If you're going to be getting a phone upgrade in 2013, Best Buy has your number. Or rather, it wants your number. Last year's Phone Freedom promotion is back, and that means you can get a $50 gift card with a new phone purchase just for registering with your email address and phone number before February 9th at 11:59PM.

So here's the deal: hit the Best Buy promo page and sign up with your email and phone number. Once that's done, keep an eye out for the one device that makes your heart sing in 2013 and buy it from Best Buy or Best Buy Mobile (on or after February 10th). As long as you're using the phone number you registered on the promo page, you'll get a $50 gift card for doing almost nothing. There is no commitment or penalty if you don't use your upgrade by December 31, 2013 – you just don't get the gift card.

While a free $50 gift card is nothing to sneeze at, there are a few restrictions. First, you can redeem with Sprint, AT&T, or Verizon phone activations in the store. For T-Mobile devices, you'll have to activate online for some reason. The entire deal is also contingent on signing a new 2-year agreement. You can't get the free money if you're not up for a contract renewal.

Seems like a solid deal, and you can sign up even if you're unsure about buying a phone this year. That way you'll have it just in case.

Sorry but I try my best to avoid Best Buy. That's one ship that's better sunk.

even if you don't buy a phone there, no loss for signing up here. And who knows, maybe there will be a great deal.

Mgamerz comment makes no sense, id like to see his explanation as to why.

And around here, they dont sell tmobile phones in store

Have you ever been to a Best Buy store? Every time I have gone it comprises of: A) People who don't know what they are selling B) People who don't know anything about what's going on and tell you different stories than other employees C) $10/foot HDMI CABLES D) Typically screwing the customer over E) Kills local computer businesses, just like when it came to my city F) Everything is overpriced G) DID I MENTION $10/foot HDMI CABLES?

        A) Im certain this isn't the case for all employed by best buy nation wide B) ?????? C) They are an ailing retail outlet, and need to make their money somehwere D) If a customer can't take the time to do their own research about a large purchase, well, I don't feel any pitty for them E) Brick and mortar electronics businesses are on the way out regardless, the likes of Amazon and Newegg are killing them F) Don't shop there then, I've personally found many deals there on videogames and this phone thing seems pretty dandy G) It isn't that big of a deal.

        • mgamerz

Pretty sure I already addressed F which makes me wonder why you addressed it.

Perhaps you're right. But, if it being overpriced is a deal breaker, this DEAL sounds like what it should be doing to quell those complaints.

I prefer Amazon phones anyways (though now I'm a nexus user so I guess it's play store). One call and bam, it's setup. No hassle!

You know they price match amazon and Newegg among others now, right? Screw waiting for shipping.

Anyone know if this multiplies for each phone/number you have on a family plan or is it a one per plan type of deal?

I used the promo last year and saved $50 off the best price I could get for my droid 4. They also let me apply it towards the phone purchase.
