Google Keep has once again popped back into existence. It had previously gone live for about a half hour on St. Patrick's Day before Google took it down. We managed to snag a full set of screenshots before it went down.

Update: Hands-On With Google Keep For Android: Notes, Checklists, Voice Notes, Pictures, Widgets, And Voice Actions Integration

So if you'd like to check out Google's new note-taking app, I suggest you hurry and head on over to https://drive.google.com/keep/. Until we see some kind of official launch post from a Google blog, I don't expect it to be there for long.

Update: It's official.

As far as I can tell, it works exactly the same as it did a few days ago. It still isn't integrated with Drive in any way, (despite the URL) and there still isn't an Android app.

We'll keep you posted.

Update: The Android app is live now, and it's looking pretty neat:

Quickly capture what’s on your mind and recall it easily wherever you are. Create a checklist, enter a voice note or snap a photo and annotate it. Everything you add is instantly available on all your devices – desktop and mobile.

With Google Keep you can:
• Keep track of your thoughts via notes, lists and photos
• Have voice notes transcribed automatically
• Use homescreen widgets to capture thoughts quickly
• Color-code your notes to help find them later
• Swipe to archive things you no longer need
• Turn a note into a checklist by adding checkboxes
• Use your notes from anywhere - they are safely stored in the cloud and available on the web at http://drive.google.com/keep

Darn no go on GApps accounts works on my personal though!

    • blahmoomoo

My educational GApps account has it...

      • http://twitter.com/MothyWing Tim Wing

I have a Government Gapps account and i get 404 error when going to the link

  • Josh Ingram

Pretty basic. Is this supposed to be a replacement for Tasks?

    • herpderp

Yeah seems to be, maybe competing with springpad/evernote?

    • Sqube

Well, the lack of announcement makes me think it isn't final. Maybe they're saving the fanfare for Google I/O and the announcement of Key Lime Pie?

That said, I'd LOVE to see a program that replaces Tasks... or at least something standalone that I can use for checklists and what have you.

      • Dinofan01

I still need dates and reminders for this. That would make it great.

  • http://twitter.com/yeshu1984 Yeshvanth

cool! I am using it now!

  • adi19956

Feels a touch undercooked without an app or integration

  • Elijah

I hope this replaces google tasks

    • woj_tek

why? it doesn't have dates/reminders so it's kinda useless as a Tasks replacement...

      • leo Finn

        For now

      • GazaIan

It could definitely be a thing to merge in.

        • woj_tek

          merge? I would say 'add'...

  • Hmm

yeah, something like a google note app for android 5.0 would be nice

  • http://twitter.com/omac_ranger Logan Graham
  • PoliceChief

Man it's fast. This could easily replace my dropbox syncing plain text solution. PROTIP: Hit ctrl + enter as a shortcut for clicking the "done" button.

    • Ygor Vaz

      boy O.O google is fast

  • Sam

As a former Google intern who dogfooded Keep, I can tell you there is much more on the way ;)

    • http://twitter.com/mreyeball Mr. Eyeball

      You can't just tease that...explain!

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

      Do tell.

    • Mr. Mark

    • Derek Traini

Cmon man! What is the point of teasing when you won't tell! :)

    • http://twitter.com/and1945 Andreas Brandenborg

Glad to know. I was actually thinking "How is this going to make me ditch Evernote?".

      I will be patient then.

    • http://twitter.com/cabbieBot cabbieBot

PLEASE don't bloat it up! The reason I want an evernote alternative is because they've added so many features I don't want/need and it makes the app bloated and slow! I want to just be able to tap a button, type a note (and NOT have to make a title) and tap another button to be done!

      • BetterWithRoot

I currently use Catch notes. It's very simple and backs all my notes up too.

      • kgb

Gnotes is the best I've found. Simple, syncs across my tablet, kindle, phone, and pc automatically, can be locked with a passcode, and you can do the picture thing in it if you want too.

    • http://profiles.google.com/cblasko Chris Blasko

Please tell me that there is a way to share lists between accounts? I want my wife to be able to make a shopping list and then share it to my account so that I can then open this app and view the list. I've tried all the alternatives like Astrid and those other apps and none of them offer that feature in any intuitive or reliable way.

      • infogulch

I completely agree! I've been using the Our Groceries app: Multiple lists, can cross off items, syncs between devices by using a simple email.

      • Lucas

evernote has done this for years

        • http://profiles.google.com/cblasko Chris Blasko

Evernote, to my knowledge, does not have the ability to create a list of items that can be checked off as each item is completed. I've used Evernote for quite a while and I've never notice such a feature.

Edit: Just tried. Unless I'm completely missing something, this isn't possible.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=30507560 Derek Edwards

You can do this with Tasks...

        • http://profiles.google.com/cblasko Chris Blasko

No you cannot, you can email a task to someone, but you do not have real time syncing between the two users. I realize that I didn't explain this explicitly the first time, but that's what I was getting at.

      • br_hermon

It isn't a interactive list but.. you could do this with Google Drive. It's what my wife and I do. Just create a word document and then share it, or the entire folder with your wife. Anytime either of you change it, the other will see the changes.

    • http://twitter.com/and1945 Andreas Brandenborg

Sam, I only need one thing answered. Will I be able to do list that does not have a tickbox?

      • infogulch

Just start typing a note. Keep has a plain note mode and a list mode.

        • http://twitter.com/and1945 Andreas Brandenborg

I deleted that after you wrote that, so I guess it didnt get it.

I found out, but thank you :)

    • infogulch

So you're saying you used it before it was popular?

      Dogfooders are the real hipsters.

    • http://www.radioshak.co.uk Shakil Shaikh

Hey Sam, do you know if this service will still be around in a year's time?

  • Daniel Söderström
  • Kelvin Davis

    Knew it'd be here wednesday!

  • skitchbeatz

I just don't see the point....

    • http://twitter.com/MothyWing Tim Wing

Business need this fo alot of reasons

    • omegavesko

You can't seriously be telling me you see no use for a note-taking app. Have you ever had the need for a checklist or reminder in your life?

  • Derek Traini
  • bydavidrosen

i wish they'd turn this into an official way of putting sticky notes in the notification bar. i use Notification Notes but its kinda buggy.

  • Mr. Mark

text formatting and tables would be nice, but i know this is an early product. hopefully those features are implemented in the future. i'm liking it so far!

  • Pamela Hill

For now it's a simple note app, which I love, because it can replace the Color Notes app on my phone AND sync to the web version. This would also work to replace tasks in the calendar, which does not sync with phone.
It doesn't replace Evernote for more complicated tasks management, which is totally fine. I need both a simple & complex note taking. (I'm a little type A).

  • Sarah Puls

Let's see if this can out-do Catch Notes... That has been so extremely helpful for me.

  • Lederpino

Hmmm simple UI thats great to use. Theres a widget... seems like ill be saying good bye to evernote

  • calvinnbs

I really hope I can import all of my google reader starred items into this!

  • Kwadwo Firempong-Boakye

    • omegavesko

You really can't expect Google to continue supporting Gingerbread, especially since no current Nexus devices are on it. This has been coming a long time now, just look at the difference between the Gingerbread and 4.0+ Gmail apps.

      • Kwadwo Firempong-Boakye

yeah you are absolutely right . . . its just that I've been waiting for an integrated app like this for a while and now its out I cant support it because my device updates end at 2.3.6 =( I guess i'll just have to wait till I get a new device . . . if I do

        • omegavesko

Which device? You could always flash a custom ROM, at least get it up to ICS.

  • adi19956

Just like to congratulate the AP team on being so incredibly fast with this kind of stuff. No other news site, none is this good

  • infogulch

We already have a blog entry: http://goo.gl/LG9z6 (yes I got it from Google Reader)

    Also there's a new design:

    * Google Logo is grayscale
    * Social/profile/settings stuff is now part of the top nav bar

    • Freak4Dell

I think my favorite part of the site is that the account dropdown is in the black bar now. I can't tell you how many times I get annoyed seeing that stupid dropdown below the bar, sticking out like a sore thumb. I really hope they start changing all their sites to put the dropdown there.

The monochrome Google logo is lame, though.

      • infogulch

Wait you don't like it? I like it much better. Less distracting from the function.

        • Freak4Dell

Nah, I like the bright colorful logo. It's much more representative of what Google is.

    • Kelvin Davis

It's actually the legacy setting in most places. Google just can't decide.

  • xsirxx

Uhh wont let me install on my Photon Q, what the hell?

    • atlouiedog

Just installed on my Photon Q without issue.

    • xsirxx

Yea just looked up. My bad, saw my son was logged in. cant waiiitttt

  • Michael Ingraham

Will there be offline capability so you can get to your notes it without a network connection? And would offline be available on Android, not just w/in Chrome on a PC.

  • Garret McGraw-Hanson

I broke it. Something to do with deleting my only keep or something. I can't access it anymore :(

  • http://twitter.com/Vizualize a.d.AM

Basic note taking across all devices with the ability to add pics and color code. Seems alright to me!

  • HellYeahGoogle

will this be put to rest in the next spring cleaning?

    • infogulch

Will they *puts on glasses* Keep it?

      • Matthew Fry

*puts on glasses* Ok Glass Keep it?

  • xsirxx

    "Oops! An error occurred.
Please click here to reload the page"
I have officially bombed Keep. Everytime I login now I get that message :(. Guess ill have to just use the app until they fix the bug.

    • http://www.buttie.pl/ buttie

Yep, same here. I guess we might have killed it. ;)

    • Jill

Yea, I'm getting that error too. Hope they fix it soon!

    • Derik Taylor

      This makes me sad...

  • Guest

Interesting, you can add it as a lockscreen widget on android 4.2+

  • mechapathy

Just found out that you can set it as default for the "note to self" voice command in Google Now. Awesome!

    • infogulch

I get the feeling that Google is really going to start integration between their various services full force.

      • perfectlyreasonabletoo

Here's hoping the rumor's true and we finally get ONE SINGLE UNIFIED VOICE/VIDEO/TEXT CHAT SYSTEM.

    • selonmoi

Great find! That's a really nice little integration.

    • FRGuzman

That's great, but then again it doesn't seem to work if your device is not set up in English...

      • mechapathy

I'm not aware of the voice commands for other languages. The phrase "note to self" is a colloquialism, so if other voice commands work, you might try saying it differently. Though I just tried using US Spanish as my voice search language and couldn't get it to work. It transcribed me properly, but didn't launch an action.

        • FRGuzman

Yes, that's what happens to me too. When I say "nota me gusta Android Police" it just does a Google search... All this features and everything related with Google Now is so awesome, but they are kind of forgetting the rest of the world, IMHO...

          • GazaIan

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that translated "note I like Android Police"? Have you ever used the note to self command prior to using Google Now? (Since the note to self has been around since 2.1 if I'm not mistaken).

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000820908978 Влатко Стојанов

    Don't kill Google Reader!

    • perfectlyreasonabletoo

Reader's been on life support for 2 years, it's time to let it die. There's better alternatives, like feedly. It's baffling Google didn't have a cross-platform alternative already in place, but what's done is done.

  • Zak Taccardi

How can we share a list between two google accounts?

  • http://www.themmteam.com RealtorRyan

Any Google Apps accounts getting access on the web version? Keep getting an error on... Keep...

  • lokiisyourmaster

Looks like the server is overloaded at the moment :)

  • http://twitter.com/jujurko Jurica Jurković

I need Chrome extension for this!

  • Dinofan01

Any use Scratchpad on Chrome OS? I hope they merge these. I want that convenient little extension for this as well as reminders like Tasks. That would be perfect.

  • Matthew Fry

So uh... am I the only one who's confused that it's a Drive url but you can't get to Drive from it or from Drive to it? And that Drive doesn't even list your notes? And that it's a completely different interface than Drive? Why/How is this part of Drive?

    • Freak4Dell

I can only assume that it's not quite done yet. I tried a few different URLs to get to it, because Google is usually smart and sets up redirects for several URLs, but it seems only the drive.google.com/keep URL actually works. That seems to be the ONLY way to even access this service outside of the Android app.

      • Matthew Fry

Looks like you're right. The blog post says: You can access, edit and create new notes on the web at http://drive.google.com/keep and in the coming weeks you'll be able to do the same directly from Google Drive.

  • Michael McGrade

Now add the ability to share a list and make it usable across multiple users editing a list...I'll be sold...as long as they don't just kill it like Reader.

  • hldc1

Considering what happened to Google Reader, I don't know if I can try any of Google's new products ever again.

  • Abhisshack D

    Springpad is way much better

  • perfectlyreasonabletoo

You can tell this has been a long time coming, the product video shows a Galaxy Nexus.

  • http://www.facebook.com/eilandhall Isaac Eiland-Hall

As someone locked into a previous version of Android, I'm very bummed that I can't install this on my phone. :(

    • barak

Same here - I'd love to try it but it's not available for Gingerbread. :(

  • roryh

How long before they sh1t-can it like Reader? Our data is safe with Google.... NAAWWT!

  • tym0

This looks awesome between this and the new google play I'm so looking forward the unified google now look in Key LIme Pie. Sharing with evernote works great i think im gonna switch to keep for temporary notes and just share them to evernote if I ever need to keep them. (no pun intended)
