Hangouts for Android is receiving its first Play Store update - on a staged rollout basis - today, fixing a few notable bugs, and promising enhanced performance in unspecified ways. Here's the rather short changelog:

1.0.2
● Fixed a problem where you could receive two notifications for a message: one from Hangouts, one from the old Talk app.
● Audio issues in video calls on some Android 2.3x (Gingerbread) devices, including the Droid Charge, should now be resolved.
● Bug fixes and better performance.

The double notification issue isn't one I'd heard of, but obviously that'd be quite annoying if you were experiencing it. The Gingerbread-specific audio fix is also probably welcome, considering the rather large number of Gingerbread handsets that are still out there.

Once again, it appears Google is rolling out the update on a staged basis, meaning it is unlikely you will see the update on your devices for another few days (or longer, if issues with the new build become apparent).

  • Herman

I used to get my Hangout messages delayed.
Or when I used it on the PC, it didn't show up on my phone or tablet for a while.
Though I haven't heard anyone else complain about this.

I really hope this is solved in the update!

    • epsiblivion

it was like this in the first day or two for me but stopped happening pretty shortly after. been fine since then.

    • Rabid Rotty

Massive delays between a friend of mine and me when we hangout. sometimes she won't get my messages for onwards to 15 minutes and vice versa, not sure if it's her older device or if its a lag in the hangouts servers

      • Herman

Could it be Android to iPhone related?

        • Rabid Rotty

Nope i have a Nexus 7 and Nexus 4, she has a Samsung Pocket, all android, might just be because her device is old and under powered. guess we will find out next week when she picks up a Nexus 7

          • brkshr

How about your guys' carriers? That sounds more like a bad data connection or maybe even an app blocking data access for a certain period of time.

          • Rabid Rotty

we hangout over wifi, I know my connection is great but not sure about hers.

          • brkshr

            Hmmm

          • Rabid Rotty

i just got a text from her, and she has a pretty good connection and the same router as i do so it's either google doesn't like us and their servers hang just for us, or it could be her Samsung pocket just isn't up to par for that type of app, even though we had no issues on the old Talk

          • brkshr

Ya, that's just bazaar. Hopefully this update helps you out

          • Rabid Rotty

I'll let everyone know once we both get the update

          • Marcus

My brother has the same problem when I Hangout with him on his older Samsung phone.

          • Rabid Rotty

So it looks like hangouts doesn't play well with older devices. I wonder if it's because of lack of buffer space?

    • NoBullet

      This happened to me.

    • Vlad Staicu

I have a similar problem: chatting away on my PC while my phone is offline. When I turn on the WiFi on my phone, I get notifications of old chat messages that I already read and even responded too. They don't stick around, they just pop and then disappear, but it's quite irritating.

    • Zym0tiC

I had this problem. For me it got solved by switching WiFi to always on. Bit odd since it was also happening on 3g but it worked.

    • Kie

If my laptop is hibernating and I receive a message, it never appears in the Hangouts Chrome extension when I wake the computer

    • Matt Sokolinski

same here between me and my gf's LG 4XHD, not and isssue on my m8's GS3 tho... device specific??

  • http://revanmj.pl/ Michał Jakubowski

I'm beginning to hate those staged rollouts ...

    • RedManWalking

Haha. But, that's only an issue when you've awesome Android Police reporting that the update is out. Else you would never know :P

      • http://www.androidpolice.com/ David Ruddock

        We are awesome, thanks!

        • Grimmjow

          i concur!

      • RitishOemraw

new houserule, AP can only report staged rollout updates if they can also share mirrors to the updated APK :D

        just kiddn ofc

        • turdbogls

thats a good idea actually :)

        • Matthew Fry

          Here here!

    • Brian Stein

I'm not really sure I understand the point of them. But I feel like they should just add an option where someone could manually fetch it. I can't imagine that there are that many diehards that would undo the benefits of the staged rollouts.

    • naysayer

You beat me to it! Why don't they have an option for us nerds to receive updates right away?!

    • http://www.google.com/profiles/MetalMessiah78 José Gómez

I agree! These staged rollouts are b.s. +David Ruddock, can you all please start posting the APK's like you did with the Gmail post when there is an update to Google apps? Thanks!

      • Bleakvision

Ah, even the word "rollout" alone makes my blood boil, even with a Nexus 4 I still have to suffer this BS whenever an update is released. Google is supposedly better than Apple at "internet stuff", guess they are not in all areas.

    • GimmieNowGeneration

But it is better than Google's server crashing due to millions of requests all at once. Not like you need it this second.

      • http://revanmj.pl/ Michał Jakubowski

I never heard about any overload of Google Play servers. Besides, number of people who would use manual option is not that big (in comparison to number of all Android users).

        • skitchbeatz

The only thing that ever seems to be overloaded for Google are the servers for hardware releases on the Play store.

          • Bleakvision

            Oh snap!

      • thommcg

What, like all the crashs that never occurred before?

    • Matthew Fry

Staged rollouts should be a setting you can turn off.

✓ I want the latest and greatest and I understand it might lead to the app being broken for a few days.

  • http://www.anivision.org/ Christopher Bailey (Xcom923)

I never saw any issues with my devices so I'll just wait for the update rather than jumping on this.

  • http://profiles.google.com/cory.simpson Cory Simpson

I got a lot of double notifications when it launched, haven't seen one in awhile though. Biggest issue now is the microphone doesnt work in video chats on Galaxy S3 AOSP based ROMS.

  • Robbie Amburgey

I'm hoping for a black background choice, zoomable photos, and a little better stability when in a HUGE hangout.

    • Brian Stein

zoomable photos is something I definitely miss..

  • Mannar Mannan

I cant see who is online on hangouts app..or did i just not look properly?

    • ProductFRED

      Nope. No online statuses.

      • NoBullet

Lightly grayed out avatar means they're offline.

      • jon3laze

I want status text back. BRB, Out to Lunch, In Meeting, Available...Having text status is an easy way to communicate with your contacts what you are currently doing without being interupted.

        • spacekobra

You can also tell the app to not notify you for a set amount of time. Which I think is better than telling somebody to not message you and lose their train of thought.

          • jon3laze

I used it as a status to inform people of a specific time frame that I'd be unavailable. It's not very informative allowing only 2 states.

          • spacekobra

That's a fair point, I guess I do nothing that would require utmost urgency.

      • Unni

I actually like the fact that our status is not shown. Also, you can see from the app if the person has read your message.

    • NoBullet

People who are offline has their avatar lightly grayed out.

      • NO

Because that's not what people want. We want STATUS. As in active vs away vs offline. IM applications are amazingly simply and have been standardized for LONG TIME. It is inexcusable for an update to remove so many features that have worked perfectly for so long.

        • http://riteshtripathy.wordpress.com/ Ritesh

          Exactly.

        • NoBullet

He didnt say anything about active status. Just online status. Away statuses dont mean anything anymore. Theyll see the message when they get back so who cares.

          • wicketr

Unless they don't have the app installed or uninstalled. Messaged my friend on Hangouts, and he never got it because he had given up and uninstalled the app from his phone. Had i known he was "offline", i never would have messaged him with Hangouts and instead would have done it through SMS. Two days past before i called him up asking why he never responded. That shouldn't happen.

    • Matt Sokolinski

do you have status on TXT messaging ?? This is a dumbest thing people are saying in regards to this update

      • http://riteshtripathy.wordpress.com/ Ritesh

Except, this isn't just a text messaging app. Dumb is what you think Hangouts is.

  • http://twitter.com/sloy5101 Rafa Vázquez

My girlfriend had the double notification problem. It was very weird and annoying.

I hope those performance fixes are big, because my Galaxy Nexus such since I installed hangouts.

  • Miguel J. Aguilar

My girlfriend kept on insisting that it was really slow on her SGIII, so hopefully this makes it more enjoyable for us.

  • briankariu

I hate this staged roll outs because I always get the update last!!! :(

  • Julian

What about the ability to STAY signed out of certain accounts indefinitely?

    • esper256

Hangouts -> Main screen conversation list -> overflow menu -> settings -> select the Google account -> Sign out (it's the bottom most option).

      • julian

yes, i know. but every time you open the app, it signs you back into ALL the accounts. i know how to sign out of each account, but i have to do it 3 times every time i open the damn app. it's stupid. with the talk app, i was kept signed out unless i signed in on purpose.

  • http://whosthisguy.com Brendan

I'm hoping that clicking on a user's avatar in a chat window will open their contact card, not their Google+ profile.

  • BroadcastJunkie

Is there a way to cut in line? like you know cutting in line when you get a system update by clearing out data of "google service framework" is there an option to do the same? anyone anyone?

  • lusky3

Much loving Hangouts over the old Talk.

  • http://the-jade-domain.com Jaime J. Denizard

Got excited when I saw Hangouts finally got updated, but then went back to being disappointed when I saw it didn't fix the one thing I deem a problem: online presence. I will keep holding off to update from Talk until they make your contacts' online presence (online, away, busy, offline) as easy to spot as it is on Talk. Let's hope it happens because I really want to like Hangouts.

    • DeAno Jackson

You're in for a long wait; they have no intention to do that. Online/Offline doesn't even matter anymore; exactly why do you view it as significant? Do you also check to make sure someone has their cell phone in their hand prior to sending a text?

      • NoBullet

Grayed out avatar means they're offline.

      • http://riteshtripathy.wordpress.com/ Ritesh

It is significant for initiating a real-time chat. If it replaces Talk, it should, at the very least, be capable of what Talk could do.

        • DeAno Jackson

And in what way does a small green circle next to someone's name force someone to respond to you the second you send them a message? Does their phone explode if they do not comply, or can they ignore the message until they get around to answering it without an issue?

          • http://riteshtripathy.wordpress.com/ Ritesh

You just don't get it, do you? Nothing forces nobody. Its just an indicator that lets you know someone's available for a quick banter. There's no reason that justifies removing that simple indicator.
And calm the F down, nothing's gonna explode! lol

    • NoBullet

Online presence was always there. If the avatar is grayed out it means they're offline.

  • Justin

The double notifications bug usually only happened on brand new replacement installations, where the old google services was still sending out talk notifications instead of hangouts. Rebooting usually fixed it.

  • Eik Woldach
    • makapav

      Thanks buddy!

    • usaff22

      Thanks mate :)

    • pratyush97

      Thanks!

    • http://www.google.com/profiles/MetalMessiah78 José Gómez

      Thank you so much!

    • Vlad Staicu

      Much obliged.

    • ruffneckc

      Thanks

    • Lugnuts McGruff

      You Rock!

    • Andrew

Thanks. I can confirm this updated me to 1.0.2!

  • maestro PL

I was told there's going to be APK :)

  • Fidlefadle

App is still pointless without SMS support. Also why is Google+ messenger still a separate thing?

For this to really take off it needs unified messaging across SMS, google services, and facebook..

    • http://the-jade-domain.com Jaime J. Denizard

It's not pointless, it still unifies Talk, Google+ Messenger and Google+ Hangouts. IIRC, the Google+ Messenger icon is going away soon.

  • armshouse

Double notification was (still is since I haven't gotthe update) very annoying! Sometimes it doesn't show the hangouts notification at all aand just shows the Google talk one instead (even though when you clicked on it it wwould take you to hangouts). So I for one am glad theyve addressed it!

    • http://the-jade-domain.com Jaime J. Denizard

I didn't understand how this was possible. I thought Hangouts replaced Talk? As in it literally replaced the apk.

      • http://riteshtripathy.wordpress.com/ Ritesh

Thinking the same thing myself. Did a lot of people install the Talk apk after installing Hangouts?

        • armshouse

Nope, i just installed hangouts straight from the app store and was getting double notifications immediately. Clearly it's a bug otherwise Google wouldn't be fixing it :P I haven't looked through my phone though to see if the old APK still exists... maybe there's remnants of Talk in the Hangouts APK?

          • http://riteshtripathy.wordpress.com/ Ritesh

            That's really strange.

  • Postmodernist Cuisine

It still doesn't let you use the /ponystream feature in the app :(

  • Roberto Giunta

Because a lot of you are asking for some kind of online status: There are THREE different indicators in the app, which are all more or less a PITA:

    1. Not available for chat: Icon is greyed out.

    2. Available for chat but NOT in the app/directly able to answer: Icon is colored.

    3. Available for chat and in the app/directly able to answer (the equivalent of the green line on the desktop): When you are IN the chat with the other person, the little icon (read indicator) of the other person is either pale or colored. If it's colored, the other person is in the chat and available.

I can somehow live with that - although I would prefer the green line (how difficult can that be?) - but I would love bette sorting options and a status message...

    • Jeff Hills

I don't get the same experience that you described. All lcons look the same regardless of status. Also, as of yesterday the green line has gone from both gmail and google+ version of hangouts.

  • pravs

    Half baked google app

    • LPS

True still many features missing..signing out is a big headache..no options to join contacts

  • pratyush97

    Y U NO UPLOAD APK!

  • imtoomuch

Where is the link to the APK? You usual have this for us so I'm sure it won't be long.

I never seem to get the Google rollout updates on any of their apps. I always have to get the APK online to install the updates.

  • AreYouSerious

In other news: definition of significant entirely lost on AndroidPolice editors and writers, more at 11.

  • Frank

Upload pictures(screenshots) via android and it resizes them. I'm not sure if it's a bug or an intended feature of hangouts. If I upload the same picture via iPhone or desktop, the picture won't be resized.

    • naysayer

I guess it is intended to keep the traffic low and therefore increase the speed.

  • http://riteshtripathy.wordpress.com/ Ritesh

Inexplicable handling of online statuses, terrible sorting of contacts, resource-hungry etc etc. I've come to expect a lot better from Google. Hangouts is a step up in UI but 5 steps back in functionality from Talk on Android.

    • TrueDat

I think you need to come to terms with the fact that Talk and Hangouts are NOT the same product and they will never be.

      • Bleakvision

I think you need to come to terms with the fact that you are an apologist.

      • http://riteshtripathy.wordpress.com/ Ritesh

And why exactly is that? Do you have a valid reason/explanation or just those meaningless statements?

      • http://the-jade-domain.com Jaime J. Denizard

You're joking right? It says it is the name: "replaces Talk"

  • maxax

Google please change the icon with red blue-yellow-green-coloring!

  • Andrey Savin

Hopefully I will actually get message notifications and timely message syncing with this update on my Nexus 7.

  • Bleakvision

Actually I have no idea what I am doing when using the hangouts app. Who is online, who even got gTalk- if yes what account, why is it showing random/duplicate contacts?...

It is the most broken App Google has ever released (well, after Listen, but that's dead now)

    • http://the-jade-domain.com Jaime J. Denizard

I want to upvote your comment but I actually liked Listen :P

  • mrjayviper

And I suppose only the US gets first crack with the new update!!!

don't think even apple do this?

    • perfectlyreasonabletoo

      qq

  • blanquito

I was one of the people affected by the double message from hangouts and talk. It was quite annoying, glad to see it gone

  • JordanMcRae

I hate this new staged rollout of updates. I want it now!

  • Himanshu Bhatia

the update adds permission to read and send SMS....

  • Babs Oyed

Very good hut where's the SMS integration, Google voice integration, sending of all file types - videos, PDF, etc. That's what I'd be excited about

  • Kris

Am I the only one that has this bug on hangouts? The last message I type is totally obscured by the word suggestions bar of whatever keyboard I'm using. I tested this even with the stock keyboard for good measure and I use Swype 99% of the time. Annoying as hell
