same marketing scam.

        • lordmerovingian

Come on, let it out. Something's really grinding your gears....

      • TY

Bluetooth earphones, guys, bluetooth earphones. Why do everyone assume that one has to hold the whole tablet to one's ears?

      • Karlo

Look at Huawei MediaPad Lite it can make phone calls.I know its crap tablet but yeah it can make phone calls.

        • Ror

Again, unless you exclusively wear cargo pants and have large hands I don't see how thats an ideal phone experience. A phone should e able to go anywhere you are, not only when you have a bag.

    • TY

Most probably, limited to internet phone calls e.g. Skype. Cost constraints.

      • VAVA Mk2

Groove IP + Google Voice Account = Win

  • Phill_S

Lol, after introducing the vertical layout "phone style" OS mode they went and put the Nexus logo horizontal

    • Alexei Watson

It works in landscape and portrait?

      • Justin Swanson

        • VAVA Mk2

If you change the DPI of the original Nexus 7 (using an app like ROM Toolbox Lite), the tablet reorients itself into landscape as the default.

  • Ruben Martinez Jr.

An interesting new design. It's clearly meant to be held in landscape mode, hence the sideways logo. Those bezels aren't there for show, they're there for comfortable holding.

    • aNYthing6

Speakers are right where you'd place your hands, so that part confuses me.

      • Krzysztof Jozwik

With bezels that big, why not front facing speakers.

      • Derail Doax

Same reason the Kindle Fire HD speakers are located where they are on the back sides. The placement means your hands automatically cup the sound right towards you. And the Fire HD sounds awesome!

Obviously from my avatar I own a HTC One and a Note 2. I was convinced of the One's front facing speakers greatness until I realized my Note 2's single speaker is actually louder and still sounds good. But it doesn't have the rich sound range the One does. Still when it comes to listening to Google Play All Access I tend to listen with my Note 2... Sad .

        • Jeffrey Heesch

You listen to music with built-in phone speakers? Get yourself a set of headphones, man!

          • Colin Kealty

Eh, in a home setting without people around, I much prefer listening to music through a speaker than headphones

    • jm9843

Or the logo is oriented in landscape to provide a visual cue for working with the existing Nexus 4 charging orb.

    • Ruben Martinez Jr.

I just hope Google gives landscape mode on Android 4.3 a minor (at least) revamp, as currently it's a bit unattractive.

  • ddpacino

  • kindrudekid

I want this, in 3 days of release!

    • JonJJon

Google will comply in 3-6 weeks.

      • victorvics

according to leaks it will in stores end of this month

        • JonJJon

And out of stock a few hours to a day later :P

          • victorvics

then go grab it from best buy or staples. there are rumor about that too.

  • Mr. Mark

man, why can't more manufacturers use front facing speakers? our ears aren't behind the tablet!

    • ddpacino

    • https://twitter.com/KryptosXLayer2 KryptosXLayer2

HTC did there job well on you, apparently......

      • Mr. Mark

it makes sense, does it not?

        • https://twitter.com/KryptosXLayer2 KryptosXLayer2

The commercial was a refreshing jab at the S4, but the One won't even sell a tenth of what the S4 will, no matter how hard HTC will bash Samsung over it.... personally, the S4 won my money, just like all other Galaxy S phones had previously

          • Mr. Mark

that's nice and all, but im only talking about front facing speakers. nothing else. fwiw, i wont be purchasing the htc one any time soon.

          • http://www.Nave360.com Sebastian Gorgon

wow mate we are talking about front facing speakers, not if the Shit4 won your money.

          • https://twitter.com/KryptosXLayer2 KryptosXLayer2

Easy there, killer..... everyone's been talking front facing speakers BECAUSE of the HTC One, no one really cared or noticed when Samsung did it on the Galaxy Tabs or when the 1st Gen N7 didn't have them!

          • Krzysztof Jozwik

Noone noticed em on the N10 either. HTC was the first to the idea, I'm surprised they haven't pulled an Apple and sued anyone who did the whole front facing speaker thing.

          • Pradeep Viswanathan R

Go and checkout how both of them sounds and come and talk! HTC has done is lot better.

          • QwietStorm

Soo Samsung did there job well on you then? Repeatedly?

      • Alexei Watson

        Or the nexus 10.
I really am reluctant to get another device with speakers on the back.

Just as I don't face my stereo speakers in to the wall.

    • Sergio

Maybe they need some time to redesign their devices line. I think we'll see that in 2014. Back stereo mics won't be bad either...

  • http://danielbrierton.ie Daniel Brierton

Really wish they'd put the speakers on the front, but at least they're on the curved edge, so shouldn't get muffled when lying flat on its back.

  • JonJJon

It's a shame they had to put the front facing camera off centre this time due to putting the speaker/s up top as well :-/ ah well. Not sure why they bothered with a rear camera this time. I don't need to upgrade to this one as my current Nexus 7 going fine, I will wait for the Nexus 7 version 3. Still hopefully they can have proper supply for the demand they will hopefully get for it.

    • Alexei Watson

I think it makes sense (camera position) - if you're in a video call such as hangouts, holding the phone in landscape is more natural, to fit in the thumbnails for each participant.

When you're holding the tab in landscape, a centred camera is easily obstructed by your thumb/palm when just holding the tablet naturally.

      • Justin Swanson

        I had similar thoughts.

      • JonJJon

I personally only use my N7 in portrait for hangouts/skype and also for web browsing and news reading. But tbh since I bought the nexus 4 I have used my Nexus 7 less and less and probably won't bother with another tablet and just put the money towards a better laptop.

  • BrianLipp

god damn, why even have the events anymore Google? Just release the things, we know everything about them now!

    • VAVA Mk2

We do not know what is new in 4.3 though. I am hoping at the event they will give a teaser of KLP with a full unveiling in the fall when they announce the Nexus 5 :D

  • MagickalMike

Those are quite the chunky top & bottom bezels...

  • Alaa Hallaq

    Looks great!

  • Phill_S

The design is really really weird.

Its clearly designed to be used horizontally held in the right hand on the right/bottom edge with the left hand manipulating the touchscreen.

Which is awesome for those of us sinister lefties but for you righties its all backwards.

  • Tydilicious

The device will come with 4.3, look at the clock !

    • Daniel DS

  • NoBullet

Remember that Hangouts app video from Google showed a tablet with an LED light flashing? People denied it was the new Nexus 7. Ha.

    • Simon Belmont

I was thinking the same thing. Good point bringing that up.

I bet a lot of folks had forgotten about that video. Also kind of indicates the final design of the new N7 had been finalized a while ago.

    • Pradeep Viswanathan R

i missed it, can you share it please?

  • Phillip Huynh

I literally only had my Nexus 7 for an hour until rumors started popping up about a new Nexus 7...

    • Derail Doax

      Return or resell it now.

    • jessem1323

So you bought your nexus 7 a couple of months ago? Rumors have been circulating for a while. No surprises.

    • Krzysztof Jozwik

Did you get your Nexus 7 8 months ago?

  • Simon Belmont

So, I guess my question is, why do they put the NEXUS in landscape, when they want you to hold it in portrait for the front facing camera? It's kind of weird.

Not to mention the speaker placement. They'll be covered up being held in landscape.

    • enoch861

They want to fit the biggest logo they can without having it look weird. Landscape works perfectly for that.

      • Simon Belmont

Haha. But that font size in the NEXUS would actually fit in portrait too.

Look at the pictures above. It's not THAT big.

  • http://george.merloc.co George Merlocco

I really hope they use a different NAND chip to fix the poor I/O performance of the first Nexus 7. I had a TF101 which suffered from the same bottleneck. Hear me now ASUS!

    • Barnassey

It actually wasnt the NAND chip that was causing it. It was the fact the software didnt have TRIM automatically working in background.

      • http://george.merloc.co George Merlocco

Noted, complete with downvote! Thanks Barnassey...but yep, that. :D

      • Ivan Myring

        What does trim do?
I have that lagfix app that says it does TRIM, but what is it?

        • Colin Kealty

TRIM is essentially "garbage removal", so here's how it goes: when you have a like 2 GB file on your tablet and you delete it, it deletes instantly, even though in reality it would take a fair amount of time to really delete it, but that's because it's not ACTUALLY deleting it, it's marking that area as "Free". So, normally, if you want to write to that section later, you'd have to actually erase what's there and write the new stuff, taking precious IO time. Here's where TRIM comes in. TRIM takes unused IO and CPU cycles and starts actually deleting stuff that's been marked free, so as to make writes in the future faster. Without TRIM over time, every block of data has at some point had something on it and will need to be cleared, thus slowing down the whole system

        • Barnassey

TRIM tells the operating system that a block on the NAND is open and ready for writing to. If the os doesn't support it then with every write operation it has to read to make sure the block isn't being used.

  • Zach Mauch

Side by Side with the original based on screen size. Looks to be both thinner and taller.

    New: 204.5x115.6 mm
    Orig: 198.5x120 mm

    • Kie

This is a bit upsetting as I mostly use my n7 for reading. On occasion I have wished for slightly bigger side bezels (using in portrait) and have never wanted bigger top and bottom bezel. The form factor has less of what I want, and more of what I dont want

      • Zach Mauch

Honestly I would bet you are in the minority here. I am excited for this because I palm my nexus. It will make it easier to handle.

      • TY

Can't you grab both the sides with one hand? Or is it uncomfortable? 11.6cm shouldn't be much for a hand. Also, the thickness seems to be around 8.5mm, and I think this time the Nexus 7 will be much lighter.

      • Kie

I do palm it sometimes but it becomes uncomfortable at times and while sitting in certain positions. The most comfortable way for me is to grab it at the side (pardon the blurry photo).

    • VAVA Mk2

The new one has 4:30 in the time (4.3 reference?) and the OG has 4:10 as the time (OG launched with 4.1). We are def getting 4.3 on this and it will be announced on Wednesday at the press conference.

      • Laurentiu

    • Nexus7Forum.com

Should be good for movie viewing though. Holding the side bezels will be comfortable.

    • Jillxz

Why such large bezels. Looks awful.

  • AK

The clock being 4:30 is even more confirmation of Android 4.3 at launch.

  • http://shanked.me/ Shank

I recall seeing a Nexus 7 with a notification light in the Google+ Hangouts video. I'm glad it's getting one, but I don't see the point if I already have a phone with a notification light too.

    • Alexei Watson

I have apps on my tab that I don't have on my phone. i.e. tapatalk.

+ sometimes at home I just don't have my phone on me, the tab becomes the primary couch device.

      • http://shanked.me/ Shank

That's a good point - I just hope people take advantage of sync'd notifications, or it'll be annoying to deal with two devices flashing for gmail, etc.

        • Alexei Watson

yeah, twitter and facebook are both offenders, i get fb notifications on both, and have to clear them on both. minor annoyance

  • miri

The more I look at it, the more I like it. Yeah, the bezels are thick, but you can get used to it.

  • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

    Side shot added.

  • johnny

    Need less bezel

  • GazaIan

Rear speakers killed it for me.

  • bat0nas

    What an ugly bezel.. :(

    • Ivan Myring

      What a sexy bezel.. :)

  • B

Recently got current gen nexus 7 for my better half and I m getting the new nexus 7 :)

  • Nexus7Forum.com

Looks pretty slick. Also note the headphone jack up top and the small 'ASUS' logo on the back bottom juxtaposed horizontally.

  • Mobile OS World

Moto X has also got its specs roaming around on the internet http://www.mobileosworld.com/2013/07/moto-x-gets-specs-leaked-again.html

  • supresmooth

I'm not entirely sure why they moved the mini jack to the top. I really don't want the cord dangling in front of the screen, which is why the bottom placement made sense. Why would they move that?

  • saltyzip

Credit card is at the ready!

  • Sosomobile

They are now on Apple's way.. What is new? Nothing is new... (One shitty camera is not a big deal for me) :-))))

    • Ivan Myring

Better screen, processor, more ram, probably LTE, thinner, lighter. Not enough for ya?

  • Boris

It has card reader? Probably not!

  • Ittiam

This one is turning out to be a perfect device... If the price drops to $200 in 6 months, nothing like it

  • anzensepp1987

Shut up and take my money!

  • GigaCode

    I can't wait anymore
