ES File Explorer received its first major update in a while this morning, bringing the popular management app to version 3.0. The major change? A brand-new UI that isn't really Holo per se, but does incorporate a slide-out navigation bar and swipeable tabs.

Here's the complete changelog:

V3.0

  • New UI
  • Fast Access(Press menu)
  • Multiple Windows
  • Send Files By WiFi
  • Gestures(Drag,Zoom,Slide)
  • Classic Theme
  • New Picture,Root Explorer,Tools,...

While there certainly isn't any lack of competition when it comes to file management utilities on Android, ES File Explorer has remained one of the most popular such apps for quite some time now, and a UI refresh was probably high on users' lists at this point. The new look is definitely better than the old version of the app, though the swipeable tabs seem pretty clumsily implemented right now, as they often bounce back or cause visible 'glitches' in the UI. For those who don't like the new look, a 'classic' theme can wind back the proverbial clock.

Head to the Play Store to grab the update now.

    "Don't use bottom tab bars

Other platforms use the bottom tab bar to switch between the app's views. Per platform convention, Android's tabs for view control are shown in action bars at the top of the screen instead. In addition, Android apps may use a bottom bar to display actions on a split action bar.

You should follow this guideline to create a consistent experience with other apps on the Android platform and to avoid confusion between actions and view switching on Android.

For more information on how to properly use action bars for view control, see Action Bars."

What, I don't want to get my finger to a 4.3+ inches screen top to perform simple actions! Go to hell with Android guidelines!

Damn.. finally they changed their "Symbian looking" disgusting UI, now it worths downloading!

It's way better than the older version, but it still has "something that doesn't let me use it as my daily file manager". For now I just use Astro, the latest version is really nice.
But the best I've tried is Solid Explorer, I keep on planning to buy it, but I don't need a file manager often enough, so I keep saying "maybe I'll just buy it the next time I'll need a fm".

What? Astro doesn't let you to create new files for example a new txt, and ES lets you access LAN and Cloud services out of the box!

      • Spittie

You're right on the first, but I rarely (if ever) need to create a new file, just move them around. On the second, Astro does support Dropbox/Box/Skydrive.

Yes but only if you download the plug-ins right?

          • Spittie

I don't think I've ever downloaded a plugin for Astro, but maybe I just forgot that I did.
Could check, but I prefer being lazy.

The new GUI stinks. I have no options to connect to additional LANs. Luckily before the update I set up a connection with my Desktop, but I want to be able to link my Laptop too. There is no bottom/sidebar to Search for Network. I have to say I love it when updates are actually downgrades (very sarcastic voice).
