Use Uber? Love Google stuff? Good news – the two have become wed. Well, sort of wed. Uber just received a fairly major update that bakes a couple of significant Google services into the app: the ability to sign in/up with your Google account, and the option to pay with Google Wallet.

That's not all, either – the company will knock $10 off your fare the first time you should elect to use Wallet as your payment method. New Uber members get an even better deal: if you sign up now and pay for your first ride with Wallet, you'll score a savings of $20. Not bad at all.

The updated app is available now in the Play Store, though existing Uberers will have to wait for it to hit their respective devices.

Pay with Wallet has been a feature in the Uber app for awhile now. Almost 2 months I think.

Weird. They even announced this here: http://blog.uber.com/2013/07/08/googlewallet/

      • JordanMcRae

Ya here is a blog post from May 15th announcing it. http://blog.uber.com/2013/05/15/ride-with-uber-pay-with-google/ I think today's blog post is announcing a $10 off promotion when you use Google Wallet

Well, if it's true, then it's certainly misleading. The What's New section of the app listing was updated today with the same info as well...

Seems like they rushed to get Wallett support out in time for Google I/O but only started pushing (advertising/marketing) it now

now if only the city of Austin wouldn't be such an asshole and would allow services like Uber to exist in my city.

    • Matt

Hey, man, come on. Austin's one of the coolest cities in the entire country. You've got SXSW, Austin City Limits, UT-Austin, Richard Linklater, tons of amazing bands like Spoon. No need to badmouth Austin over a minor issue like Uber.

      • Colin Barnett

Don't get me wrong, I love Austin. I want to grow old here. But the truth of the matter is the city has horrible traffic (that's only getting worse) and worse public transportation/mass transit.

The city only grants 270 taxi licences. That's not a typo. Two hundred and seventy cabs. It also shuts down car services it deems too "taxicab like". In a place that is growing as fast as Austin is there needs to be better infrastructure to help people get around.

I used Uber in D.C. back in March and it really made me realize what I'm missing out on. I think it's perfectly reasonable for me to express to voice this criticism when it's something that will only make it more enjoyable for residents and visitors.

San Francisco limits the number of taxi licenses too. Luckily though private services like Lyft and Uber are available.

If only the article had at least explained what uber was

I was thinking the same thing lol

      Haha agreed!

How do you sign on the website with your Google account?? You can do it on the app but not on the uber website.
