There are still very few "universal" docks available for Android users, but if you own a Samsung smartphone, this little baby comes pretty close. The Samsung Galaxy Multimedia Desktop Charging Dock includes a spiffy flip-out stand big enough to support the biggest of Notes, plus an audio-out 3.5mm jack for easy output to a nearby speaker. One Amazon vendor is selling the dock for just sixteen dollars American, a discount of more than two thirds off the retail price.

This is an official Samsung first-party dock, not some cheapo cash-in. It seems to be a slight variation of this dock, which retails for $49.99. The official Samsung page lists the former as compatible with pretty much every major Samsung smartphone released in the last two years, including all variants the Galaxies S II, S S III, S4, Note, Note II, and the Galaxy Nexus. The sole Amazon reviewer says it's compatible with the Galaxy S4 and activates its integrated dock app, so we're assuming it's the same hardware in a slightly less glossy case.

Functionally, the dock will charge your phone and output audio - that's it. An HDMI slot for compatible devices would have been nice, but you can't have everything. What you can have is free shipping, at least if you live in the United States. While the Desktop Dock doesn't qualify for Amazon Prime, free standard shipping is available for one and all through the vendor, On The House.

You'd have to take the case off.

thanks. i'll stick with the oem charger & cable then. my case has a kickstand too, so kind of negates the benefit of this dock.

While that is true that such a glowing, single review was posted so soon, the seller has 4.8 stars, so I hope they're accurately presenting their items. If they're selling a non-OEM product marketed as made by Samsung, they should get a lot of shit for it.

They'll receive shit from me if they are. I bought 2.

Copyright infringement is a harsh accusation. Where do you get the idea that this isn't authentic Samsung?

      • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

There's no accusation, just suspicions. I think it's the real deal personally.

        • Adam

          Say that then.

I think I was pretty clear and didn't accuse anyone.

    Better than $50 wrong though.

    • Matthew Fry

      Unless you buy 3

      • Owen Finn

        Only $48 wrong.

I just placed my order and took the 3-5 day free shipping. I will update the Amazon review once I have tried it out.

I don't see how this will output audio on the galaxy nexus. I think it's the only compatible phone listed that doesn't support audio out via USB.

  • Mike

Just purchased one, worth the $16 to give it a shot.

This was my concern too, I'd rather not have to take off the case every time so I started looking at the other docks... found the $50 one mentioned in the article shipping from Amazon for $26 and there are some customer pics with decent sized case still on.

I purchased Samsung's battery pack/charger w/extra battery which I love way better than this. My phone can sit either direction and the spare battery is charging at the same time.

Mine arrived today (ships from Brooklyn, NY), I have a Ringke Slim case on my GNex and looks like i'll have to take it off to charge. I'll confirm later since it was delivered 5min before I had to headout for work.

    • turketron

I've got the same case for my GNex, I'd love to know if it works in the case.

Why would anyone want this product when you can by a Smart Dock Multimedia Hub with three USB ports and HDMI out? I have one of these for my Note 2 and it works great. http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones-accessories/EDD-S20JWEGSTA

edit: I do understand that $16 is a bit cheaper than what the Smart Docs costs ;)

    • primalxconvoy

Because 99 dollars is an absolute rip off for something that other phones (which have seperate hdmi out and charging/usb host ports) can do with just a few cheap cables.

Why would anyone want this port, either? My phone case on my note 2 can be used as a stand and then all I have to do is charge my phone with the free cable supplied with the phone and connect speakers to the phone via the free headphone port.

Has Samsung been employing ex-Sony exs or something? Their almost-proprietary hdmi out solutions and other hardware seems to smack of Sony's old tricks...

    Its up to $19.99 now.
