Popular (and well-established) music manager/player Winamp got an update today, bringing the app to version 1.4.6 and introducing (among other things) long-awaited notification player controls. The controls match the look and feel of the app they belong to, using a design language that (unfortunately) doesn't look like it's been revisited in a while. That said, they work like a charm, and add much-needed functionality.

Besides that, users will enjoy several bug fixes (primarily involving SHOUTcast and AAC playback), and some streamlined code on the Now Playing screen. In other words, behind-the-scenes stuff.

If you're already loving Winamp and want to get the notification player controls the app has so long been wanting, hit the widget to grab the update. If you're a stranger to Winamp, its music management/sync features alone make it worth checking out.

An app that's stuck in 2004.

Not to reign on Winamp's parade or anything, but PowerAmp has had this for quite a few months...

And PlayerPro, Google Play Music, Apollo and every other music app out there.

PlayerPro uses a Desire in its feature graphics though, which is a major turn off.

      PowerAmp whore!

Once PowerAmp would be free I would compare these two apps. I'm a strange person who'll never pay for music player.

  • Tyler

    Are they even expandable?

    • http://flavors.me/sabret00the sabret00the

      Nope

  • EMullins

I know this app has a free version but my god this is such an ugly, non-compliant, featureless app that rarely gets updated.

Android has a lot of music players but most of them really suck, and this one sucks most of all.

Not new to be honest. I still prefer PowerAmp or PlayerPro anyway.

Please try AIMP3 - it's so much better then WinAmp:http://www.aimp2.us/aimp3-download.php

Ups... Thought you are talking about the desktop version. My bad

Funny thing is that this article reminded me I needed to find a replacement desktop player. So, your post was actually helpful to at least one reader. Cheers!

as much as I love the desktop version, that sure is an ugly player. :-/
is there any other music player that is able to access google music? would love an alternative.

    This is from their description,

"I was so impressed that I set it as my default player and uninstalled the others."

Hey Artem, do you still feel Winamp is the best of the lot?

That line is from 2010, I believe before poweramp, which is my go to player right now, even existed.

      • Pallav

I know, Artem. I'm just messing with you. :)
