Archos may not be the biggest dog on the block, but it does do a good job of supporting the hardware it releases. It's currently sending OTA updates to its 80/101 G9 and the 101XD tablets, which mostly just bring some minor bug fixes to the devices.

For the 80/101 G9, build 4.0.28 mostly brings video tweaks, as well as one small touchscreen optimization:

  • HDMI: avoid interference of CEC detected as DPAD with some games such as Max Payne
  • Video: fix playback of some MP4 files
  • Video: fix aspect ratio on some H264 files
  • Touchscreen panel: ensure on some devices a proper wakeup when powering screen back on

The 101XS is being bumped to v4.1.2, which delivers some application enhancements, HDMI playback improvements, and a fix for the Google backup manager:

  • Archos applications: add Archos multimedia server back, update Archos Video, Music, File Manager, GamePad Mapping Tool to be in par with GooglePlay versions.
  • Google backup manager: make it work again
  • HDMI: avoid interference of CEC detected as DPAD with some games such as Max Payne

It's also worth noting that, according to each device's changelog, Archos actually sent these updates out in February of last year. Either that, or someone forgot that 2013 follows 2012. Wink, wink.

I made the mistake of buying a Archos 101 G9. Wasnt worth a crap. Turned around and sold it and put in an extra 40 bucks and got a Asus TF101 which was way better.

I like my 80 G9. Good battery, good screen, good everything for the price. Well happy

Archos products are hit and miss, and their customer service is abysmal. Co-worker got 2 months of use out of his 80 G9 before having to send it back. Took 2 months to get it back, and it had a whooping 10% battery life. Their communication during that period was terrible, including opening a new RMA, and they never notified him the replacement was being shipped - he was gone that weekend...good thing he has nice neighbors!
