U.S. Tab 2 owners, your time has finally come: the Android 4.1.1 update is officially making its rounds. The 311MB update – which has been available on the UK Tab 2 for a couple of months now – recently showed up on the Wi-Fi model (GT-P5113) here in the U.S. via both OTA and Kies.

Update: Looks like the Tab 2 10.1's little brother – the Tab 2 7.0 (P3113) – is getting the update as well, also through OTA and Kies.

Of course, there's no changelog available at this point, but we all know what to expect from Jelly Bean: Google Now, Project Butter, improved performance, enhanced notifications, and more. You can see if the update is available on your device by heading into Settings > About device > Software update; otherwise, you can plug it into your PC via USB and launch Kies, which should prompt the update.

Thanks, Ray!

It seems Samsung has started to push Jelly Bean to their devices, and their are pushing it quicker and quicker to different devices. I hope the Ace Plus (S7500) will be soon. :)

    • QuanahHarjo

I'm hoping the Tab 2's older brother the Tab Plus is near. Centering the controls will be welcome...I'm tired of hitting the clock when I'm typing :P

Updates are generally nice. I hate the new patronising high audio warning whenever you are above 70% volume with earphones plugged in. I control volume in the cord, so its not loud at all! Smells like samsung covering their behind, or is this google?

    • jammer

Samsung does all kinds of weird things. I hated that they would keep reminding me that I can connect to Wi-Fi when I didn't want to.

    • CodeMonkey

Blame the congenitally stupid and the lawyers who serve them. There used to be similar warnings on my Archos Gmini XS 200 MP3 player in 2004.
They get everyone in the end.

I got this update on Monday, January 7. It's OK overall and I love that Samsung kept the true tablet UI rather than going with the oversized-phone Nexus UI.

But they had to screw up something in the process and this time the key victim was auto-rotation, or rather the support for disabling such an annoying feature. Now even if you have disabled auto-rotation, the Lock screen and the YouTube video screens still auto-rotate. FFFFUUUUUUU!

    • spacekobra

Realy? On my Dad's tab 2 7 all the buttons became centered.

      • CeluGeek

The 10.1 model retained the tablet UI. I even reset my tablet after trying out the update for a while, so I could start with fresh Jelly Bean and not risk "Jelly Ice Cream Bean Sandwich" and even after the reset it still has the good ole tablet UI.

        • spacekobra

Good on Samsung then, I think the tablet UI is better for, well, large tablets.

          • Matthew Merrick

yeah, but it'll be gone come 4.2

    • Jorge Davis

Grow Up... Sounds like you always have to complain about something? Fffffuuuu because the screen rotates, come on...

Still waiting for my Note 10.1 to get Jelly Bean

I had the update on my tab for 3 days now.... Prefer the previous firmware much more.

  • spydie

came out days ago on the tab 2 7... lost some features like screen capture button, and now the notification bar is at the top like a phone instead of the bottom-right corner like a tablet. I hate the changes.

    • CeluGeek

Hold down POWER and VOLUME DOWN buttons to capture the screen. Works in more screens (lock screen, full screen video) than the icon on the button bar and is less annoying because you don't get to press it by accident as often, if at all.

When it first updated, I was frightened I wouldn't like those changes. But the new features and especially the truly fascinating increase in performance outdo any disadvantage.

  • kyle

everytime i turn to a different page on my homescreen...a ladies voice says, "page 3 of 5" etc...how do i fix this cus its soo annoying..please helppppp meee

  • Nana Kay

Where is screen capture, ability to change keyboards, etc. Who said this is an improvement? Although I do like being able to see mord emoji on social sites.

    • CeluGeek

  • Reality Based Media

I just downloaded the jelly bean update to my Samsung Galaxy tab 2 10.1 and I absolutely love it. I love the cards from Google search. Now if I could just find a way 2 uninstall Google Plus I would be a happy camper

  • Andrew

Ref screen capture...go to settings. Display. Quick launch

    • http://www.facebook.com/smhseto Shawna Huhn Seto

There is no quick launch option anymore... it's gone with the update

  • Lianna

This display is stupid. I have several problems. 1) the majority of time I'm in landscape mode, and I'm also a lefty. Now with this new update everything is in the middle where I have stretch my fingers to get to the back button. Everything used to be on the left side bottom of the screen. 2) You have everything ALL AROUND THE TABLET! I have navigation on the bottom, apps that stay whatever the screen you are in on the left, task bar and date/time/battery on the top, and trash on the right side. Too much damn smudges! Everything used to be on the bottom and most convenient. 3) Every time I'm in an app and go to close it the stupid top flickers. 4) Whose idea was it to hide the google search? It used to be on every screen. 5) Nothing is in the middle and all the screens are lump-sided to the left because they have at least an inch of space used by things I don't need. Finally 6) WHERE THE HECK IS MY SCREEN CAPTURE? I admit, at first I was perplexed by its purpose, but I actually came to rely on the it, especially during finals week and taking pictures of the answers to my online tests.

If you are going to change something fine, but did you have to mess with the display? You should make it where owners can put all the items I mentioned above where it suits their own convenience, not Samsungs. As for this being the same as the phone, you have to understand that the phone is only 3 x 2 inches is the phone I had (Dart) so it was appropriate for something that small. I hate it and along with my OCD, I can't stand to look at it because its crooked.

    • Swami

I completely agree with you Lianna... I am also fed up with the update. After the update t JB (which I did two days ago) I am spending all my time in search of, how to revert back to ICS.

  • malanc

I'm not feeling the lost of the easy screenshot and still want the ability to move my apps to a memory card without having to root my device
I thought it would have a better keyboard too...

  • lolagurl

Screw all the unneccessaries that came with the lastest update. I chose this tablet over an ipad because I was told I could use flash... can we get an update for that please!!!!!!!!!!!

  • korg60

after the update, I can no longer
power off my tablet. Power button just reboots system after you give the OK to shut down.
