GALAXY Note II Product Image_Key Visual

Rumors have been flying around the net for the past few days that Samsung is going to skip updating the Note II to 4.2.2 for [presumably] Android 4.3. Up until now there hasn't been much that backed this rumor, but Australia's Telstra network has all but confirmed this to be the case on its device update page.

If you read the above highlighted note in full, you'll see that "Samsung have [sic] elected globally to skip the 4.2.2 update or this device and will instead go to a newer version of Android" (emphasis ours). This would seemingly indicate that no versions of the Note II will receive a bump in Android version until we see 4.3, which should be announced next week at Google's press event. We've reached out to Samsung for comment, but haven't yet gotten a response.

Unfortunately, we've no idea how long it will take Sammy to push the update out after 4.3 is official, but given its track record over the last couple of years, it likely won't take long.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

    A good thing IMO.

  • Floris

They probably were far in with their 4.2 update, as seen from the recent leaks. I think they decided they could better implement 4.3 first instead of perfecting 4.2 and later again 4.3.

  • Kevin Mirsky

I assume this will apply to the S3 as well? I believe the rumor before was that they'd both be updated in July.

As long as you don't have a US or Canadian version (so if you have the i9300/i9305/T-variants), you should be good. As in you won't have to wait like a year until you get the update.

  • ProductFRED

THIS is how all manufacturers should think. Not, "Well, one of our recent flagships is on 4.0. Better update it to 4.1 instead of 4.3."

    • sivkai

Actually, if Samsung wanted to set a good precedent, it should have released 4.2.2 already for the Note.

      • ProductFRED

Easier said than done. I would have appreciated it, but I'd rather wait for 4.3 than have 4.2.2. 4.2 didn't add THAT much over 4.1.2. The Note 2 can already do most of the things the Galaxy S4 can.

4.2 Bluetooth is kind of broken. IMO better to wait.

  • MasterMuffin

This is a win situation for consumers AND Samsung. We'll get the latest faster and Samsung don't have to first make stable 4.2.2 and then 4.3

-"but given its track record over the last couple of years"

Anyone else not remember how long it took to get an update on the Samsung Epic?

      Sprint failure

Nice play Samsung, but not everyone is a kid.

  • Matthew Fry

Actually, I think it's ok in British English (used in Australia) to refer to corporations as a plural.

    • daniel sutton

It's actually any organization comprised of multiple people. So sports teams, race teams, legislative bodies, NGO s and other entities can be used as plural. The [sic] is unnecessary

  • skidooo

So now instead of waiting 6 months for 4.2.2 we now have to wait probably 6 more months for 4.3. Lame, but typical.

    • Justin W

I don't know that it will be that long.. Look at the S4 - it had 4.2.2 about 2 months after Google rolled it out to N4's. Besides that, Samsung already has 4.3 in-house, which can be evidenced by the GS 4 GPE, and my bet is they've already started skinning it.

    • USSENTERNCC1701E

      Woops. Wrong comment.

  • abcdefg

This is quite logical. 4.3 is more like a bug fix update.

  • David Allen

I will believe it when I see it on my Note II.

  • Hotzigetty

Samsung did this for the galaxy S advance as well. 2.3 to 4.1.

  • SadCamper

Nah were just too lazy to make a 4.2.2 for Note II cause were busy with newer models and stuff so just wait for 4.3.... after a while.... nah were too lazy to make a 4.3 just wait for the next version

  • Dave

That is good news. I just hope they release it sooner.

  • Dave

    Just release it already!
