The original House of the Dead (and its sequels) is one of my absolute favorite arcade shooters of all time. And House of the Dead: Overkill brought a whole new experience to the franchise, with more dynamic characters and full-on adult content (we're talkin' drug use, strippers, and more f-bombs than Pulp Fiction can shake a stick at). Needless to say, it's a fantastic rail shooter.

For those who have longed for more HotD action, Sega just pushed Overkill: The Lost Reels to the Play Store. The game – which was promised back at GDC – brings all the original characters to the mix, including foul-mouthed playboy cop Isaac Washington, his unlikely (and reluctant) partner Agent G, fully-armed stripper Varla Guns, and the oft-forgotten busty blonde Candi Stryper.

Together the group is on a mission to do what it does best: slay some undead mutant thingies. There are three worlds in Story Mode: Papa's Palace of Pain, Ballistic Trauma, and Naked Terror for you to satisfy your bloodlust on – if you'd rather just slay hordes of the undead, though, there's also a survival mode that'll pit you up again nonstop droves of 'em.

The game will set you back $5  in the Play Store, so hit the widget and get to work.

Hey Cam, any IAPs in this game? I'd hate it if, after paying $5 for a game, I'm still required to shell out cash to be even remotely competitive.

    • Kevin Aaronson

Yes. Only 2 levels available, naked terror costs two bucks to unlock. As well as iaps for weapon upgrades. As to whether on not you can compete without I don't know, I refunded as soon as I found out there were iap. Hope this helps.

You just saved me 5 bucks. Good on you, mate. Here's a gif of a turtle trying to eat a tomato.

Jesus christ. I just garnered so much respect for SEGA bringing House of the Dead to mobile...and lost that respect even quicker. TWO LEVELS FOR FIVE DOLLARS? Screw you, SEGA. Screw you...

Wait, do you mean two levels, or worlds? "There are three worlds in Story Mode: Papa's Palace of Pain, Ballistic Trauma, and Naked Terror..." So am I correct to assume that each world has multiple levels?

        • Kevin Aaronson

Two single player worlds. There were multiple stages per level (or campaign or world) though, correct.

Played the Wii version of this and really loved it, but extra IAP on top of the game price?! No thanks

Identical situation, shame I wouldn't have minded playing again but a lot of this IAP nonsense needs to die. DLC should be an extra, not an essential.

You had me at zombie strippers; You lost me at IAP w/ a $5 upfront purchase...

For every zombie game released, a gamer and his kitten die.

      And become zombified?

  • TheFirstUniverseKing

I made the mistake of buying this and letting the refund period expire before playing it and seeing IAP galore. :(

    • jonathan3579

You can still get refunded after the window.

  • paco

Wow, $5 and not even the complete game, and they don't say anything in the description.

    fuck you sega

How do you aim? twin joystick style or tap on the enemy's you want dead or something else again?

Default is move the gunsight with one finger, tap the "fire" icon with another finger to shoot/reload, from what I could see. Apparently you can unlock a tap-to-shoot control system, going by TouchArcade's review.

I just read through this article thinking it's just any other game. But then I watched the trailer and then it flashed to my head that this is THE House Of The Dead, the prequel to which I had played over and over trying to kill that Magician Boss during my childhood!

    Got to try this out.

I wouldn't really be that bothered about the pricing structure if the whole thing weren't so drastically cut down from the original. Played Overkill with a friend on the Wii and it was one of the best drunken "WTF is going on?" videogame experiences I've ever had - I was in hysterics at how much the ending freaked my friend out - but this just feels wrong, wrong, wrong.

Awkward comic-book style silent cutscenes, no voiceovers, no proper soundtrack, toned-down detail levels when I don't see anything to indicate my device couldn't manage a direct port of the original... I'm not keeping this, not because I'm bothered about the price - I'd pay $10 or $15 for a real port, easily, and if it was a good port I wouldn't care if Sega split it into $10 upfront and $5 to unlock the rest. It's because of what I'm paying for. It simply doesn't make a good enough impression in the first five minutes, so... refunded.

On the other hand, those cut-down detail levels mean it seems to run fine on a Nexus 10, if anyone else is desperate to buy it. Controls all right - I was using the regular controls, move the gun sight with one finger, tap with the other to shoot. But yeah, this isn't for me. A big disappointment.

    Again. No demo, no purchase.

YOU HAD ME A SEGA HOUSE OF DEAD...I've never picked up a game so fast without any hesitation

The latest update broke this game. It won't even load to the start screen now. As a matter of fact they have taken it off the play store. Seems like you can't even find it on their if you didn't already buy it. Hopefully they are fixing it and just disabled the download page until it has a working update. Really sucks because I ended up uninstalling and reinstalling the game and not only did I lose my save (which I knew would happen) but now I can't even access the third level that I had to pay even more money to unlock. This has been the most frustrating app/game I've bought on the Play Store.

Five bucks and it's not even complete? Fuck Sega.
