If the success of the Torchlight series has taught us anything, it's that dungeon crawlers are far from obsolete. The latest Android entry in the storied genre is Dungeon Quest, a solid loot-fest that's still in beta. Though there's only one class (mage,) the randomized levels and equipment should please  click-happy Diablo fans all over. 100 levels and 5 difficulty settings should will keep things interesting, and the happy-go-lucky graphics don't hurt, either.

Like Torchlight, the game uses a simple health and mana system. Equipment can be upgraded via enchanting, and there's also a Dungeons & Dragons-inspired rerolling system. So maybe you want your staff to do more damage, and don't mind a decreased range - reroll until you get it. The actual gameplay is pretty solid, too: simple controls allow you to apply a weapon and modifier (like a transport orb) to mix things up. The simple loot collection, which grabs both gold and items as you walk by them, makes getting the maximum amount of goodies easy.

Dungeon Quest is free to play, and relies on in-app purchases of game currency. That being said, there are enough in-game drops that you don't feel forced, and the cost for Google Play IAPs is more than reasonable. Impressively, even the cheapest one dollar purchase will remove The few ads in the game. If you've been itching for a solid dungeon crawler, Dungeon quest might just scratch it.

Oh yeah, another freemium game that cost 5000 hours of grinding or 500€ to have all the items

    next

    • ShinyDev

This is hardly a freemium game, there's no insane playtime or iap requirement to get gear, you can get awesome gear right away. It's just meant to be a quick and fun arpg for mobile.

      • mimi

        glad to hear that dev,
        I'll give it a try

      • melody

        dev you're lying.
I've tried the game, the adventure part is easy, lots of coins, generous equipment, level up quickly. good overall.

but the BOSS part is crazy.
Even the first boss has ridiculously high HP, even when I use 'EFFECTIVE' weapon type, I only able to reduce half of boss hp after 5 minutes. that's use more than 10 potion, my money emptied from 4000 to 1000 just to buy potion which one is priced 250, rather costly.

And the worst cheating part is, when I died, then restart the BOSS fight again, my spent money didn't come back. lol lol lol. It's clearly cheating dev, forcing people to buy coins with IAP.

Sorry I have no choice but to give 1 star review in google play >_<

No lies here, I promise you that 1000's of players have gotten past the first boss with no IAP :)

I know it might be a hard fight, so a few tips:

Always been shooting at the boss, even when you run out of mana your shots are still doing decent damage.

Between phases if the mobs get too much run to the sides of the arena to take care of them, away from the range of the poison shots.

Make sure not to get hit either :P

All that said, we are looking for feedback on fights and will take into consideration the challenge of the boss you mentioned, and may make adjustments :)

        • Cheeseball

Then you're obviously doing something wrong. Run away from the poison darts and you should be able to survive. No IAP purchase here.

        • Southrncomfortjm

The first boss is laughably easy if you think about it for a moment. I got myself a "seeking" weapon/orb combo and stood outside the range of the poison gas. He did have a lot of HP, but I'm pretty sure I only used 2 mana pots and took minimal damage. It's a *BOSS*, you can't expect to stand toe to toe with it and not get hurt. And yeah, its a game where you may have to do some grinding - I redid floor 5 a few times, earned a ton of money and gained a few levels and had a lot of fun doing it. I guess my 4 star rating will have to balance off your rage-induced 1. I give it 4 stars because the game is still clearly beta-level and there are a few glitches that need to be cleared up. Also really hope to see more classes in the future. Got to give the (hard working) devs something to work for! :)

"Old school" WTF? Since when is a Diablo-clone "old school"?

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Diablo game out 17 years ago. At this point calling it old school sounds pretty fair.

      Damn, we are old.

      • grinmaster

        I am old.
        not sure about you :D

        jk
no we are not old. I'm sure most of us are still under 50.. :)

  • defred34

Hard to believe you're featuring this POS game. Played it last week and it is REALLY weak. Android Police has been losing the plot lately. Money might be a more than integral factor in that.

    • ShinyDev

Any feedback to make the game less weak would be greatly appreciated. :)

      • Southrncomfortjm

Barbarian class! Also, fix the bug where gold/items can land inside a wall so I can't get to them. Too many piles of gold land *just* out of reach.

        • ShinyDev

A warrior/barb type class is definitely next ( we're working on it as we speak ). Will get that loot out of the walls for you as well!

          • Southrncomfortjm

Oh yeah, forgot the biggest thing: cloud saves/backups. I would gladly pay a small IAP to be able to save my wizard to the cloud to use between my phone and tablet. This would be huge!

          • ShinyDev

That's something we'll be addressing after full release in a few months for sure, and will probably have to be attached to some sort of account system. Will very likely be free though ;)

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

You didn't like it, so clearly

      a) all the people who do like it, showing it with their reviews must be trolling
      b) AP is "losing the plot"
      c) it's cool to accuse us of being unethical. I get it, it's easy and fun to start conspiracy theories and seeing what happens. But you personally have been getting on my nerves since day 1, and will probably eventually end with a ban.

And just so we are clear, we don't do paid reviews, we don't feature games or apps in exchange for a fee unless explicitly stated that a post is sponsored.

      • John Jones

You're forgetting the first rule of the interwebs Artem: don't feed the trolls.

      • jeffrey beck

Artem, you are awesome. Thanks for making AP my one stop source of all Android Goodness.

  • Wayne Randall

Hey, co-op over WiFi, call me! Love you!

    • ShinyDev

Would love to, just takes time!

      • Wayne Randall

Sweet. Grab some BBQ chips on your way over. And not the store brand either, Humpty Dumpty or gtfo.

    • Matti

You buy me big sword, me love you long time~ ;-P

  • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

We get it, some don't like IAPs and freemium. And you ask to be told when games contain them. When we do, though, it doesn't seem to matter. It's obviously a pretty well done game, with a 4+ rating, it's not for everyone, but freemium is here to stay, and we will cover good games that come out no matter what style (though, of course, noting down things like that on the coverage).

    • defred34

I sincerely apologize mate. Hope there's no bad blood between us.

this looks so stolen from dungeon defenders.

  • Saryon

Despite all the trolls in the thread so far I admire the fact that the device is actively posting! I think I'll give this a try.

    • ShinyDev

Glad to hear :) We'll be sticking around too so if you can think of something you'd like to see, let us know!

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

      "the device"

      Ha.

  • http://twitter.com/TeamAndIRC Justin Case

While I'm not a gamer, I'm going to give it a whirl, freemium or not. Just seeing the dev here responding like a pro is an encouraging sign!

    • ShinyDev

Very cool, let me know how you like it!

  • GAIAStevef

Not sure how much you can actually classify this as a "Dungeon Crawler"... It's certainly not in the same category as something like "Eye of the Beholder", or "Ultima Underworld".

The true Old School dungeon games were as much about resource management as about exploring and combat. Recently they all seem to be split between the Co-Op slash-fest, or the run through as fast as you can & grab the loot (or part with it in the case of everything becoming IAP's)

I'd love to see something like Legend of Grimrock, EotB, or Dungeon Master make the transition to a tablet format.

  • http://twitter.com/ElimentalD Ed Limental

1st it almost looks like Pocket RPG, almost. I still love that game.

For the dev, one quick question, Xperia Play or PS3 controller support?

    • ShinyDev

The mapping for Xperia wasn't being friendly to us, we'll have to look into it more. While we're at it we'll look at PS3 controller as well. Also, if you dig controller play, we should have an Ouya version out sometime in March. :)

      • http://twitter.com/ElimentalD Ed Limental

Cool, so tablet install it is. My large fingers in on screen controls just do not work for me on phones. Thanks for the quick response, hell it makes me wanna buy something in game just to support you.

        • ShinyDev

Glad to help :) Small devices are tough to get controls right, as v-pad is almost always inferior to an actual controller. We'll be throwing in a few more control schemes hopefully soon which should at least give the option to play how you like.

          • Alex

If you add PS3 controller support, that will be cool!

          • Jongjungbu

MOGA support would be awesome too.

  • jumb

    I've had a crack at it - It's amazing!

On Nexus 10 there's some graphical abnormalities, but apart from that it behaves well.

    • ShinyDev

We've found the reason why and have put out an update for it. Those Nexus 10's are pretty slick!

  • Sqube

I don't mind freemium. But I see that you need to identify items. I've played freemium games where you basically wouldn't be able to identify more than one item a day unless you paid money. For a loot-oriented game, that's just... wrong.

I'll give this one a try. If that's what it does, it's beyond the pale and I'll review it accordingly. Thanks for making me aware of it, though! Looks fun.
