TuneIn Radio is one of the most popular streaming music services on any mobile platform, but it has just gotten a new feature for Android users. From now on when you hear a track you like, tap the Google Play button at the top of the 'now playing' screen to head right to Google Play and buy it. See the before and after images below.

For those not aware, TuneIn Radio streams over 70,000 radio stations live, and it's not just music. There's general talk and sports radio, as well. The podcast directory also contains a huge number of feeds to peruse. The Google Play link will conveniently bring you to the search page for the song, not just the music store section of Play. Songs you've added to favorites can also be bought through Google Play later.

The free TuneIn Radio app does all the basic stuff, but there are ads that slide up from the bottom. TuneIn Radio Pro ($5) loses the ads and includes the ability to record radio streams, though many of them are of mediocre quality.

Does Tune In have comedy stations? Like stand up comedians and such?

    • http://www.lazyrivr.com/ Andy Bell

TuneIn mostly streams simulcasts of actual AM/FM radio stations (though there are a few internet only station in there too). There are also a few shows (essentially podcasts) in there too. It appears there are a few comedy stations out there though!

that is WAYYY off, Tunein pulls in the entire shoutcast library, it is not "mostly" am/fm simulcasts if anything that is the smallest part of TuneIn as the shoutcast library alone is well over 70,000 stations and thousands in the library of podcasts

Not sure if it will let you, but at some times of the day try BBC Radio 4 Extra, BBC Radio 4 and BBC Radio 7

oh only a hundred or so. TuneIn pulls in shoutcast streams so anything you can find there you can find in TuneIn, and since TuneIn added the ability to add custom ULRs... there isnt much you cant find or add yourself

    yeah, I listen to

It took them long enough. It used to have a button to find the songs on Amazon MP3 before, which annoyed me since I've started buying music from Google Play. I'm glad they've replaced it with the Play Store button.

    • Matthew Fry

Amazon MP3 is cheaper almost 100% of the time.

not for the music I buy

i really liked this app. had to uninstall it when I saw it was running in my background when I exited. I hate that.

    • Chris

lots of apps run in the background.

      • John

exactly. doesn't mean it's necessarily a bad thing. tunein seems to be a pretty well coded app too.

        • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Pretty sure you're wrong. App processes do end up resident in memory for some time even if you finish() the last Activity. This is probably what you saw. It's perfectly normal.

          • John

wait what? how am i wrong?

i agree with what you're saying. i just worded it in a weird way. i was just agreeing with Chris saying processes do end up in memory even after you close them & it's not a bad thing(aka: normal)

I meant to reply to the OP. You are indeed right, John.

It is also possible to leave a service in the background which is actually doing something (ie: polling for changes) and draining battery for no apparent benefit. A lot of times it's done purely by accident, not even that the apps needs it to still be running.

Is google play music ever going to be available in Turkey/Europe?

  • Qliphah

Or... if you have the Pro version you could use the built in feature to skip back a few seconds, wait for song to start, tap record, enjoy any time. Just wish it would name and tag on it's own but then again I'm just surprised the record ability has been left in as long as it has.

  • Andrew

I wonder, will the Amazon App Store version of TuneIn Pro have this feature? I don't see an update yet, so I can't check.

  • Sorian

TuneIn was great, till Clear Channel made their own app (iHeart Radio) and pulled all their stations from TuneIn.

    • http://www.bupahs.com/ Keith

true, but there are ways around that by adding your own URLs. just have to search Google for the address' for the stations you want. I really didnt care as I never listen to broadcast radio anymore anyway
