Wireless charging is awesome, but wireless chargers blow. They are so finicky. I have a Nexus 4 and an LG wireless charger, so I know all about this first hand: Take your wireless charging phone, put it on your wireless charger, and it charges, right? Well, only sometimes. The charging coil in the phone and in the charger need to be lined up just right for the power flow to happen. Move the phone 1 mm off center and it stops charging, bump the table it's on and it stops charging, breathe on it funny, and it stops charging.

7YL7 TYLT solves this pretty simply with a charge they call the "TYLT Vu." It has multiple charging coils in the charger, so there really is nothing to line up with. Just throw it on the charger and you're done. It will even work if your phone is sideways or upside down, as you can see in the pictures. It's a reliable wireless charger.

It uses the Qi wireless charging standard, so it should work for a Nexus 4, Droid DNA, LG Spectrum 2, and many others.

Sadly, there's no word on pricing or availability yet. Like most things at CES, all we could get out of them was "coming soon." I want one.

Ron loves everything related to technology, design, and Google. He always wants to talk about "the big picture" and what's next for Android, and he's not afraid to get knee-deep in an APK for some details. Expect a good eye for detail, lots of research, and some lamenting about how something isn't designed well enough.

    Pretty kewl..

Visually, I think I like the design of Google's "orb" better, but if these can hit a competitive price point I'd be interested in buying one. The multiple coils is a huge win compared to current chargers.

    I want two.

I'll be surprised if we ever see these in brick and mortar stores....

When I got my Nexus 4, I went in search to purchase a local, cheap Qi charging pad - mainly to play with for a few days then forget about. I looked at several places in our mall, Best Buy, Radio Shack, cell phone retailers, Walmart, Target, you name it. Not a single place sells a single wireless charger of any kind around here anymore. A couple years ago when they were new you could find them at a damned grocery store, now there's NOTHING unless you buy it online.

This happened to me too. The supply never had any demand just until nearly every company ended production.

I blame Powermat. They did a great job of shoving their product onto every store shelf and managed to ruin wireless charging for everybody.

  • Ben Baranovsky

I will also take one of these. For now though, I found the Zens wireless charger with multiple coils at Android Central's store.

I'm so confused with all these wireless chargers, can I use one of these to charge my S3 without a giant bulky and ugly custom back cover?

    • http://www.facebook.com/JoelBA Joel Anderson

You can! All you need is a very thin qi enabled insert that fits inside your stock back cover. Observe: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKdNCiShlY0

That's awesome cheers for the info.

The spokesperson at the CES Show Tylt booth said they are selling them now http://shop.tylt.com/pc_combined_results.asp?tab=product&search_prod=(searchlike~p.sku~wireless%20charger|Or|searchlike~p.nm~wireless%20charger|Or|searchlike~p.ds~wireless%20charger)&search_keyword=wireless%20charger&make=&model= or qigadgets.com

        $70? Ugh.

        • http://codytoombs.wordpress.com/ Cody Toombs

I won't mind it so much if they sell through Amazon or some other site where I've got a stack of credit.

To the credit of the charger, since it's less particular about placement, it should work with more devices than semi-custom chargers like the (supposed) Nexus 4 dock or the docks that seem to only work with one or two models. That makes the price a lot easier to swallow.

My one objection is that it looks like this thing can't fold up. It's obviously easy to design it to fold and I'd love to be able to set this up on the table next to the bed in hotel rooms.

Since it's not going to be on sale until April, I suspect somebody else will jump in and manufacture a better design and might even squeeze the price down a bit.

      • http://codytoombs.wordpress.com/ Cody Toombs

Not exactly selling them yet, those are pre-orders for April 1st, 2013. Is that a coincidence, it just happens to land on April Fool's?
