Last Updated: October 13th, 2013

Following several recent leaks and the official announcement earlier today, Google started pushing out a completely redesigned, simpler, cleaner, and faster version of the Play Store for Android. The previous version was 3.10.14 while the new one is 4.0.25, and we have the download mirrors for you right here.

The new Play Store really does look a lot better, especially on tablets. It groups similar content together, continues showing recommendations as you keep scrolling, and simplifies the purchasing process. I absolutely love the handy Install button in app lists - just click the menu icon at the top right corner of any card, then press Install.

One more thing: in-app purchases can now be performed without leaving the context of the app you're in - the Buy window simply floats on top of whatever triggered the IAP process. So much better:

Warning: If you're outside the U.S., you may not see featured/promotional content for a bit. Once Google is ready to roll this release out in other countries, the content should start populating as you would expect. The rest of the Play Store works just fine.

The APK, sent to us by a lucky reader (thanks, Brendan!), is signed by Google and upgrades your existing Play Store. The cryptographic signature guarantees that the file is safe to install and was not tampered with in any way. Rather than wait for Google to push this download to your devices, which can take weeks, download and install it just like any other APK and enjoy the new Play Store experience.

Thanks, Brendan Beaulieu!

as always ,android police never disappoints!!
now please get back to that APK teardown!

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

APK teardown was done, but nothing interesting was found that isn't already obvious.

      • Jeremy Gilliam

Shucks! I was hoping something magical would be found behind the scenes.

  • http://shanked.me/ Shank

I started going to clear Google Play's data and refreshed the page to find this. Thanks AP!

Any problems caused by different regions from doing this

Just lack of featured content for now.

    Thanx Brendan!!

    Nice! Android Police ftw!

    FIRST!!! :-P

      bitch please!
      i was first :P

  • Scott

Damn, no purchased app sort functionality. Oh well. =(

  • Blake

Mirror 3 gave me some virus pop ups. Might want to check on that.

    • Scott

      I used mirror 3 and didn't have a problem.

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Mirror 3 is Mediafire, a pretty popular file host.

  • Thomas

Now THIS is why I love Android Police!! Millions of thanks ;)

    • Thomas

It seems kind of strange that the "Home" tab is gone in the phone version, and there is no more "Featured" tab that features highlighted apps (which is in many occasions quite useful as it promotes high quality apps)

      • Patrik Zachar

        It's a bug, not a missing feature.

    • Ahmadovich

      Spectacular work...

  • Fernando

"Send SMS messages" in the permissions. That's correct?

    • Michael Katz

Yes, since you can actually share Play store links via SMS

    • Avrohom Eliezer Friedman

      3.10.14 had that as well

  • Edward Smith

    Way to win the race!!!

  • http://pixelsw.im/ Steve Heinrich

Lots more Roboto Light Italic.... mmm for my eyes

  • Hugo Bloem

Still got to get used to it... Don't know if I like it or not

  • atlouiedog

The presentation and types of categories on the main store page remind me of Netflix Instant.

  • WestIndiesKING

what happened to multi-select on the installed apps!!!!!!! WHAT DID YOU DO GOOGLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

edit:*it works long press on ONLY apps that arent installed*

    • lbrfabio

      what? It works fine

      • WestIndiesKING

how doyou multi-select? long press doesnt work for me under my apps, all page

        • WestIndiesKING

ahh never mind it only works on the ones that arent installed

          • lbrfabio

            yep. It's exactly like before

          • WestIndiesKING

well it isnt exactly as it was before. There was an icon on the right side of the apps that you can click on. No such thing here exist.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000003999549 Mike Harris

Now there's an X instead of the icon.

    • http://twitter.com/RaspberryDuff Matt

Whoa that is weird. Usually I just long-hold and it works fine:-/ Alas, I got rid of most of the apps I didn't want there a few months ago, but that's gonna be pretty annoying for new users.

      • WestIndiesKING

        look above it works

        • Matt

Ohh yeah now it's actually even better, since it highlights the ones that aren't installed to make it easier.

  • lok

Second mirror showed some device harm warning, is it normal?

    • mauric

Don't worry all .apk file downloads give that warning ;)

  • Spittie

Well, this is weird. Tried to clean cache, didn't change anything (on a Nexus 7).
Beside that, it's pretty and it also seems to be a bit faster than before.

And at the same time, it feels kinda weird... but maybe it's just because I'm not used yet to it.

    • Jack Roberts

Mine Is The Same I Suppose Its Because Its Not Ready For Other Countries Yet

      • Adrian Kenny

        Well this sucks.

        • http://my.opera.com/rafaelluik Rafael

Well you're side-loading the new version instead of waiting the official rollout, what did you expect really?

    • cc_star

Oh dear, surely that should be full screen?

    • lbrfabio

yep, I have this problem too on my phone

    • Devin

Same thing here in Canada. Good job Google.

      • cc_star

Why is it Google's fault if you've grabbed an APK before they've pushed it out to your device over the coming days or weeks.

      • Melvin

This is why Google doesn't like it when pre-release software is made available. Because people judge it as if it isn't freakin' pre-release software.

        • Devin

So ... let me try and understand here. Google releases the update, and now you consider it pre-release ... even though it's a signed APK that was released by Google. Gotcha.

          • Jadephyre

It was released... IN THE USA, not for the rest of the world, as it wasn't ready for those regions yet. Why's that so hard to understand ?
Yes, I installed it too, but I read the article carefully and knew what I was getting myself into. My screen looks exactly like in the screenshot up there, but it will eventually work, so i'm not worried.

            Why are you ?

          • Android User

            >> even though it's a signed APK that was released by Google. Gotcha.

            APK's are always signed. Gotcha.

(though you shouldn't distribute those with a debugging key, and that's probably why Google doesn't do that either)

      • patapongirl

Dude are you serious? You downloaded an apk from a blog and then you try to pin it on Google?

        Wait for the official release.

      • Devin

Rabid fanboy attacks I see. You people need to calm the **** down. I use Google just like you and am excited to use the new Play store. It's Google's fault for announcing something and pushing it out, but not having it ready. Usually if you announce something and release it, it is ready. Apparently that is lost on you crazy people.

        • Jonathan Perry

They only announced and released it in the US.

          • Devin

No they didn't. I love how American's think everything is specifically for them. This was announced on the official Android blog, and does not mention "US only" anywhere.

          • didibus

"Today we’ve started rolling out a redesigned Google Play store" [...] "People around the world should see it over the next few weeks."

I think that's pretty clear that it'll take a couple weeks for people around the world to get access to it. So please, wait a couple weeks like they said.

          • tylerbrainerd

            You could always try reading.

"People around the world should see it over the next few weeks."

          • Brandon Welling

You're an idiot. Another Canadian with an inferiority complex towards America cataloged in my memory. Canadians that are so quick to complain about and generalize Americans are like the fat girls in high school that talk bad about the pretty girl in school. Pathetic. Everyone else is talking about the google store update and what does the Canadian with something up his butt have to do? Make it a 'somethings wrong with Americans' issue. You failed to read effectively, made assumptions, then over generalized, then tried to defend your foolish self. At least everyone here now knows, Devin from Ontario is a smarmy little prick. On the other hand, cool Canadians, thanks for being cool.

        • tylerbrainerd

          You are an idiot.

          • Devin

Thanks, I didn't realize you knew me well enough to form a rational opinion of me.

          • Joey

They certainly didn't release it officially throughout the world.
So, it wasn't updated for you officially, you have no right to complain.
They only pushed the update for some countries.
So, it's your fault if you wanted to be a smartass by upgrading even though it wasn't officially pushed for you and then expect everything to be perfect.

  • Happy

It is SO SMOOTH! Thanks a lot!

no proper main-screen in germany... just 5 cards to apps, games, movies, music and books

      Same in UK

    • http://twitter.com/GethHerO GethHerO

      Same for me in Canada.

    • silaslenz

Well, i don't even get a home screen, it launches to "Top Paid" apps. So be happy you got something ;)

    • KroonBerg

In Sweden, it just goes straight to top paid apps..

      • http://www.facebook.com/ciprian.gavan Ciprian Gavan

        In Romania too :(

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

They did mention on the blog that it'll be rolling out throughout the world later, so the backend is probably just not ready for those outside the U.S. yet.

      • Patrik Zachar

Exactly what I thought, most countries have different featured apps displayed and because they haven't pushed the UK or any other version out yet, there aren't any featured apps out there yet.

    • G Mohal

      same here in canada

      • http://twitter.com/ing_chamu Ubaldo Flores

        same here in mexico too.

    • Fernando

      Same in Brazil

On tablets it seems no problem though (for me at least), I am in the Netherlands and on my tablet recommendations are still shown. On my phone there is no main tab to be found anywhere.

Ron did the teardown and found nothing new outside of the obvious things.

  • IncCo

    thanks !

  • muffstic

Keep getting your device isn't compatible messages on certain apps.

  • http://www.zadig.info Mario Gaucher

I installed this new Google Play on my device (Galaxy SIII with the latest CyanogenMod nightly). It's working fine... but when I open Google play, the only thing a see on the main screen are Apps, Movies, Magazines, games, book... there is nothing below that... no images of sections or no publicity for other things I could download or buy.

  • wojtas25

Installed but....in portrait mode its just a list with apps/games and need to scroll and scroll and scroll. In the old version were seen much more aps on the one page. hmm

  • Jeffrey Tarman

This is their best version yet

  • Guest

Well, at least it looks pretty, but it has some screen issues. it now displays half the amount of content it used to do. Editors' Choice gives a really really strange scaling look.

  • Steven

While I like the new design (mostly), I really, really, really wish countries that don't have the full Play Store (so only Apps) would also get a front page. Also, it needs some work on the Editor's Choice area and needs to remove the miniature menu buttons, like in Google Now. Mostly an enjoyable imrovement, though.

  • mauric

Well, at least it looks pretty, but it has some screen issues. it now displays half the amount of content it used to do. Editors' Choice gives a really really strange scaling look. there could at least have fitted two tiles there.

The "trending" page seems to differ quite a lot from the other pages, wow. Looks a lot better.

    • cc_star

Yep, as per other photos & comments it isn't ready, either for all countries or for all device types/screen sizes.

AP should amend the post or warn people.

      • mauric

I expected nothing less from google's most important app and I missed the "not the final version" line. Thought it would be according to the newspost about google rolling the store out today.

      • Youssef Chammas

It is fully working for me in the US on my two devices, HTC sensation and Nexus 7.

  • firethorn

Hm, on the N7 in the Apps category, I have a "Home" tab between Categories and Top Paid; tapping "see more" there leads to a "Recommended for you" page which is pretty cool.

However, on the N4 that Home tab is seemingly MIA. O.o
    Can someone confirm?

    • cc_star

There's a few problems mentioned in comments below, either for different screen sizes or for different regions.

      It may be worth waiting

      • firethorn

Too late to wait now since both devices are upgraded already. ;)
Also, it works perfectly fine only some views seem a tiny bit glitchy. No big deal though, I trust it'll normalize over time.

        • cc_star

First time I've ever held off on anything.
I think I'll wait until the UK backend or whatever it is, is up

          • firethorn

Probably makes sense. I'll just let myself be positively surprised when all the stuff that should be there finally gets displayed properly. In the meantime, I'm checking out some inverted gapps from RootzWiki... I wish all gapps had light and dark Holo versions and allow easy toggling via preferences.

      • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

You can always downgrade back by following one of the links at the top of the article.

  • Kristopher Linville

Mirror 6 worked just fine for me.

  • Raviteja

Like few other when I open play store I just see Apps,Games,Movies,Books just below that...

  • JonJJon

    My Apps section:
Installed > All > "Purchased".....we can all dream for it to happen one day :P

  • Himmat Singh

Great and thanks AP! My only complaint is that the app icons are wayyy too big in landscape mode.

  • http://twitter.com/Venom_Vendor VenomVendor

Gives me pixelated low quality images, I see nothing on the main screen but 4 tiles apps, games, movies and books in Main screen,
Removing apps from my account is causing me pain in my A** again.
am gonna revert back to 3.10.14 version :)

  • gunsranger

Android Police .. Thanks for the apk :)
    Tested this for Indian device...
Felt the whole app is loading slower , the UI seems to be unfinished ? with very plain Borders and dull . Categories section blank....Apps section directly launches to Top Paid apps..
Old Market app used to have Featured App page which i found much better ...

    • Patrik Zachar

      Read below, it's a bug.

      • gunsranger

        yeah .. got it :)

  • selva

Thanks AP. You guys are great.

For those having issue with installing (install button won't work) IG you have a floating app or a gesture enables force stop them and then try, same with floating apps. Hope this helps

    • eKimoV

      What is a floating app?

  • Greek_Ice

    Thanks much AP.

  • enoch861

Honestly, probably the best Play Store/Market update to date.
It's.. beautiful and actually makes browsing apps easier. Kudos Google.

  • CristianoAdiutori

    Awesome! Great! Thanx!

  • ViperX

I'm getting problem parsing package error when trying to install this version. Any ideas how to fix this? Runing cyanogenmod 10 on Samsung Galaxy S Wifi 5.0 INTL.

  • ViperX

    Deleted my comm?

  • Magnus100

Actually a significant improvement over the last version.
    Good work Google.

  • David Dudovitz

Is the website going to be updated anytime soon? It looks like version 3.x at the moment, and still doesn't support the app's wishlist feature.

  • David Dudovitz

It also wouldn't kill to give the web version a mobile look as well, so you can use the website or the app for updates without having to zoom in.

    • ddpacino

THIS! Wait, if you're on a mobile, you should just go through the app, or redirect to it. But I still agree.

      • David Dudovitz

What I mean is if I am with a Nexus 4 for example, and I want to update my Nexus 7 while I am away and I want to use the web interface to do it, it is hard to do so due to the desktop style layout. I should be able to update tablet apps from my phone.

        • ddpacino

Thanks for detailing that. A very plausible scenario, but also a reason why I like auto-updates. On the other hand, I don't enable them much because I'd like to see the update details before installing, so I could really make use of this feature. It's Google -- all of their websites should have mobile versions out of the gate! Lol

          • tym0

That's why i would prefer the update notification to point to the playstore even when the download is done.

  • http://twitter.com/hjayarr Henry Meuwissen Jr

Entirely possible that this is just me / ROM related, but I just installed this on my EVO 3D running negalite blurom 4.0.4 Sense 3.6 and about 10 minutes later, I noticed a number of apps started continuously FC'ing (including Avast Mobile, Google Play Services, and Perfect keyboard Pro). In addition, it appears some app data may have been deleted from my SDCard and Fancy Widgets was uninstalled. I understand the apk from this thread is officially Google signed, but fair warning anyway. Time to restore a recent nandroid backup.

  • http://profiles.google.com/danielm.nc Daniel Marcus

Direct download/Mirror, (feel free to repost)

  • jack

Still lacks an important feature: "Skip this version" for updates.

    • Chris

just don't download it. Thats why I turned auto update off.. I like to see whats changed and if there are any issues with it by reading the reviews...

  • Chris

Not impressed. Its the same as the old one (as in core functionality) just with a new look.

  • Marlo

    That's really good to hear.

  • Alan

All good here in the UK, aside from the Categories section not populating because it's not rolled out here it all seems to work fine and it's a little bit faster as well.

  • Brenden

I would like to see a "Purchased" tab under the "Installed" apps tab.

  • mat ireland

Good news for Ireland after update to new version of playstore you can buy music NOW :)

  • loranz Yousif

I've been able to get Music now ever since I installed this. I'm in NZ.

  • http://www.facebook.com/ShinobiPhoenix Cody Shiranai

So, I wonder why Google doesn't just advertise and put out their own download links or announce it and let you get it from one of Google's own pages (we would just get it via mobile browser... like we are now). This seems so "backalley" for something so necessary, yet it takes so long to get it the regular way. Is it due to mobile service companies?

  • mat

Good news for Ireland after update to new version of playstore you can buy music NOW :)

    • RTR2011

People actually buy music from Google Play?

  • Bleakvision

I can't put my finger on it., but I think this looks even worse than the last version. List entries are just way too big... I can only see five items at once on a N4.

Can I get a mirror server that isn't a toolbar, additional application, or a damn download manager? All of which are crap!! Give me the file already. Don't give me this it pays for the site. We've only just got books, devices and movies in the India store, so I'm assuming we might have issues with this latest version before the official rollout, as have other commenters. Will wait for the OTA update. Thanks anyway AP!

They went back to the ugly green they had when it was called Android Market, but the design is nice

  • Matthew Fry

Purrty. I didn't think I'd like an interface that has wasted space but it really makes the cards pop and they are quite elegant.

  • David Akers

Hopefully it fixes the bugs i have had for the last year with downloads... i still get the errors with certain app that dont download via wifi / cellular... you have to switch from one to the other or it just doesnt work... eg ... I cant load up the main page from 3g Data, if I switch to wifi it pops up... then install a game and it doesnt do it via wifi give invalid file when on wifi and have to switch to 3g... have cleared data reinstalled... clean rom ect and still exists... just learned to accept it and just install via the play store opposed to use the phone !!

Google changed most of the text, especially the smaller text from black to grey on white thus making the lack of contrast more difficult and more strenuous and uncomfortable to read.

Why not make the text even lighter grey on white so as to make everything totally unreadable.

I previously enjoyed perusing the Play Store. Now viewing the Play Store is so uncomfortable it just pisses me off.

No option to change view. I'll bet this design will result in lower participation.

From what was difficult to read, the design is less exciting and more difficult to discern featured items.

My handset has a high res bright super LCD display. Perhaps the designers use crapo high contrast unnatural color limited greyscale amoled displays.

A giant step backward. Horrible and blah.

Where could i download the apk?

Why games are showing in my apps section too?

  • guru

  • MaximeJ

    Thanks for the apk !

  • RTR2011

This sucks. Everything looks big, clunky, and dumbed down. Another step backwards.

  • Arsalaan LaFleur

I've installed this new version of Play Store, it works well but the home page where it shows the cards for Apps and games, underneath it there's a large white space :( same on my nexus 7, how do i fix this or revert back to play store 3

  • http://www.facebook.com/brian.hillard.94 Brian Hillard

    Thank you Android Police!
This new Play Store is great, and works fine in the UK on my beloved Nexus 7.
However it seems Google still can't tell the difference between apps and games.
When I select the Apps category why does it list games too?
Come on Google is it too much to ask?
But like I said it is nice:-)

  • Frank

The new app really sucks - and the green is horrid. The app is slow (on a note 2), it hangs a ton, and I cannot easily navigate as compared to the previous app

  • hasan

    I Love google play store

  • http://www.facebook.com/lashan.lilo La-shan Lilo

    thanks android market

  • Frank

Yet another debacle of this new (ugly, slow, and counter intuitive) Android market/play store app is that it set ALL of my apps to "Auto Update". So, the versions that I knew worked, had the settings right, and was familiar with are now replaced and my data plan was massively impacted by the ill-planned, poorly considered option to override the existing settings for the apps.

Not to mention that they put the "Auto update" setting in a less visible place in the menu for each app installed.

    Not all that bright google!

  • Frank

Since I am on the subject and there is no place to leave feedback for this "app" at google I will take the time to opine on the "Recommended for You" list. I have installed/purchased a few hundred apps from the play store so they should have an idea... let's see.

    - I have never purchased a game - yet it offers a tone of games and mostly games.
    - The next category of what it offers is bus/muni apps - hmmm. We drive here for the most part.
    - I have not eaten at McD for some time - yet an app for it is recommended for ME
    - Been to one giants game (in the 60s) and have not seen a game in 40 years. Yet... in the list
    - I have not watched the news for several decades... News apps
    - Sorry - not in Sacramento - don't need that app
    - Golf? Really? I have not held a club except as a kid and that was to clobber melons
    - Never been and probably won't go to Hawaii - don't need those apps
    - Nope - have received about 20 lottery ticks as a gift - never purchased any - not for me

Summarily there is not even ONE recommended app that is one that I would use. Brilliant data mining google!

    • Rudy Belova

Yeah, their recommendations suck for me too. It's usually justin beiber albums (even though i never buy music on the play store) and random books like "101 ways to kill your husband". It's worthless.

    superb work android police

  • SebaKL

I don't like the round and huge icons. Feel like I'm on 640x480 computer all over again, with Just 4 apps per screen. Plus, I have lots of apps, it's a real waste of screen real estate space to scroll endlessly through the list, displaying chunky looking thumbnails while keeping the text tiny. I would love the ability to adjust that at will.
