AccuWeather is one of the leading apps for getting more information than you could ever possibly need about the position of the sun, clouds, and the statistical likelihood that precipitation will fall from the sky. It has not, however, been the leader in Holo interfaces among weather apps (the Weather Channel beat it to the punch last week). Today, it catches up, though, with a brand spanking new UI.

It's not just menu bars and Roboto that are being added for this interface overhaul. The company has also improved the widgets, allowing them to be resizable. Which, you know, all widgets should be. Life's just better that way. There's also severe weather alerts for tablet users and customizable forecasts.

Here's the full changelog:

What's in this version:

3.0.1
• Completely redesigned for tablets and phones, with landscape & portrait modes
• NEW! Multi-location, resizable widgets with more detail.
• NEW! Customizable My AccuWeather forecasts.
• NEW! Pushed severe weather notices for tablets.
• NEW! European radar and a snapshot view for your saved locations.
Please re-add widgets.

You can grab the update to the free app via the widget below.

When apps go all Holo, I find myself downloading it straight away and staring at it.

Haha. I imagine you doing that with the same expression as your avatar.

Pandering to r/androidcirclejerk now, are we?

This looks MUCH better than The Weather Channel. Though, Eye In Sky beats them all.

    • Rafy286

Mostly agree, though I wish Eye in the Sky gave more thorough information. Working outside, up to date information such as hourly updates are a must.

you know what would be cool? if you could get beautiful widgets to launch this

tap on weather icon, shows bw weather screen but tap on the specific day or the weather warning and it opens this app to that day or warning. how cool would that be?

  • RedPandaAlex

I like this trend. The fact that we have a choice of high-brand-recognition services with nice looking holo apps is kind of mind-blowing.

    1weather has them all beat

The widgets look horrible in Apex Launcher with my 8x4 home screen. The temperature and the sun icon are on top of each other.

Seems they're making bad assumptions about the number of pixels per row.

    • http://blog.ravrahn.net/ Owen Cassidy

That's not a bad assumption, that's on you. It's like saying it looks crap with a custom theme, and they should have designed around it.

  • http://katzmatt.com/ Matt Katzenberger

It looks GREAT on phones. Looks alright on tablets, but I wish they'd give each section a full page rather than just showing a list of phone-width cards for each section. It's lazy and it makes the sidebar redundant.

The new app looks nice. The new widgets not so much. I used to have their 4x1 widget on my homescreen. Now the widgets don't have a set size. Resizing them to being readable takes almost the entire screen.

  • marcusmaximus04

From those screenshots, it looks like they're mixing holo dark and holo light though... Would probably look best if they just went all holo light.

they're using a custom theme, that is totally okay and generally preferred.

  • andy_o

Looking good. Just yesterday I started using it as the main weather app in my devices, after the Weather Channel's stupid ass redesign showed me in the front page a thumbnail to a video of people slipping on ice.

FYI: Not sure how long it'll last, but:

Now that's what I call a lot of notifications!

  • twatts723

sorry. after twc update, it smokes this one

  • Dwayne Wilkinson

I just love some of the reviews, priceless

  • JD

Does it put the temperature in the status bar? I like being able to see the temperature all the time with no effort.. For now weather bug does that although I have duplicate notification screen with Google now

  • http://twitter.com/DS1997247 Daniel DS

The whole reason I have had it installed is because of the 4x1 widget, and it's gone now, only 4x2 widgets available :(

  • Andrew Kachaniwsky

Although I like most of what this upgrade brought, the new Holo widgets are horrible. It's impossible to get information from them at a glance, there is too much information and it's all one color with icons that all look the same and don't stand out... poor design in my opinion. Getting much closer to being the only weather app/widget I need!

Are there any pollen counts or maps? Those would factor in big time into the outdoor comfort forecast.
