We've been seeing leaks about a new Google Play Store UI, that we all thought was going to be released at I/O this year. Nope! The rollout starts today, chaps! According to a post over on the official Android blog, the fancy card-based UI is coming to Android phones and tablets running Froyo (v2.2) and up. Worldwide, the new version will be available "over the next few weeks.

Oh, and you should be happy to know that the ugly pattern across the Action Bar is, in fact, not part of the final release. Additionally, the blog post touts a continuous scrolling interface that will show you more recommendations as you move down the page. We imagine this will be similar to how Google+ functions now.

As soon as we get our hands on the APK, you can bet Ron will be doing his trademark teardown. What do you think, though? Do you like the new look?

PLEASE tell me we can finally filter for purchased apps!!! PLEASE!!

    • JonJJon

I wanted this but I'm wondering if it will ever happen on either the website or app, can still hope for the best though.

  • http://twitter.com/bhavishya Bhavishya Kanjhan

Is there a way to force upgrade?

    • mechapathy

If I remember correctly, you can try clearing the app data for the Play Store, launching it, then backing out and launching it again. It seems convoluted, but for some reason I remember this working. EDIT: Nope. Sorry.

    • Lalit Mali

Uninstall all updates to Play Store(hell, get an apk from the market days and install it) and it will upgrade to the latest Play Store version available.(4.0 may not be available for your phone/region as yet)

      • Dinous

        Didn't work...
        I'M GETTING MAD :D

  • RitishOemraw

Someone should upload the APK soon or else I will...well else I'll likely have to wait a while :|

Also, I think Ron would love to do a full-blown working APK teardown asap

    • ddpacino

There's no 'would love to." Expect it by 4pm mate, lol.

      • RitishOemraw

hope he finds new things not found in the leaked earlier build.
Something that makes this years i/o even more exciting

        • ddpacino

I want to see some serious focus on Android@Home, putting that Moto hardware division to good use (and/or whatever/whomever they used to make the Nexus Q).

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000003999549 Mike Harris

I can't believe people downvoted you, as if you weren't being sarcastic.

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/author/ron-amadeo/ Ron Amadeo

Well, I did a teardown on the leaked one, and other than the cosmetic changes, there was basically no difference. I'm very interested to see what the difference is between this and the leaked version, but I'm not holding my breath for anything super exciting.

      • navjot

Google should really slip in an easter egg just for you. Just a simple "Hey Ron!" or something.

        • EH101

He deserves something better than that... Like an image of some sort actually used in the system and named after him like ron_amadeo.png

          That would be awesome.

          • RitishOemraw

maybe for the report bug/feedback button.

          • EH101

That would be perfect, then they could call it ron_amadeo-bug_squasher.png

            Sounds all official-like. Lol

Can you get the APK for us?

  • http://twitter.com/omac_ranger Logan Graham

Well damn. That was quick. Bring it on. I'd welcome Babel and the others this week as well.

Edit: Oh snap! Looks like they removed the pixel design off the top! Awesome!

  • Vipin

Looks amazing. It's something to appriciate how Google has turned into a design power house since Matias Duarte has come in.

    • ddpacino

All hetero, but I love that guy. I've loved his work since webOS days. I was skeptical about how he could change Android, and have been nothing but PLEASED! He said right before the Nexus 4 was released that Android was only about 33% complete of his entire vision. Anxious for the new update at I/O.

To the one person who downvoted this. "I will find you, and make you switch your vote"

2 now... just to irk you

In a interview with the verge, he said that key lime pie would feature an evolution of the Holo theme. This gives sneak peak. Google Now is also another example of that evolution. In 4.0, I felt that there was too much visual clutter with all the blue lights over the OS. With 4.1, Android has toned down the blue and now has a mix of Blue and Grey. I can't wait for Key Lime Pie. I have a Nexus 7 and we Nexus owners would get the updates months before other manufacturers. go, Nexus.

  • ddpacino

Love it!!!! Hopefully Android 5.0 is a welcomed and beautiful change as well!

    • Jays2Kings

Be careful of what you call the next Android version number or Ron will have another fit :P

      • Joshua

Let's agree on Android v. > 4.2.2. Unless Google completely changes how numbering is done, I doubt there's any way that could be wrong.

        • http://twitter.com/HandNF NF

What's wrong with saying Key Lime Pie?

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000738940938 Moosa Mahsoom

He made a point.... We do not know whether Key Lime Pie is 5.0 or 4.3 or something like that. Looking back it could be 4.3 or maybe 5.0. Based on 2.x.x history (2.0, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 then 3.0). But, it could be 5.0 becayse there's a huge change in the design department.

Looks good. Lets hope they bring in more functionality, like filtering your paid apps from everything else.

  • hajo

  • http://www.facebook.com/mark.steenbakkers.9 Mark Steenbakkers

Shame we can only access the Apps & Games section in the Netherlands. All the other stuff is still not available here :')

    • Grimmjow

They just rolled out Books, Movies and Devices in India. Boy am i happy

  • Alchemy08

Lol, at google saying the new update will take weeks to update to be pushed. Where that apk ?

  • Danny Kriegbaum Laursen

Yet again Google manage to pull a nicer design on 1 of their app (last time was Google+)

  • Kiron Kemelfield

I need the apk or I will die

    • Chris

      Then die

      • Simon Belmont

        I lol'd. Seriously.

Mean, I know. But I just read it in Batman's voice.

  • Bradley Ruiz

    APK!!! :) please..

  • Ivan Myring

So does this update automatically or do i have to wait, and flash it to my nexus 4 and 7 on cyanogenmod and paranoid android

    • EH101

It should happen automatically sometime in the near future.

  • heat361

Can't wait till i get it. Its a great design! Can't wait for the apk tear down also ;)

  • Ivan Myring

Yay they got rid of the nasty pixelated action bar

  • Expostulation

I liked the pattern in the action bar. Surprised no one brought it up about the current Google Play having a pattern.

  • jani jokela

    we want apk

  • http://twitter.com/wstrmn Marc

Nice! Now only maps is lacking a Holo UI. Fix that google!

  • http://www.androider.de/ Johannes “Jojo” Siemers

"Oh, and you should be happy to know that the ugly pattern across the Action Bar is, in fact, not part of the final release."
Which was probably only there, to find out from where the leaks are coming.

  • Péter Szentkirályi

  • JonJJon

I do like the new look, clean and looks easily navigable.

  • okay

why so many people got a nerd hard-on begging for the apk?
It's not like there's amazing new shit... just some changes... chill!

    • Zach B.

People like to live on the cutting edge, they want the latest updates right away and I don't blame them.

  • http://www.facebook.com/acroyogi Greg Roberts

Google is clearly moving ALL their apps to the clean, card based UI first prototyped in their 'Now' product. You can see they're doing the exact same thing with Google Glass / Google Glasses: http://dsky9.com/glassfaq/the-google-glass-psd-template/

  • http://twitter.com/androidfilehost xRepinsSporx

Sweet cant wait for the apk and of course the traffic to AFH :)

  • Simon Belmont

Interesting. Glad they removed that awful pattern on the top tabs.

I, like Ron, figured this would be saved for Google I/O next month. Considering it probably tips off the future design language of Android.

Just did some hunting...but haven't tested it yet. (Found at Droid-Life)

It seems kind of strange that the "Home" tab is gone in the phone version, and there is no more "Featured" tab that features highlighted apps (which is in many occasions quite useful as it promotes high quality apps)

  • http://www.facebook.com/joseph.millhouse.3 Joseph Millhouse

    It's beautiful

  • mikeym0p

I love the look, but it's a little slower than the previous market. Hopefully they can improve the way images cut into the vsync.

  • Mix

    Looks great indeed!

  • ashar javed

out now... not good as compared to the old one.. not satisfied.. very dissapointed of the google for the first time.. :(
