It may not be all that often that a phone over a year old will still be getting many updates, but lo and behold, it's a Festivus miracle. Users are reporting that the original Droid RAZR/RAZR MAXX is currently seeing an update roll out to Jelly Bean (4.1.2) right now. And to think, this phone launched with Gingerbread.

The update is 331.7MB, so you'll want to get on WiFi before you start the download. Once it's installed your system version will be bumped to 98.72.8, and Jelly Bean will be all yours, and everything that entails, including Google Now, Project Butter, and all the fancy new voice search options.

We haven't heard any official announcements from Motorola or Verizon on this one yet, but it could simply be that this update was scheduled for today, and everyone's just taking the day off. It's a nice treat either way.

    What about the Droid 4?

  • brad

Downoad quit not even 1% through, and when i went back to try and pull it again it says my device is up to date.

    • Shaun

      Same problem I had!

      • Rodney Bolden

Yeah I'm told they pulled the update from the servers. Apparently it was a mistake, but should be coming out soon

  • Shaun

My Razr Maxx started the update today and paused. It displayed a message that it would resume shortly but an hour later I recieved a message that the download failed. I attempted a manuel update, but my phone says its up to date on 4.0.4. Any ideas here?

    • brad

I think it was a case of someone pushing the "release update" button too soon lol

      • Shaun

It seems to be a common problem from reading other threads. Verizon.is apparently being bombarded and one person reports that Verizon told him they were experiencing "pre-release" difficulties. That seems to be code for we dont know what to do

  • CJ

Anyway to force download the update for Droid RAZR? "Your device is up to date! No update is necessary at this time" is the message I am getting.

Installing it now...Merry Christmas to me

I clicked on Settings, About Phone, then System Updates. It said it would send me a notification when it finished downloading, but I still have full control over my phone?

  • j.randolph

Got it today and works fine for me. Took 15 minutes to download and install. Not a huge difference in GUI, but seems butteryer.

So any idea on when it's coming out

  • gsj8171

I have a Droid RAZR Maxx HD. As a Software Test Engineer I can assure you that Jellybean 4.1.1 was not formally tested on this phone prior to its release. Which doesn't make sense considering this phone is one of the top 5 on the market.

Things that don't work after the update include:

Wireless - It will only connect to a router with WPS, which is only on newer routers and not very secure so I had it turned off. I turned it back on, tried to connect but my phone kept saying "WPS failed, try again later", after 7 tries of figuring out that it only turns on when the wireless is turned off then back on and pass codes on the router and phone are quickly entered (before the phone connection is shut of again), I then had wireless....until I turned my wireless off for the night. Today it won't connect again. So I get to do it all over.

    - When my phone is in my car dock, both Voice command and the new Google voice search cannot hear or play sound. Mute and deaf. Yesterday i fixed this temporarily by going to settings, apps, all apps and clearing the data it both apps. Today the issue is back.

    - Contact groups have lost contacts.
