Another day, another beta update from Swype. Today, the company announced a new version that brings a enhances a few features including adding Advanced Language Models for Hindi and Belgian Dutch. The overall tap responsiveness has been improved. The Smart Editor and Word Choice List (in Polaris Office) behaviors have also been refined.

Here's the full change log:

Swype Beta v1.4.9.13905

  • Advanced Language Models added for Hindi and Belgian Dutch
  • Responsiveness for tap input improved for all languages
  • Improved overall Smart Editor behavior and implemented some bug fixes
  • Fixed a Gingerbread crash that occurred when rotating device into landscape mode
  • Fixed miscellaneous crashes reported by the Beta community
  • Fixed an issue where default Android voice input ('mic'/'microphone') icon displayed instead of Dragon logo
  • Changed subtype text in notification drawer to be more accurate
  • Word Choice List behavior improved in Polaris Office

Obviously, the new beta also brings with it a bunch of stability improvements and bug fixes. Existing Swype Beta users can wait for the update, which the company says may take up to 72 hours to roll out.

Wait for the Kii idiots to tell us how much better Kii is in 3, 2, 1..

    • HellG

I prefer Swype but there's no need to be rude, everyone can choose the keyboard that fits him better and express his admiration to it as he sees fit, no need to call anyone an "idiot" if you don't agree with him/her

Am I alone in the fact that I can never get the updates to download, and usually have to go and re-install the beta installer as well as the keyboard just to get things right?

    • Biyobe

That's because they feel the need to tie it to WiFi only... which is asinine. definitely a pain to uninstall and re-install everytime... I keep hearing good things about SwiftKey... maybe it's time for me to jump....

      • Haedocynic

It never works for me either, not even on Wifi. I don't think that's it. Galaxy Nexus.

I use both, but if you're used to Swyping, stay with swype. SwiftKey has TERRIBLE swyping, but it does have AMAZING word prediction if you type normally. I wish these two just merged, would be awesome.

    • NexusKoolaid

No, you're not alone. I've had more than my fair share of headaches due to their goofy distribution model. If they ever decide to make Swype available in the Play store and have it update like other apps I might consider switching back to Swype, but I've moved on to SwiftKey and couldn't be happier.

      • Haedocynic

Or you can just not update Swype all the time and stick with an older version? Swype is good as it is, better prediction and correction of swipes than Swiftkey (I use both).

    • dobbsy

Never works for me, either. Right now it says an update is primed for installation and that I should click and when I do, nothing happens.

So I go to the beta site, download the installer yet again... and that doesn't work either.

Swype is an amazing product. However, the company is run by idiots. Swiftkey is inferior and has far, far more users just because it's easier to get. I am amazed at how a company that can put out such a well-thought-out program can be so blind that their distribution model is killing them. If the app weren't so fantastic, no one would put up with this nonsense and the company would have gone the way of the dodo by now.

After downloading update and tapping update in swype just tap back button - install app screen will appear :) (gn4)

"Fixed an issue where default Android voice input ('mic'/'microphone') icon displayed instead of Dragon logo" - If only it were the Android voice input.

Why use swype when you can use swiftkey?

    • Brett Warren

I've used both, swype is better at gesture typing. Swiftkey is better at prediction and has Google Voice typing built into the keyboard. I just wish swype would let you choose Google Voice typing in the keyboard instead of Dragon.

      • Haedocynic

Agreed. Note also than Swype has much better correction options: you have more words to pick from when it recognised the wrong word.

    • Thatguyfromvienna

Because Swype is a lot better.
I use both and give Swiftkey a chance about once a week only to return to Swype after writing two or three things.

I'm just glad they fixed the "swiping from comma results in .com" bug.
