Forget skeuomorphism. Why do we need things that look like objects if we can just use actual objects? That's what reddit user and notable George Bruns ballad davy_crockett thought. Using a combination of Apex launcher's ability to resize the icon grid and MultiPicture Live Wallpaper to use multiple photos for different homescreens, he created a layout that's made up entirely of real-world things. Want to play music? Tap the headphones. Need the clock? Hit the watch! It's that simple.

The neat thing about this concept, though, is that if you want to do it yourself, there are virtually no limits to how much your homescreens can differ from this one. While this isn't the first time someone has used photos to create a custom layout, it's certainly one of the neatest and easiest. Try it out for yourself!

Homescreens like these always make me go "Wow" for a moment. Then I return to reality and realize that A.) I don't have the time, artistic sense, or patience to make something like this, and B.) I still really like my buttons to look like buttons at the end of the day. Stuff like this never looks like it's meant to be part of a touch-based UI.

think of it like a really easy hidden-object game :)

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Same here, I don't have the patience for the most part (creativity and artistic sense aren't needed if you are replicating something like this that someone else has done). But I just can't bring myself to keep it updated or set it up on new devices. It just takes way too much time, and the only person who's going to enjoy it is probably just me (foreveralone.jpg).

Gah, I was just thinking about how much work it would be to do your own weather widget. Every couple of hours you'd need to update the photo.

The beauty of Nova launchers backup feature would come into play there, so long as the devices didn't have different resolutions it wouldn't be any issue to transfer homescreens! I used it to get my custom setup back after many a new ROM flash.

        • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Yeah, but it's not just the homescreen a lot of the times - in fact, most of the time a combination of several apps play together to create something this awesome. And device resolutions definitely come into play. And finally, I just don't care enough :P

    holo >>>>> skeu... every time

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ David Ruddock

      This isn't skeuomoprhism, though.

      • woj_tek

nevertheless - it tries to mimic 'real world'... it's not functional nor handy...

        • asianrage

IMHO, you're over reaching a bit. Skeuomorphism implies recreation of a real world object and tactile feel, and there's not a sense of mimicry about having PNGs of actual items.

I love the Holo UI, but the actual iconographic assets could be better designed.

P.S. Obligatory "Can your iPhone do this?" comment.

reddit and AP are becoming the singularity.....

  • GraveUypo

yeah, i guess you and i differ vastly on our definition of beautiful.

  • garunkel

Creative, but I personally think it looks really ugly :

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/author/eric-ravenscraft/ Eric Ravenscraft

Well, you could take better pictures, then! That's what's so cool about this. :)

I think what kills it is the dock at the bottom. And the notification bar, to some extent. Fortunately Apex can be set up to hide both. Also, the dock could be themed to look like a bookshelf or a drawer.

Overall its a nice idea, but the implementation could be improved.

Funny enough - I did the exact same thing over a decade ago on my PC the using Stardock's Object Desktop. But now my desktop doesn't even contain a single icon - in fact you could say that I don't even have a desktop lol. Ah, how times change.

  • spydie

someone needs to make an app for the rest of us!

  • asianrage

I like the idea. But it's not for me, until I find another way to make it meaningful to me.

BTW, just getting a bit off-topic here, but those MotoBlur icons are ugly.

  • atlouiedog

Not my style, but if I did it I'd use something like UCCW to make the watch face actually show me the time. The hard part would get it to not look horribly out of place with the photo.

  • smeddy

I had a rant with someone on PocketNow about this, who was saying: "Android and iPhone are so boring and ugly. Widgets and icons" (he was defending WP7's tile approach).

Its why I love Android so much - the flexibility to make your homepage exactly as you wish it. I've had some stunning ones in the past, with my battery life depleting purely because I was so enamoured at staring at my screen.

And in a way, that's a metaphor for Android itself: It's like how Windows 95 felt at the time - where you could make your PC do 'anything' you wanted. Extensibility is the biggest factor for me in deciding on my OS.

  • Jay R

So the name of the APP is called???

    • http://twitter.com/sixesNsevens Nick LaVeaux

Perhaps if you took the time to read... you would see that it is made by a combination of two things. It is made with Apex launcher and with MultiPicture Live Wallpaper.

      • William Peterson

@Nick LaVeaux that would require opening the link then reading. Something that seems to be a thing of the past, I guess.

help me, I feel the urge ......, no cannot resist....... end result a kitty based UI!
