Listen up, Android users. If you're using Google Now, don't go to its Settings -> My Stuff and try to modify sports teams or stocks right now, as doing so completely borks the whole app. As soon as you go back to the main screen or click into Search, you will experience a force close. Repeated attempts to restart it will result in a crash as well:

The only thing that works is clearing out Google Search's data in Settings -> Applications, after which you need to re-enroll into Google Now. Changing your Home or Work locations does not seem to trigger the issue - it's just sports teams and stocks.

All of my devices are affected as well as devices of all AP team members I've asked. There are reports of the same on the web, and even TechCrunch picked it up, though, without too many details.

For the curious, here they are:

wm_Screenshot_2013-05-12-17-18-14 wm_Screenshot_2013-05-12-17-18-30 wm_Screenshot_2013-05-12-17-18-42

The crash seems to be occurring in StockDataInfoProvider, which I presume is responsible for handling stocks. Since it seems to have started recently, I think Google changed something on the backend, which caused unexpected data to come back from Search servers and crash some part of the app that doesn't catch exceptions.

Hopefully, Google will pick up on this and release an update or fix the backend soon, preferably before I/O.

    Anyone able to reproduce this?

    • ABurningFalcon

I was not able to reproduce when I removed and added stocks, sorry Artem.

    • TY

I can't reproduce this. Added teams/stocks, and removed them no problem (I do not normally use Google Now, FYI)

There may be a secondary dependency or a pre-existing condition, but it was happening to too many of us to ignore.

I'm not an expert (and I actually don't know what I'm talking about, here) but since the problem comes from syncing, could this be related to the new leaked version of Play Services? Have all AP members installed it?

          • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

            I don't have it installed.

          • PhilNelwyn

            lol

    • Bojan Gutic

It happened to me a few days ago. I'm gonna try again now.

Edit: Removed one team, added another and it crashed. Also with StockDataInfoProvider.

    • chandradithya

Is it because of the new Google Play Services apk you guys installed?

      • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

No, I don't have it installed.

This happened to me. If you uninstall the updates you can make the changes you want and then you can update it again and it's fine.

    It's called "error handling", Google.

  • Ygor Vaz

No, it's not an error. It's because you don't know which teams you truly like and this is google's way to show you the thuth about yourself, so just accept the teams that it chose to you. -wtfdidIjustwrite-

The problem lies ONLY with the "Google Search" app version 2.4.10.626027, of April 3,2013. If you have an earlier version or are able to downgrade Google Search by uninstalling updates from Google Play, then it will work fine.

(Some other phones such as the SGS4 do come factory installed with 2.4.10.626027 as such they are not able to downgrade as this is the Google Search in their firmware)

If the app gets updated to the above version, then it starts crashing as soon as any edits are made to (at least) some of the cards in Google Now, in my case crashes have happened with sports card and maps/navigation card.

I am experiencing this on both,my Nexus 7 and Nexus 4, both with stock Jelly Bean 4.2.2 I am rooted but running stock firmware.

Can you please confirm this version related behavior?

    • PhilNelwyn

I have version 2.4.10.626027 installed, my Nexus 4 running stock 4.2.2 isn't rooted.
      No crash.

      • Felipe Barousse

Have you edited any of the Google Now cards? Like adding a favorite sports team? or changing the name of your "Work" location... all this done starting from Google Now and then hitting settings, etc. etc. ?
If you can do it, we'll appreciate it.... Thanks in advance.

        • PhilNelwyn

          Yes, I have.

  • Rebecca

google keep extension also resulting in error

  • Tarel Washington

The problem I have is that it takes forever to respond now. Older versions, I would ask "what time is it?" And instantly get a result. With this version it takes up to 20 secs to respond to the same question regardless of my connection. After the first 20 secs, it speeds up but its now a 3-5 sec delay.

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Same problem here. It takes at least 3-5 seconds to even pull up search results on the fastest connection available with almost no latency.

Something is definitely up with either the app or the servers.

    • Khastro

Indeed, I just give up and launch firefox, type my query and get results faster.

  • Clifford Rebelo

Artem, do you happen to be a Maple Leafs fan and switched your team to the Bruins after last night?
Sorry, I'm still pumped about that.

  • Izzy

mine started crashing a lot recently and i did nothing to sports or stocks

  • Alvin Brinson

Saw this and didn't think it affected me because I don't use stocks or sports info. But it auto added a stock, and when I removed it to stop the stock spam, and now it crashes constantly.

Google Now repeatdly crashing when changing transportation mode in a directions card

I have the same issue whenever I change a directions card to a previously googled destination. For instance, now I'm getting walking directions to every place I've searched for. If I click the little information top right button and change transportation mode to driving, the app will start crashing indefinitely until I clear all app data. I can reproduce that if I clear app data and change transportation mode once again.

As of today, May 15th 2013, the day Google i/o 2013 launched, Google has updated the Google Seach app, the culprit of the Google Now failures described in this post.

Have you upgraded Google Search already ?

If so, have you determined if the problems we had, have been solved already ?

Have you found any other bugs, issues, crashes ?

  • tenaxitsolutions
