If your device has Android 4.1 or higher, a new Google Search update is rolling out in the Play Store that brings a handful of new and useful features, which includes a couple of additional voice actions:

What's in this version:

For Android 4.1+ (Jelly Bean):
- Information about shows you're watching on your internet-connected TV (US only)*
- Saved offers when nearby a redemption location
- New voice action: play music from your phone or the Play Store
- Voice actions tips
* Requires phone/tablet to be on the same network as your TV

DetectShow NikWallenda

The most notable new features here are of course TV show information and voice actions to play music. The former will require an internet-connected TV on the same network as your device before it'll be able to pull the info, and unfortunately it's US-only for the time being. The latter, however, should be a welcome addition to all 4.1+ devices, as it finally brings the ability to fire up some tunes using nothing more than your voice.

Like all new updates, this one is staged so it should be hitting your device shortly.

Update: Here's the APK for anyone who doesn't want to wait:

Cameron Summerson
Cameron is a self-made geek, Android enthusiast, horror movie fanatic, and musician. When he's not pounding keys here at AP, you can find him spending time with his wife and kids, plucking away on the 6- or 7-string, or watching The Texas Chainsaw Massacre on repeat.

  • JensAstrup

The former, not the latter, will require an internet-connected TV

  • redthunda69

    You said latter twice!

  • Mskina

You already can play a song saying it. At least in spanish, with " Reproducir -name of the song- "

  • Cory_S

How exactly does the internet TV part work, anyone know? I I doubt if I'm watching cable, but my TV is connected to the internet that that would work. What about watching Hulu over the PS3? Don't really understand what services it is compatible with.

    • thewafflehouse

      Likely Google TV.

      • Cory_S

Ah, it really shows how bad the brand is doing when they have to say "Internet connected TV" instead of Google TV :)

        • Matthew Fry

It's gotta be Google TV though. How would it integrate with other brands?

        • thewafflehouse

Is it? It might also work with other "Smart TV's" if they broadcast what they are playing over the network.

Saying "Internet Connected TV" isn't saying the platform is doing bad. I suspect it is, if your TV pulls listings from the web it should work. PS3 with Hulu clearly wouldn't work because that's not an Internet Connected TV. If you can browse the web on your TV, that's Internet Connected.

          • Cory_S

What I'm saying it it is overly vague. I have an internet connected "Smart" TV. it does not use Google TV. If I bring it up I have options ranging from Netflix to Vudu. None of those would work, but by the description of the update it would.

          • thewafflehouse

I'd have to disagree, the screenshot that was uploaded to G+ https://plus.google.com/+android/posts/XhbKbbmRvEM (which hopefully will be put in the Play Store soon) shows a piece of text that says "Live TV," that's not vague at all. That's pretty clear, if it was any type of TV it would say "Watching TV."

    • PhilNelwyn

      From +Google:

"TV Cards: If you have an internet-connected TV, Google Now can help unlock more information about what you’re watching. Just connect your Android device to the same network that your TV is on and tap “Listen for a TV show” in Google Now."

      That probably works over Wi-Fi.

    • Cory_S

Looks like we were all wrong. It needs just what it says it needs...an Internet connected TV. It looks like it searches your network for the TV only to see if the TV is on (hence show the card) it then can use the mic to listen to the show to tell you what it is. Clever.

I still think I'd rather it work like the music search does though.

  • Droid

    Teardown, Teardown !

  • Liam Spurr

Is there any way to set a default music player? On my s3 it defaults to the crappy touchwiz one.

    • Bjajjull

Well, first time I chose Play Music, now that's the default.

    • Matthew Fry

Go into the music player in Application Manager and scroll to the bottom and tap clear defaults.

    • JPB

It keeps the last one you chose as the top choice/default.

  • Owen Finn

Does the Voice action work for streamed music from Google Play?

  • Sven Joy

I still have the feeling that nearly every voice action is US only...

  • just a simple Q

what is "play music from your phone or the Play Store"?

We have always been able to hit the mic and say "Play xxxx" and it will go to that artist/song in the music app chosen as default. Play from play store? I'm confused.

    • Goldenpins

yep and also play a song while google now is on and tells you the track name.

    • miri

      It's been broken for ages

    • Jdban

Also lets you select default app to play songs: http://i.imgur.com/z8uq4ad.png

      • Matthew Fry

It doesn't change the default for me. It keeps defaulting to the Samsung Music app I've never used.

      • Royal2000H

I've been able to change the default as well. I've done this to search songs on Spotify in the past. So nothing changed?

    • JPB

Nice but that's been in Google Now/Search for several weeks now, since Google Play All Access was introduced. Not sure why they're calling it "new" now.

  • just a simple Q

and when the heck is the GS4 and HTC one google edition going to be in the play store? Supposed to be today!!!!

    • yankeesusa

      Already there. Look again

    • Jordan

I got GS4 and have the update. It was automatic.

  • miri

Does this mean they've fixed the "Listen to"command?

  • Dan Carter

The music feature doesn't work at all. Most of the time it just takes me to a google seach for what I'm asking it to play. When it did actually find the song I was attempting to play, when I tapped on "Play Music" it went to the music app and played the wrong song. I've tried about 10 times or so and haven't gotten it to work once. I've tried:

    Play "song title" by "artist"

Play song "song title" by "artist"

Play music "song title" by "artist"

Listen to "song title" by "artist"

I just tried "Listen to The Knife" and it brought up an image of the artist The Knife (correctly). When I tapped to play, it played Mac the Knife by Ella Fitzgerald. Asking it to play Love is All by The Tallest Man on Earth brings up the correct song in Google Now, but when you tap to play it plays some song my Marc Anthony. This is really bad.

Anyone get this to work for them?

    • Matthew Fry

Kinda works like crap for me too. Asking for "[song title] by [artist]" never pulls up the music app. Asking for just the artist pulled a card up for a music app but defaulted to the Samsung app despite Play Music being my default. When I switched it to Play Music and tapped it it just pulled up a search within Play Music.

  • yankeesusa

And it just keeps getting better! I love google now.

  • HebeGuess

Kinda weird, my search app actually receiving silent auto update like play & play services. I go straight to play store right after finished reading, TaDa app already updated and double checked on auto-update option it was off. Anyone?

    • Jordan

      Mine is same way

  • LGOG

i've downloaded the apk and when i go to install it says that it failed. I have an LG OG from sprint.

  • Bleakvision

Ah, guys, I just tried mirror 4 and got four different popup windows plus a holo style popup alert, telling me to "repair" my phone.

    Please ditch that hosting service.

  • andy_o

Mirror #1 file is corrupt just in case. #2 works fine.

  • jamaall

You know what I would like? For them to fix the SEARCH part of the app!! It barely even functions any more for me. I end up going onto chrome and thats slow too.

    • Jake

This update to version 2.6.7.721924.arm, fixed my problem with slow initial searches. After installig it and rebooting the phone the very first search took took about 8 seconds, but after that every search has only taken a second or two. This is true for both my GNex and my N7.

  • ynksbsbll2

I've noticed you can now say "Open [name of app]". I don't recall that being in previous versions.

    • Simon Belmont

      No. That's been around awhile.

I was using that at least since Christmas with my Nexus 7. I think it was around with Android 4.1, even.

      • ynksbsbll2

Ah OK, I guess I've just never tried it before.

        • Simon Belmont

          Yeah. It's pretty useful.

I use it if an app is buried somewhere in my app drawer. Yep, laziness.

  • Jeffrey Waring

Any chance this will work with a google TV box, not just a connected TV? Beleaguered Revue owner here

  • http://www.facebook.com/lucyparanormal Daniel Tiberius

I can't get it to play music at all through voice commands. Anyone have any suggestions of what I should say to it?

  • Matthew Edwards

Does it have to be connected to an actual TV set, or will it work with my wifi-connected Dish box?

  • Peter Papoulakos

Latest update won't work play voice requested artist on my GS3 had to uninstall. It worked with the previous version
