SwiftKey Flow Beta, which came out just a month ago, has received its first major update since release. Version 4.0.0.61 brings some significant changes, along with a massive changelog (well, it's a things-to-be-aware-of / known issues log, too). More important to you, though, is probably where and how to download it. Here's the smartphone version, and here's the tablet version. Now, for the log:

SwiftKey Flow Beta 4.0.0.61 changelog

  • Flow-through-space autocommit: if you flow-through space but mess up your last word, all the prior words will be inserted (instead of losing all the words)
  • Flow in landscape on tablets (not on split layout with numpad)
  • Battery usage improved (when flowing and when not in use)
  • Performance of flowing and tapping improved
  • Longpress of bottom-right (smiley/enter) button now works
  • Fixed some force close issues
  • Fixed some memory leaks
  • Predictions not lost when changing keyboard layout (e.g to symbols)
  • Fixed DOuble CApitalization issue

Things to be aware of:

  • Flowing currently only works in fields where you see the prediction bar: in fields that have their own prediction or completion there is no prediction bar and therefore no Flow (e.g. URL bars, search bars, the “to” field of an email)
  • Flow-through-space only works in languages where smart space works – in some languages this is turned off because words are often made by combining other words together, and so smart space would divide up words that you want to keep as one. Arabic, Armenian, Azerbaijani, Danish, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, Georgian, German, Hungarian, Icelandic, Indonesian, Irish, Korean, Malay, Norwegian, Persian (Farsi), Romanian, Swedish, Tagalog, Turkish, Ukranian, Urdu may not work with Flow-through-space
  • SwiftKey Flow Beta does not currently contain any features that were new in SwiftKey 3.1 (Berry theme, new languages, split layout in landscape for normal-sized devices)
  • Slide-left-to-delete a whole word does not work when Flowing is enabled – instead try holding down the backspace key to delete word-by-word

Known issues:

  • Flow trail is sometimes left on the screen at the end of a word
  • Personalization service continues running when it has finished
  • Memory usage is still higher than we would like
  • Flow trail is very faint on some CyanogenMod ROMs
  • Force closes on Motorola Atrix and LG G2X with custom ROMs >= 4.0
  • If a language pack is downloaded while typing the keyboard is not refreshed
  • Predictions are too large on LDPI devices
  • Predictions occasionally lost when alternately backspacing/spacing at the end of a word
  • Ukrainian spit layout is broken
  • Estonian words containing ö are not predicted
  • Arrow keys do not repeat on longpress

Cool, thanks for the heads up.

I really liked the overall experience of this, but the fact that you can't flow in search bars just plain sucks. I have been splitting time with the new Swype beta, and the very nice TouchPal. It's surprising more people aren't talking about TouchPal-- it's free, it's in the Play store, and it matches Swype Beta and SwiftKey flow on user experience, hands down. Defintely worth a look.

It's been great on my Nexus 4, no issues for me at all. I don't use the "flow" option a lot, but I like that it's there when I need it (great for quick one handed typing). For the majority of typing I prefer using two thumbs and regular Swiftkey action.

I had to uninstall Flow from my Galaxy Nexus because it was raping my already ridiculous battery life (about 8 hours with the phone on idle, data off). I had no such problem on my Nexus 7 though.

Reinstalling it right away, full of hopes.

Does the entire entry disappear for anyone else when flowing a long sentence on the previous build?

    • akshay7394

It did that for me! was really really annoying sometimes. I just started doing sentences half way and then breaking off and continuing.

Looks very promising. I hope the authors are going to enable flow everywhere!

I wish we could just mash together all of the "Swype" keyboards. Everyone of them has a feature I wish another did. Swype - Strong prediction | SwiftKey - Many Options/Fast | TouchPal - Free/Optimized. When will that day come?

  • Ryan Shea

I used swift key beta to type this up and it seems okay with the flow option turned on. Not sure if it's faster than the regular typing method though.

No swipe to delete makes flow a no go for me...

  • JohnnyRockets

Yup TouchPal > ALL other keyboards!

I couldn't get the tablet one to download on my Nexus 10. All it does is open a black window, and then go back to the website. Looked in the downloads folder, and nothing. Anyone else having this problem, or is it just me?

  • Rob

I first used Swype and got very comfortable with it. Then I started using the non-flow variant of SwiftKey and got very comfortable with that. Then I got the CM10.1 ROM on my Galaxy Nexus and started to get into the "swype-like" features of the stock keyboard. I recently have been flip-flopping (like Mitt Romney) between SwiftKey Flow Beta and Swype, and so far Swype still has the game locked down. I'm now going to give TouchPal a look as well. :-)

What's the difference of this with the other SwiftKey Tablet keyboard?

with 1 language my swiftkey is using in excess of 85mb. I have to constantly restart the phone. I do use voice to text a lot but it is getting to be unusable
