Nothing can break a good app quicker than an ugly interface. Conversely, a subpar app can be thrown into the limelight thanks to a beautiful UI. The point is: we're all slightly vain and love to look at pretty things. If you're a developer, making your app visually appealing is absolutely clutch for success; if you're just not sure where to start, however, we've got a book that should be just what the doctor ordered: Android User Interface: Turning Ideas and Sketches into Beautifully Designed Apps ($25, Amazon).

And now's your chance to get one of ten copies for free.

This contest is now over.

The final results are listed below. If you've won, you will be contacted in the near future. Congratulations!

Everyone else - keep participating and stay tuned to Android Police so that you don't miss our upcoming giveaway announcements. You can follow AP on Twitter, Facebook, Google+, and RSS.

As if the name alone isn't enough, here's a bit about what this book is, well, about:

In today’s crowded Android marketplace, it’s more important than ever to differentiate your apps. Great design is the best way to do that. Now, leading Android app design expert Ian G. Clifton shows you how to make your apps come alive and how to deliver apps that users will want, love, and buy!
Reflecting the Android 4.2 SDK, this book serves both as a tutorial for the entire design and implementation process and as a handy reference you’ll rely on for every Android development project.
Clifton shows how to create effective designs, organize them into Android components, and move gracefully from idea, to wireframe, to comp, to finished app. You’ll learn how to bring your own voice, personality, and style to your app designs; how to leverage advanced drawing techniques such as PorterDuff compositing; how to test designs on diverse Android devices; and much more.
Android User Interface Design details each step of the design and development process and contains extensive downloadable sample code, including complete finished apps.

  • Learn how Android has evolved to support outstanding app design
  • Integrate app design with development, from idea through deployment
  • Understand views, the building blocks of Android user interfaces
  • Make the most of wireframes and prototypes
  • Build efficient layouts and integrate smooth animations
  • Make apps more useful by automatically updating ListViews
  • Combine views into custom components
  • Use image compositing and other advanced techniques
  • Work with the canvas and advanced drawing
  • Leverage Google Play and Amazon Appstore assets

One step at a time, this guide helps you bridge the gap between Android developers and designers so you can work with colleagues to create world-class app designs...or do it yourself!

Entering the giveaway is simple: just leave a blog post comment (but make sure to complete the entry in the Rafflecopter widget, otherwise your vote won't count!). Users in the US, Canada, or the UK are eligible to win either a print copy or eBook; all other areas are eBook only. Ready? Go!

      +1 & Does nobody vote here ?

Rafflecopter didn't let me enter any text.

My app's UI is reported to "kinda suck", though much better than 2 years ago.

My poor users have suffered this in part due to virtually no alternative apps in this area. Also because the more technical low level part is reverse engineered and thus very hard, and this, and tech support have taken all my time.

It doesn't help that I have almost no experience with the niceties of UI.

I hope to improve the UI this year.

I'd make an rssreader that instead of showing snippets, tries to show more information, like the entire article, making it a competitive newsreader.
I would also make a graphical app that allows you to easily develop on your tablet, but compiling and building it on a remote server. So that when you have an important job, and you go on vacation, you just need your tablet to perform a quick fix or somethin like that.

  • Chris

I've started my own app company a couple years ago (mostly as a way to try and build up a portfolio of work, and perhaps pay off my student loans if successful enough), and later this week a friend of mine will be joining me in this endeavour so this book would come in really handy as we'll be ramping up production over the coming months.

  • m1st0

I will be able to combine best practices with beauty. I like what I create to look incredible while still meeting best practices.

  • Mark Llego

I’m lucky enough to have a software background and some time to learn. I target the niches I already address with my blogs. This makes the whole marketing process easy: I already have readers, newsletter subscribers, twitter followers.

Regarding the funding, I use a classical strategy. A full version, and a lite version with reduced functionality. Not sure about ads in apps, though.

The reason for starting in this business is simple: diversification. It’s one more source of income.

  • Ojas mehta

i will try my best to make use of the book by making an app.

  • http://twitter.com/jusuchin85 Justin Alex

I'm planning to start beta testing of my first app any day now, but it has minimal UI. Hopefully my next app will be more substantial. I am a programmer but recognize the importance of UI design. I've been watching Android Design in Action and have read a couple of general UI design books, but an Android UI design book would be great to read.
