Chrome Beta

It's about time. The Beta channel of Chrome's release is now available on Android, though like its more stable brother, it won't be getting all the bells and whistles from the desktop version. You don't need any special access for the beta build, and it can be installed over your default browser or the stable version of Chrome.

--

Welcome to Chrome Beta for Android! Preview the latest features: Try out the newest features. (Sometimes these may be a little rough around the edges.) Give early feedback: Let us know what you think and help make Chrome for Android a better browser. You can install Chrome Beta alongside your current version of Chrome for Android. Chrome Beta will request additional permissions when using Chrome Sync for the first time.

Tapatalk HD

Android Police coverage: Tapatalk HD Leaves Beta, Is On One-Day Only Sale For $0.99 In The Play Store

You know Tapatalk, if only from the annoying pop-ups from forums around the web. Their long-awaited tablet version is available now, but unfortunately, those of you who've bought the smartphone version will still have to pony up. At least it's got a full Holo interface, with multiple columns for true tablet functionality.

--

  • New - Push Notification - instant notification of subscribed topics, private messages, likes received, mentioned, and more.
  • Portrait and Landscape view optimized

Winulator

Android Police coverage: A Way To Play Starcraft On Android That Isn't Embarrassingly Bad - With Full Touch Controls - Is On The Way (Video)

Look, this is complicated. It's like an emulator, but not exactly. It's running parts of Windows on your Android device, but not the most important or recognizable parts, and even then, it's running code that's more than a decade old. But here's the important bit: you can play (some) ancient DirectX games on (some) Android devices. Let the cries of adulation commence!

--

Winulator lets you run some old Windows programs and games on your Android devices. The aim is late 90's old DirectX-based games. Support for popular titles is added gradually by the developer after testing. See website for more details about supported programs. You can configure widgets for control - these widgets map to virtual keyboard keys, right click, zoom, etc. Mostly suitable for tablets, but runs on small devices as well.

Zime (BETA) | To-do + Calendar

Android Police coverage: [New App] Zime Is A Stylish 3D To-Do Manager And Calendar App

It's hard to make a calendar look interesting, but Zime manages to so so. With a whiz-bang interface and all the standard bells and whistles, it's a shoe-in for the best-looking calendar on the platform. There's also a task (read: to do) function, which allows for syncing across platforms. Right now it's in beta, so some hardware (including the Samsung Galaxy S III and Note II) may have trouble.

--

Android Police coverage: Facebook Silently Releases Pages Manager For Android, But You Probably Won't Be Able To Install It Yet

This is the Facebook Pages Manager. It lets you manage your Facebook Pages from your Android device. Simple, huh? The early problems with compatibility have been addressed by now, and all of the 20-odd devices in my Google Play Store list show as compatible. Have at it, social gurus.

LagFix (fstrim)

Lag is a constant complaint for Android users, even on the most powerful hardware. The folks behind LagFix think they've found one of the primary causes, especially in older versions of the OS: a buildup of data on the internal storage in some kernels. This root-only app claims to fix it - your mileage may vary.

--

Some Android users suffer from poor performance after some days/weeks of heavy usage. This is due to a well-known TRIM bug affecting these devices (users report Nexus devices and HTC One devices are affected). Kernels with -discard mount option are NOT affected. The source of the problem is that internal storage is not properly TRIMmed when needed. You can find lots of information on XDA - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1971852 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1929021 It is also well-known fact that running fstrim Linux tool from time to time fixes the issue until internal memory runs out of free blocks. Other solutions like mounting with -discard or disabling fsync may be slow or dangerous.

Reddit Now

Yup, another Reddit app - we know you folks can't get enough of them. Reddit Now has all the basic functions wrapped up in an impressive Holo interface, because a certain subreddit demands it. The UI uses side-swipes to navigate the various panels, not unlike switching tabs in Chrome. It's in beta for the moment, so consider it somewhat unfinished.

--

Reddit Now is a great way to browse content published on Reddit, a popular social news and entertainment website, using your Android device. Featuring a unique Holo-styled sliding interface Reddit Now aims to provide you with an intuitive, gesture based, Reddit experience.

What does Reddit Now offer?

  • Designed for phones and tablets
  • Gesture based (bezel swipe) Holo interface

GymPact - Reward your workout

Believe it or don't, this isn't the first time someone has put hard-earned cash on the line to help motivate new years' resolutions. But it is the one with the best mobile app. Gympact works like this: you put down a small amount of money, and earn it back by reaching your fitness goals, including going to the gym. You can even win prizes for doing well. Skip out on the gym, and your money's gone... to the people who kept their goals.

--

Fitsby: Workout Wars

Speaking of gym motivation, Fitsby takes a different tack: motivating you with friends instead of money. And also money. Fitsby takes the slight gambling aspects of fantasy sports and translates them into Fousquare-style gym checkins, with cash on the line. You can play with your friends on Facebook or Twitter.

--

Need gym motivation? Try Fitsby. Challenge your friends and compete with them in a game of gym check-ins. Bet money or play for fun. The top gym goers of a game are the winners and split the money from their friends who didn't work out as much as they did. Fitsby uses your smartphone's GPS to verify that you are at a gym and also requires that you work out a minimum of 30 minutes before you can successfully check out.

Fitocracy

Android Police coverage: [New App] Fitocracy Makes Its Way To Android, Puts A Little RPG In Your Workout Routine

Need even more motivation? Then play with yourself (figuratively speaking, of course) with Fitocracy. This iOS hit turns exercise into a real-life RPG, where you level up, complete missions, and the like. Who knew that a set of squats would ever have anything in common with Dungeons and Dragons? Naturally, social elements are included for those who want them.

--

Fitocracy for Android is finally here. Level up and become more awesome.

HOW IT WORKS:
1. Track workouts to earn points and level up. Complete Quests for bonus points. Earn badges by reaching milestones.
2. Make friends with other Fitocrats. Follow them, give them props, and leave comments. The more social you are, the more motivated and educated you'll become.
3. Become more awesome.

Simple

Android Police coverage: Online Bank 'Simple' Finally Releases Its Android App, And Man Is It Pretty

Bank of America, eat your heart out. Simple is an invite-only online bank, and while the Android app is a little behind its iOS counterpart, the extra effort in the development shows with a gorgeous Holo UI. --

GoBank

Android Police coverage: Green Dot Announces 'GoBank', An Online-Only, Smartphone-Centric Take On The Traditional Banking System

Oh, and Green Dot has pretty much the same thing. The interface isn't quite as appealing as Simple. It's still good, but unfortunately, it's also invite-only.

--

Note: You must already have a GoBank™ account to use this app. GoBank is a new kind of checking account. It’s a checking account born on an mobile phone (instead of a covered wagon), with no overdraft or penalty fees. It’s about time. You can completely manage your GoBank account from the Android app. If you don’t feel like it, you’ll never have to visit GoBank.com. This is the beauty of a fully mobile bank. Seriously. GoBank has no surprise fees. In fact, potential fees are so easy to navigate, they could fit on a single tweet. Check out it out at GoBank.com/NoWorries to see what we mean.

AppFeed.net (beta)

Android Police coverage: AppFeed.net Releases Beta App Into The Play Store

Psst: here's a secret. We use AppFeed.net just about every day to find information on new and updated apps. If you'd rather do it for yourself, you can set up your own account, or just get the mobile app to see the latest and greatest on the Play Store.

--

AppFeed.net is an online website and service that monitors android market apps and games that are added to the users list and notifies them by an RSS/ATOM feed when those apps are updated, such as when there is a new version or when the price changes (increase or decrease). This app is mobile client for the AppFeed.net website, were you can view, add and remove apps from your tracking list, directly from your Android device.

Tile Launcher Beta

Android Police coverage: Tile Launcher Beta Makes Your Android Homescreen Feel A Little More Windows Phone-y

You've looked at Windows Phone. It's OK to admit it - it won't make you any less of an Android guy. Why not take a little inspiration from the admittedly nifty tile interface in WP7/WP8 with Tile Launcher, which arranges your current shortcuts and widgets in the same visual style? You can keep your normal layout, with just a little more boxy flair.

--

Smooth, multidirectional, widget-compatible tile-based launcher for Android 4.0+. Please keep in mind this is a BETA release.

Features

  • Based on stock Jellybean 4.2 Launcher
  • Optimized scrolling
  • Completely customize any tile and defaults for new tiles
  • Shortcut/widget settings - title, text color, background color, images, transparency

QM Launcher

Remember that bit from the end of Jurassic Park, where the girl uses a "UNIX system" with an incredibly stupid 3D interface just to lock the doors? This is the Android launcher equivalent. Or, as some of the Linux customization types might say: SPINING CUBES!

--

The QM Launcher is an exciting new home screen, app launcher, and content organizer for your Android phone or tablet. “QM” stands for Quantum Matrix, a patented technology designed to store, manage, and quickly access all of your apps, photos, music, documents, and more. Check out our website for all the features, especially the User Guide under the Support page. The QM Launcher eliminates the 2D panning and scrolling that is typical of panel-based launchers and home screens on the market today, and optimizes the use of your precious screen space. With the QM Launcher, you can organize an unlimited number of apps in an easy-to-use 3D cube. We call it the “Matrix”. By simply rotating the Matrix, you have immediate access to dozens of your favorite apps and multimedia content.

Android Police coverage: [New Game] Ubisoft's Far Cry 3 Outpost Lets You Decode On The Go For In-Game Bonuses

The latest in the growing field of gaming augmentation apps is the Far Cry 3 Outpost, which lets you perform the standard FPS actions of equipping your multiplayer character while out and about in the real world. But for FC3, you also get to decode in-game flash drives while on the go, possibly unlocking valuable upgrades and modifications. There's also a social tie-in to the map editor.

--

Join your friends and get ahead in the game with the Far Cry® 3 mobile app for multiplayer and co-op. Earn advanced weapon mods for your favorite guns and customize your loadouts on the go. The next time you jump into a multiplayer match or co-op chapter, you’ll be ready to play.

Umano: News Read to You

Android Police coverage: [New App] Umano Is An App That Has Real People Read The News To You

There's something so impersonal about textual communication. If you long for the glory days of Orson Welles, try Umano, which has real people record news stories for your enjoyment. There's also the compulsory social sharing features, because you can't pretend you're in a bygone pre-internet era for more than five minutes at a time.

--

The widely acclaimed, ★★★★★, #1 New and Noteworthy iOS app is now available on Android. With Umano you will hear real people with amazing voices read interesting news articles to you.

GrooveGrid

GrooveGrid won't make you into a DJ, but it might fool you into thinking you are. A handful of musical samples arranged in an easy interface will let you create some basic mixes to show off to your friends. Want more tracks? Prepare to whip out your digital wallet for some in-app purchases.

--

GrooveGrid - A band at your fingertips

  • No musical knowledge required. With GrooveGrid the output will always sound right. No matter how you combine the instruments.

  • The interactive track "ignition." is included for free.
  • Additional tracks are available in Google play.

DRAWNETIC – KINETIC DRAWING

Need a way to show off your Galaxy Note? Then Drawnetic is for you. This isn't really a traditional drawing application: instead of dragging a digital paintbrush across a canvas, you more or less fling your brush around the screen and let it keep going. With a lot of options, there are a lot of different combinations you can make. Naturally, you can share your creations on the social network of your choice.

--

Bring your sketches to life. Drawnetic is a drawing app that turns your sketches into dynamic animations. Using generative systems, it analyzes your unique touch gestures, then transforms the simplest of sketches into simply amazing works of art. Please note that although the app works with most Android devices, it was specifically written and tested for the Samsung Galaxy Note/Note II/Tab/S III.

Blip TV

YouTube is so 2009. Blip.TV is where all the cool web series are hosted... or at least those that can't afford their own little corner of the web. Since Blip still serves its videos via Flash, the mobile app lets you get the latest Chris Pirillo blog entry on the go. The initial release has a few stability issues, according to the Play Store reviews.

--

Discover the best in original web series. Blip lets you discover, watch and share the best in original web series. Get your Blip entertainment fix from our hand-picked dramas, comedies, arts, sports and other series.

Blockbuster

The new Blockbuster app has been rebuilt from the ground up, hopefully to be less terrible. Not to be confused with the streaming video app (you know, the one that was permanently installed on all those Verizon phones) this manages your Blockbuster mail queue and shows you which movies and games are available at local stores, as well as being your Blockbuster card.

--

New releases? Popular games? Family movies? Blockbuster HAS it. And now you can access all of it with the tap of a finger from your Android device.

•Rent the hottest movies and games, delivered to your door
•Browse the Blockbuster catalogue of more than 100,000 titles
•Manage your Blockbuster By Mail queue
•Find store locations, and check availability of titles in-store
•Scan and store your member card for use at checkout at a Blockbuster store

The Blockbuster app made me smile in a sad way as they've gone into administration

  • mechapathy

So Ctrl+C duplicates the 4.2 "Copy to Clipboard" function? Or am I missing something. Cuz that's a nice feature.

    • NeoLawliet

      It's not a 4.2 feature -- it's courtesy of Google Drive, I think.

      • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

That is correct. And yeah, Ctrl-C adds history which is a big plus.

    • Aux MHz

Copy To Clipboard comes from Drive app. Drive's implementation does not have any options (personally, I don't need share subjects most of the time, why to bother?) and does not have history (found it useful too).

So, you have a choise what to use - the true beauty of Android!

  • http://silverfang77.tumblr.com/ Silver Fang

That QM Launcher looks pretty cool.

  • Tiffany Sears

I have the Facebook Page Manager and it works well. No problems installing

  • Sootie

Way to english whoever wrote the description for the ubuntu wallpaper

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

In the new site design, I'm going to make sure app descriptions are clearly separated from our own content, so there's no confusion between who wrote what.

  • Dor “The Configurator” Kleiman

I don't get the Tapatalk app. You basically pay money to get the same thing you get from the website in question for free. Why do that?

    • MACoBe

It's useful if you are active on many forums or communities. For the casual user, who checks the forums once a day a few minutes it's a waste of money. For the user that haves active discussions about developing, programing or another hot topics in many different forums at the same time, it totally worths it to have the notifications and all the forums at one touch. :-)

      • Dor “The Configurator” Kleiman

That pretty much explains it, thanks.

        • iampoch

What I don't get is why I have to pay for two apps that are essentially the same. I have the phone version, but have to pay for a tablet version? That's just wrong.

          • Fábio Duarte

If only it worked with Android...
It fails to notify many threads and PMs are pretty much a no go.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100005068416015 Neo Haming

If you have a lot of musics and videos on you PC or NAS - that I would definately recommed you ArkMC application. It allows you to watch it on you tablet without any need to copy it!

  • Sxeptomaniac

I have to admit, that Brian Blessed alarm clock is pretty awesome-looking. He's got one of those voices that's really hard not to appreciate. To really see the guy in his Shakespearean Glory, check him out in Henry V.

  • TomasHunter

Thanks for psting this great list of apps, Jeremiah! Last week we had an employee raffle in the DISH call center where I work, and I won a new Galaxy Note 2. It is my first smart phone, so these app suggestions are a huge help; I will definitely be spending a few hours with this list. I also wanted to recommend the very first app that I downloaded; it’s called DISH Remote Access, and I use it to control my DVR while away from home. However, my favorite feature is its ability to stream live TV or DVR recordings to my phone over my wireless network or through WIFI. I’m still finding new places to watch TV, but a recent trip to the DMV was a great first test run.

  • http://twitter.com/SanyaBel Alexander Belonogov

Hey, guys! Look what I've found. This app is so awesome! Check this video:
