While LG originally announced the Optimus G Pro "Value Pack" back in March, at the time it was in reference to the Korean version of the device. The G Pro has since been released on AT&T Value Packless, but it appears that's finally changing: LG has officially announced that the VP upgrade will be hitting AT&T G Pro handsets very soon. While it sadly does not include an Android version bump, it does add a host of new features. Here they are:

  • Smart Video intelligently recognizes the position of a user's eyes, automatically pausing the video when the user looks away and then restarting it once they resume active viewing.
  • Dual Camera, an extension of the Dual Recording feature, lets users simultaneously capture photos of the subject and the shooter using both the front and back cameras for a picture-in-picture composition, so both sides of an experience are snapped and saved.
  • Pause & Resume Recording allows user to pause video in record mode and then restart the recording to create one continuous video file.
  • Magic Remote Pad is designed to work with LG Smart TVs released in 2012 and after, allowing for smoother, more intuitive navigation.
  • Text Keypad transforms LG Optimus G Pro into a convenient input device for LG Smart TVs.
  • The Home Button LED now also gives users the ability to customize alerts as well as the LED color of notifications from their favorite contacts.
  • Additionally, users can now select from 800 color emoticons when texting or emailing.

The new pause and resume recording is a fairly neat feature, though Smart Video and Dual Camera are rather blatant ripoffs of equivalent functions in the Galaxy S4. As you might guess, there are likely a litany of bug fixes and other small enhancements included in this OTA update, which I'm assuming is quite large.

The update should be rolling shortly, if it has not already.

And people say Samsung copies Apple. LG has been blatantly coping Samsung ever since the s3. Come on LG. You can do better.

    • PamelaLibrarian

They may be copying some of Samsung, but at least they didn't copy Touch Wiz. I hate that horrid skin. The Optimus G Pro is gorgeous in real life. I really like it.

    • FritoDorito

Except that this Value Pack and its features were announced back in March. BEFORE the Galaxy S4.

though I like what LG is doing, smart video and dual camera are definitely ripped right from samsung :/ wish there was some way to make it better, like crediting samsung with the idea? Meh, maybe the feature was in production before samsung released those features.. I doubt it, but it's hard to say for sure..

Even if they were being developed before Samsung announced the features, the level of copying is uncanny. Granted, some of these features are probably very easy to implement, and could be slapped together in a few weeks. LG even deliberately announced its video pause feature the day before the S4 unveiling, when everyone knew it was going to be in the S4.

It's rather hard to believe this kind of thing is a coincidence when it just keeps happening over and over.

      • Colin Kealty

Guess I'm just trying to give the benefit of the doubt, I want to believe there will be innovation in the optimus G2 cause of how beautiful it looks, but it just looks less and less likely every week.

I think the worst part may just be the stupid naming. Samsung puts a stupid label on their software upgrades, and LG just so happens to do it, too.

  • Liam Spurr

    No, LG. Just no.

  • Richard Markert

Nothing here yet. I want that LED settings thingy.

Yeah, I checked on my review unit as well, and there's nothing (then again, I got a "Device not registered" error, so who knows). I've asked LG about specific timing, and I'll update when I get a response.

      • Richard Markert

I just got the "Software Update Available" popup. I'm leaving the house at the moment, but I'll do the update later.

        • http://www.androidpolice.com/ David Ruddock

I got it as well, so it's safe to say rollout is happening now.

New OTA by LG : Phone model updated to Optimus G Pro S4.

  • Chris Burner

Dual recording is not new to this phone. I picked mine up July 1 and had it out of the box.

Just woke up. Realized you said dual camera. Shame on me.
