Update: We've added a few more changes, courtesy of TeslaCoil.

The highly popular homescreen replacement Nova Launcher is now officially at V2.0 - the latest release just went live minutes ago. Let's cut to the chase: what's new? A whole a lot, based on the changelog below.

What's in this version:

  • Custom Icon Size (Prime)
  • Swipe actions on any desktop icon (Prime)
  • Custom wallpaper cropping
  • Increase maximum desktop grid size
  • Infinite Scroll Drawer Setting
  • Alphabetical list drawer style
  • Small Icons Dock Setting
  • Force wallpaper scrolling on USA SGS2
  • Aggressive Desktop Setting (Keep in memory)*
  • Lower memory usage
  • Improve scrolling performance
  • Fixes, optimizations and tuning

*"Retrieve Running Apps" used for Aggressive Desktop and warning when multiple launchers are running

Additional changes:

  • "Swipe to open folder" allowing swiping over a desktop or dock folder to open it, with the tap action doing something else (such as opening an app).
  • Use app icons as replacement icons, for example to change a folder icon into the icon of an app within it
  • Disc background for folders
  • Folder background transparency
  • Slightly redesigned Nova Action icons (and at Nexus 10 resolution)
  • Auto-close options for drawer and dock
  • Merge Android 4.2 changes
  • New background image for settings apps

Basically, you can tweak your homescreen experience even more, which is what a launcher replacement really should be about, isn't it? Improved scrolling performance and lower memory usage are without a doubt major plusses, too. We're guessing a whole boatload of bug fixes and various optimizations are also packed in this release. Head to the Play Store to get it now, and pick up a Nova Prime license (the premium version) while you're at it - it's an investment you won't regret.

I had my doubts about Nova before switching from Apex, but this is indeed the greatest launcher ever!

I've switched from Apex to Nova to Apex and now back to Nova!

I am happy to see this as I have my stepdad using BIG LAUNCHER right now for vision problems...but unfortunately the custome icon size is only 30% bigger at best right now...would like to see even larger.

I've been using the stock launcher on Nexus 4 but maybe I'll go back to this. I've already bought it and it worked great on my Note LTE.

    • donttrollmepeople

i would. if only for the faster than light animations. stock android is slow.

      • http://www.facebook.com/lucyparanormal Daniel Tiberius

They're not slow on the Nexus 4, but they may be faster with Nova, so we'll see.

You guys are super quick as usual. I had just email Ron with some other changes that I couldn't fit into the Play Store's 500 character limit.
[edit]Super quick again, you've already updated the article before I posted this[/edit]

    Some additional changes are:

"Swipe to open folder" allowing swiping over a desktop or dock folder to open it, with the tap action doing something else (such as opening an app).

Use app icons as replacement icons, for example to change a folder icon into the icon of an app within it

    Disc background for folders

    Folder background transparency

Slightly redesigned Nova Action icons (and at Nexus 10 resolution)

Auto-close options for drawer and dock

    Merge Android 4.2 changes

New background image for settings apps

It's an awesome release and I'm super proud of it.

Thanks Kevin - just added the rest of the changes into the post.

Everything ok, but now it seems to have problems with an icon theme I was using..its like the theme can't match the apps, so all the apps don't have the proper themed icon, but only a generic themed icon

Previously the theme was applied correctly.. Not sure if a problem of the theme itself

great job on the release. I've been running the beta for I don't know how long and it feels so comfortable I forgot that it was not an official release. Great job on stability fixes

I'm a big fan of your work. Good job

    • John

Kevin, u da dev. Your launcher is what Swype is to keyboards. Cannot b replaced. Thank you.

I had been using the beta version before this, so I had these since few days. Finally in stable release version. My most fav feature - Custom Icon size. Finally able to kick Go Launcher to the curb; 'coz that's the only thing that was holding me there. You Rock, Kevin.

Another feature I'd like to request is 'theme preview'. Currently, Look and feel > Icon Theme shows a LIST of themes. Text. But I have no idea how the theme will look once I apply it. Please change this to show preview images specified in strings.xml (as Apex does) or themecfg.xml (as Go does).

I'm hoping you can help me out here. Galaxy Nexus 4.2.1 - When I pull down my notification bar and click a notification and then use the back button to go back to the home screen, it goes to the stock launcher. I have to hit the home button to get to Nova, which works right away since it is the default launcher. Has this bug affected anyone else? Any help would be much appreciated.

    • Sqube

If you had updated the app with just the ability to swipe to open a folder and the bug fixes, this would have been awesome. All that other stuff? Delicious, delicious icing on the app cake.

  • Dinofan01

I really regret not buying this app when it was on sale...

    • donttrollmepeople

yah cant beat it for a quarter.

  • xriderx66

DAMN IT! I just switched to Apex and got all settled down.
Anyone have a good desktop layout swapper app?

    • Chris Clark

Nova should be able to import your layout from Apex.

Anyone know of any launchers that allow a 4x1 widget in the dock bar? I think it would be cool to have a weather widget or sports scores widget down there along with the ability to swipe to it when I want to get some info from it. This is the only thing that would make me consider moving from Nova (although I probably still wouldn't).

    • BrianLipp

if you go into Nova settings, hold down the Vol Down button for a few seconds (i think its 3) and a "Labs" section will appear. One of the options in there is "Allow any size widget in Dock". Since its in Labs its an experimental feature and obviously the widgets will look a little weird since they arent designed to be in the dock

      • http://www.anivision.org/ Christopher Bailey (Xcom923)

yeah but it works pretty well, it's even gotten better over time.

        • Captain Kirkoid

Elixir on the PlayStore allows custom widgets to be used in Dock Bars I think on any launcher

          • http://www.anivision.org/ Christopher Bailey (Xcom923)

meh, the labs feature works just fine and I don't have to install anything/

now just waiting for the inevitable apex launcher update within the next day or so

  • anzensepp1987

Is there also an option to decrease the fonts? That's my only reason to stick with Holo Launcher HD (paid) at the moment. Decreasing the icon-size is for me only useful when it is also possible to scale down the fonts.

    • http://www.anivision.org/ Christopher Bailey (Xcom923)

controlling the DPI of the app is how I deal with font size. Otherwise I don't believe there is a way to scale the fonts

      • Caleb Olson

        Go Paranoid Android!

      • anzensepp1987

As I said, Holo Launcher HD comes with that function to control the font-sizes within all parts of the launcher.

    • BrianLipp

I dont know if youve already done it but in the Android settings under display theres an option for font size: Small, Normal, Large and Huge. Its a system wide font change, so if you just want the app names fonts to change this wont work.

      • anzensepp1987

Already did that. But thanks anyway. :)

  • donttrollmepeople

there are a lot of nice additions.

  • Sungokhu

I'm already happy with the native Touchwiz on Note II, but Nova is much better and I need it to replace TW default dock.

  • Yannick

Amazing launcher. I've been playing with it all day long with my new Nexus 4. My opinion is simple: That's how stock Android should be! Possibilities are countless. One regret though: the color theme option (to override default Holo Blue) is not applied everywhere in the system, so it's inconsistent.

  • dobbsy

Fantastic launcher. I have the Prime version and it's great. It's only missing one thing that I really wish it had: I'd like to sort the app drawer by something other than alpha. Often I'll install multiple apps and if I forget the name of one it's a pain. If I could sort by install date, it would solve this problem. This is the only feature that I miss from Go Launcher.

  • JDHokie

After the update, my wallpaper has shifted (vertically down) and I can't figure out why. I'm running the 'PieUI' theme, so custom grid size, no notification bar. I'm thinking it's a simple fix ... but I can't find out what happened. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

  • Mike Harris

I love Nova Launcher, but there's one thing they changed that I wish they hadn't - tucking away the option to restart it under and "Advanced" section. I have a clock widget that never loads properly when my phone boots up (since there's no network connection yet), so I always go in and restart Nova after everything's booted up. I know it's only one extra button press, but still...

  • Trel

I think the custom cropping is broken. I use a fixed wallpaper, and I cropped one with the portrait preset, but the result is a very zoomed in subset of what I actually selected. I see about 50% of the cropped area.
