You read it right - one of the most popular apps on Android, and long-time holo holdout Twitter, has finally updated its look. And it's nice.

unnamed (3) unnamed (4) unnamed (5)

The new 4.0 release has an all-new feel, and improved hashtag and mention support in the search and compose windows. You also now tap and hold on tweets to bring up the action menu (reply, retweet, favorite, share). Here's the full changelog from the Play Store:

New in this release of Twitter for Android:
- We’ve got a brand new look and feel crafted for Android 4.0+. Navigate seamlessly between your favorite parts of Twitter with a simple swipe.
- It’s easier to connect with friends and join conversations with @username and #hashtag suggestions that appear as you search or compose a Tweet
- Discover, install and launch your favorite apps from Tweets
- Other bug fixes and improvements

Apparently, you can install and launch apps directly from tweets - an option will appear in tweets with certain content (eg, Foursquare checkins) to launch an app, or install it if you don't have it. You can read more about the update at the official Twitter blog, as well.

I want to take a moment to thank Dick Costolo,

For doing the right thing by making Twitter Holo.

      • Abhigyan Banerjee

        Two upvotes for you sir.

  • Matthew

I have to ask. I'm currently using AOKP rom and I notice with official twitter app when composing a tweet the composition box expands underneath my swiftkey keyboard and stretches up to the top screen cutting off a portion of the top part of the box... it's really weird and i hoped would go away but anyone on a custom rom i'm curious if you have a similar issue?

  • cybik

    I don't have the ThreeDots.

    • Danny Holyoake

Me neither - no three dots for me. :)

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ David Ruddock

Weird, I have a One review unit and I see them on mine.

      • cybik

        HTC. There's your problem :P

      • cybik

        Check the +.

    • Evan

I can't tell if you mean you don't have an overflow menu or if you are making a Demolition Man reference.

I'm going to go with Demolition Man.

      • cybik

        DemoMan, of course.

  • Derek Duncan

"Oh, and it still has the legacy three-dot menu overflow button along the bottom. Because Twitter apparently still wants a little bit of ire from Android users."

I don't see any 3-dot overflow in my N4. Everything looks proper.

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ David Ruddock

Weird, I can see it on my One.

      • Phil Nolan

        No dots on RAZR Maxx.

  • MrJigolo

    WOWOWOWOW

  • http://twitter.com/NitrozK Nitroz

The legacy menu button has finally vanished! Not showing on my HTC One, or my Nexus 4

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ David Ruddock

It shows on my One. :

      • http://twitter.com/NitrozK Nitroz

Really? Oh, I know why. I mapped the back button to be the menu key, instead of that horrid bar that takes up precious screen real estate.

      • yahyoh

no menu at all on my Note2 not even 3 dots :D
the only way to go to setting is in profile tab :/

        • Alan Fortte

Use the menu button on the Note 2...?

          • yahyoh

            it's make nothing !! :/

    • Floris

It still is showing in the search and options section.. :(

    • Ian

It's in the compose tweet menu. The only option is "home"... smh.

    • JAD88

It shows up on my nexus 4 when i look at someones profile pic, compose a tweet, and press the settings button

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=551040694 Hugo Clery

Is it me or the font is barely readable ? Way too thin imo (I'm on N4)

    • efan

you can change the font size. but i agree that the thickness is too thin

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=551040694 Hugo Clery

Yep I know but I didn't need it before and even at 16pt, font size is not very readable, I have to litteraly put my phone much closer to my eyes to be able to read like before..

    FALCON PRO or DIE.

    • ScottColbert

Falcon Pro is useless if you have multiple accounts unfortunately.

      • BubbleSort

Tweetings is pretty nice for Multiple accounts. I had issues with push for both.

  • Dan

Now they need to implement embedded picture/video preview in tweets

  • spacekobra

First time I've ever been enticed to use the official client.
But alas, I gave up on twitter a while back.

  • Nathaniel Webb

I'm guessing the menu overflow is from an ActionBarSherlock implementation that splits the action bar for certain devices if needed. The menu button is alone at the bottom by default.

  • http://TransientTangent.com/ Blake Mitchell

Let me know when they come out with a scrollable 4x4 widget.

    • elnator

It's sad that 3rd party twitter apps are so much better than the official one. I've been using Plume for years and has had a scrollable 4x4 widget for at least the last 3 years.

      • http://TransientTangent.com/ Blake Mitchell

Yeah, I stuck with Plume for that alone until recently when Falcon integrated it with their app. The thing is, I would use Twitter's app if they had that for no other reason than real time notifications.

  • Guest

Is the menu button is shame gone? (Someone check on a Nexus device)

    • http://twitter.com/NitrozK Nitroz

it certainly is! Confirmed on a Nexus 4, in case you were wondering.

    • http://nagorski.eu/ zeten88

Menu button was moved to "Me" tab (button with "gear"). That you mean?

  • Phil Nolan

Pretty terrible. It's very laggy and wastes a tone of space on tablets. Plus STILL no columns. I hate that they bought TweetDeck only to kill it.

    Edit: and it just crashed

  • springyman

    Still no tablet support.

  • Matt

Did you even download/read the blog post you linked to? This is NOT up to AP standards.

"Oh, and it still has the legacy three-dot menu overflow button along
the bottom. Because Twitter apparently still wants a little bit of ire
    from Android users."

I don't, as well as no one else in the comments.

"Apparently, you can install and launch apps directly from tweets - but I'm not sure how."

In the blog post, there's detailed instructions about how to do this. There's an option "Open in Foursquare/Instagram/Facebook/etc. app" when you select a tweet. THERE'S A SCREENSHOT. If you would've even taken the time to look at the pictures on the blog post you would know. "If you don't have the Flickr app on your phone, you can tap to install it from the tweet."

Come on, AP. We'd rather have a better article 30 seconds later than a crappy one immediately.

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ David Ruddock

The 3-dot menu appeared on my device - why would I mention it otherwise? I've removed that part since you started typing your comment, apparently, because no one else seemed to be getting it. If that isn't a forgivable mistake, I don't know what is.

As for the app launch / install, thanks, I didn't notice it, and I'll clarify. Believe it or not, I'm trying to do a few things at once, and this post is one of them. Now you can go back to being an ass to someone else on the internet - have a great day.

      • Rich Dillon

I get the 3 dot menu aswell on my DNA, but I've come to expect That haha

  • Nick Schiwy

*excitement* I might actually install the twitter app again

  • wideopn11

I don't like that the app carries it's own fonts now (Roboto-Light, LightItalic, Medium, MediumItalic). I switched my system fonts to the new Roboto-Slab...now I need to switch them on a per app basis. Why not just use system fonts Twitter?

  • http://www.facebook.com/sharanbngr Sri Sharan Banagiri

Gimme an inbuilt browser and I don't mind switching

  • http://www.androidpolice.com/author/eric-ravenscraft/ Eric Ravenscraft

Not to look a free gift horse in the mouth, but I would trade every last ounce of Holo in this app for a decent tablet layout. This is something the iPad has had for months now. It really shouldn't be that difficult.

I never really thought the old app looked bad and, frankly, this just feels like Holo for Holo's sake. Not better, not worse. Just "eh." Unless you've made Holo your new religion, there is exactly zero benefit to this update. Well, excuse me. Except for swiping between tabs. That's...cool.

Still waiting to see if I'm going to continue to get a truckload of "You have new interactions, but fuck you if you think we're going to tell you what they are, may as well keep Falcon Pro installed IF YOU CAN GET A TOKEN HAHAHAHAHAHA" notifications. Also, that's some pretty foul language Twitter. You might wanna chill out with that.

    • Abhijeet Mishra

yeah, there's nothing in the update that actually improves things look-wise. Still the ugly blue bar, buttons still look the same, font doesn't look good either. But let's hope further updates improve things, Twitter seems to be on a focus to make the UI consistent across platforms, WP8 has the same UI now, no Metro.

    • Joshua

      1. Yea, thou shalt use Holo in all thine apps, and thou shalt have a proper tablet layout, so sayeth the LORD our GOOGLE.
      2. And the tablet layout shall be clean, and it shall be kept Holy.

Is this an April Fools joke?

  • ithehappy

That's the font and no way to change it? I'm not talking about its size, any way to make it bold? Bad update tbh!

  • John Smith

    i would like a big 4X5 Widget.

  • Mike

Wow. Its about time Twitter. Don't know if I should stick with falcon pro or use this now.

  • rsavaiano

Someone needs to tel them that they forgot to update the widgets as well...

  • Bradley Ruiz

are you finally allowed to paste text to tweet ?

  • Mehmet Fatih YILDIRIM

Falcon Pro fucks this up in the arse.

  • http://www.Nave360.com Sebastian Gorgon

    still no tabby interface

  • http://twitter.com/elmo61 Stephen Williamson

still no wireless charger in the uk though !

  • Bernex

I believe they also removed the photo editor with effects because at least for me it doesn't show anymore when adding a photo.

  • http://twitter.com/Poussah Poussah

The missing menu from all main screens means no easy way to switch between multiple accounts. If I want to see home and @ screens of another account, I now have to open a compose windows, then the menu, switch accounts and close the compose window. Pretty stupid and annoying…

EDIT: or go to the last tab and click the appropriate icon. The menu was waaaay easier…

  • elnator

PLUME is still far far far better than twitter's app ... so sad.

  • selonmoi

Prettier, but still useless. Continuously losing my place in my stream and bumping me back up to the top.

Carbon is still the only Twitter client that I've found solidly holds my place

  • Nicolás Rezzano

I'm sticking with falcon pro anyways.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1192350391 Tom Uytterhoeven

The font looks so much better now and the swiping is so much more straightforward!
