Scarcely a day has passed since the Google Play Edition Galaxy S4 and HTC One went on sale, and their software bits are already floating around online. You can grab the files to get the new red SunBeam live wallpaper, boot animation, and updated camera app on your device. These are only confirmed working on AOSP-based devices, and 4.1.2 TouchWiz in the case of the camera. Do be careful!

The new boot animation is a group of spinning Google-color dots. It's a nice-looking animation and it's not hard to install. Place the ZIP in /system/media and then fix permissions rw-r-r- with a root file explorer and reboot (note that this will overwrite the current animation). Alternatively, you can just push the file over ADB to data/local without messing around in a root file explorer, but it might not always work. Here's a guide to help you along. Get the file (1.73MB) below:

The camera app has the updated finger-friendly setting menu, volume toggle shutter control, and probably some other tweaks. Everything should work with the exception of editing pics in the Gallery. Grab the APK(16.7MB):

The live wallpaper can be installed normally. The file (60 KB) is right here:

Updated with better files that don't need root for camera and wallpaper.

    Does the camera have photosphere?

You can place the boot animation in data/local as well.

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Indeed, though in my experience that doesn't always work. The only sure way to install it that works in 100% of the cases is to replace the original boot animation. But yeah, /data/local may work.

  • Metroview

This is why I'm glad I switched from iOS to Android... because of the awesomeness of the community is with sharing among a lot of other things. Thank you for these!

  • Ryuuie

Hitting the volume button when in the Camera app lets you take a photo. :3

Nexus devices now have a dedicated (sort of) camera button!

    • Justin Crowley

dude this is awesome,, thanks for the info!!!!!

The biggest update for me. Tapping the screen was always awkward when trying to hold it up and take a picture.

    • Carlos Rodríguez

That feature was on the updated camera app.

The new feature is that the whole display doesn't rotate like before, only the screen pauses for like half a second and then the icons rotate.

It's a nice change because before it took so long to rotate the viewfinder before taking a photo.

how to backup old came app and flash new?
    Plz reply...

  • Stacey

Anyone know how to get the editor working again?

    • br_hermon

Knock on wood but... the editor works just fine for me. Gnex BB 4.1.2

  • Jooyoung Hong

Any idea how to get the bootanimation working on a Samsung Touchwiz ROM (S4)?
    bootanimation is handled weirdly..
tried putting it in media as well as data/local, with no luck.
deleted the samsung bootanimation files but the phone boots up with a black screen..

    • Jeremy Bryant

I believe its a limitation of the Touchwiz kernel. This probably only works with AOSP-based ROMs.

    • Benjamin Pavel

Your best bet is to ask for a support on XDA Forums, preferably Q&A section. =)

    • fixxmyhead

Won't work cuz Samsung uses qmg files for the boot animation. I hated this when i had my s2

    • http://rodneysolomonjr.net Rodney Solomon

After doing the data/media thing on my S3 I needed to go into custom recovery and wipe cache, dalvik, and fix permissions... then it worked.

Will this give Galaxy Nexus users the HDR feature?

    • Russell Walker

      I don't have it.

    • Simon Belmont

Use an HDR app from the Google Play Store. Android 4.3 might give us G'Nex owners stock HDR.

I dunno why they don't. HDR is all done in the software.

      • Kansja

Because Software recombination of pictures is very slow even on PC's and the ISP on the Galaxy Nexus doesn't support HDR

        • Simon Belmont

You sure? Even my previous phone, and EVO 3D, which has 1GB of RAM, and arguably a SLIGHTLY lower performing dual-core CPU than the G'Nex's has HDR in its stock Sense 3.6 ROM.

My EVO 3D takes HDR pictures quickly. They process quickly as well and look great. I think there is either another reason the G'Nex doesn't have HDR or Google just wanted it to a be a Nexus 4 feature initially. Hopefully, they'll relent in Android 4.3 and lay it on the G'Nex.

Photosphere seems to work much better in this version. It's actually useful :D

    • Benjamin Pavel

The stitching is much more accurate.
Just quick and sloppy photosphere in my dark room and it stitched perfectly!

  • David Margolin

gotta say... not the biggest fan of the new cam interface... in theory... its supposed to be easier to use but in practice... its just really awkward...

  • Android wins!

Dat wallpaper! Sadly, a bit low FPS.

  • http://ramonnavarro.tumblr.com Ramon Navarro

No HDR mode, Scene mode is completely messed up with wrong labelling, is this how it looks on Google Play Edition Galaxy S4 and HTC One phones? ....but i'm seriously loving PhotoSphere mode!

    • noob1

there is a fixed scene mode here on xda

      thumbsup so others can see

      • http://ramonnavarro.tumblr.com Ramon Navarro

But it's for rooted phones only, I'm just that Camera JB+ updates the app with these features!

    • Stacey Liu

I still see HDR on ym N4.

  • Ben Napper

I'm somewhat stunned that this works on my Stock Evo LTE without any apparent issues, given the struggles that the custom ROM side of things has had with supporting cameras. An HDR mode would be icing on the cake, but this makes me very happy.

    • Cherokee4Life

I was thinking the same thing. Works flawlessly on my stock EVO LTE as well

  • Rory

Here's a little GIF of it I just made if you're interested in what the new boot animation looks like before installing:

    • Carlos Rodríguez

Er, mmm, I still have the old X bootanimation.

  • ppero196

Editing in gallery works. S3 Mini CM 10.1 .Photosphere also works

  • beboo

For LG Optimus 4X HD ( not rooted ) every thing works fine Except the
Photo Sphere it takes the first shot and then force close :( to bad
i think it's not optimized for tegra 3 devices :(

  • Sir_Brizz

There is a flashable version of the camera that installs a couple of required libraries. Once I put this on, no more auto focus freezing on my GS3 with Pacman :) I can finally have a working camera with Picasa sync!! woot woot!

    • imtoomuch

Where did you get this version?

  • Ryan O’Neill

The camera app doesn't have the option to choose between internal or external storage.

Maybe it was taken from the HTC One. Is that option present on the Google Edition GS4?

  • Ricardo Steve

I might be hallucinating, but - what if that new boot animation is a little sneak-peek of the next Android big update's design? I mean, all the updates to the Play Store and other Google Apps have showed us a cleaner, sleeker interface. But maybe this is also showing us something?

Or I just kind of want the 5.0 or whatever update to happen :P

  • suprah

anyone having front facing camera freezing issues?

  • vinzZ

Am I the only one thinking "Super NES" when I see that boot animation?

  • Oliver Harris

I wonder if someone could do something like this but for the lockscreen and possibly the home screen. Unlikely but worth a shot

  • Ashok Soni

You won't get FC when editing images in gallery if you install it as a user app, putting it as a system app will produce FCs..

  • David Lambert

Anyone else having video centers issues? Video is very blurry and out of focus.
