We all knew this day was coming, and now it's here: Solid Explorer has graduated from beta. As one normally expects, the final version of the application brings several new features to the table:

-Out of Beta, yay!
-Support for Samsung's Multi Window
-Support for subtitles with streaming videos
-Ability to set ringtones
-Busybox included in the app
-Fixed issues with refreshing the gallery
-Optimized package size
-Minor bug fixes and stability improvements

It also brings something else that was quite unexpected: a price tag. What was one a "beta" is now listed as a "trial" - after two weeks with the app, you have to pony up a couple bucks to continue using it. Of course, the dev does deserve to get paid for his work, but this sudden switch has a lot of users upset. Even we, as users (and lovers) of Solid, find this move questionable; why not just transform the beta into a free, ad-based version, and offer a paid ad-free version? That model seems to work quite well for file managers, and gives users the opportunity to willfully show their support instead of being "forced" into paying, because that never bodes well.

Still, if you're a fan of Solid, you can grab it from below.

Glad im not using it, prefer X-plore file manager and File Explorer FX

  • Jeffrey Tarman

Switched back to ES File Explorer since it does almost the same thing and still free

    • http://www.facebook.com/KaranHarshWardhan Narak Wh

ah but you HAD made a conscious choice to use this over ES didn't you...just saying!

  • James Legault

Still a fan of Astro. Never got to try solid.

  • http://www.facebook.com/glazzi Leon A-z

Best explorer in Android, it's fair to get paid for your work...

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1745689461 Hal Motley

+1 I am always amazed by the amount of functionality this file manager has including cloud support, dual-panes and a nice UI (native Holo themes would be cool too and the ability to switch between the two).

Since the Beta I have been using Solid Explorer as my primary file manager for everything to with file management so the £1.26 feels negligible to me.

  • http://www.facebook.com/ostrowski.m Michał Ostrowski

This app could cost 10$ and I'd still purchase it... best Android app after TB, hands down.

  • John

Shady move but he's lucky he has a nice app to back that decision up.

  • http://www.steveedson.co.uk Steve Edson

Couldn't agree more: The app is brilliant and the dev deserves to get paid, but they could hav handled it better.

  • http://twitter.com/bat0nas Tomas Misevičius

Made me disappointed as well. I was waiting for Android Police reaction.

And here we go. Thanks for posting this.

I expected beta transforms to paid version as a reward for us as a beta testers.

    But was not expecting trial!!!

    Damn you devs..

    • username_already_exists_error

that's the way it is. the dev deserves to be paid. if you want the free version, download the beta from xda or just uninstall it and use other file manager (total commander is good). if the dev rewards all the beta testers, he will give almost 1m licenses to all who downloaded the beta version. the dev needs to eat too but maybe he can consider a free version with ads. i was not disappointed, i immediately bought the unlocker to support a good app.

  • http://twitter.com/lusky3 lusky3

Not a fan of the price tag. I am a fan of paying if I feel like it, not because I'm force to.

    • username_already_exists_error

you are not forced to pay it. you can uninstall it if you do not want to pay after the trial is over.

  • Sven Enterlein

Just read the description of the unlock key:

"In case of any problems don't bother to write to me including the [UNLOCKER] tag in the title"

    • http://twitter.com/bat0nas Tomas Misevičius

      What is unlocker tag?

      • xnadax

It is the string "[UNLOCKER]", in the subject line. :) But that was not the point of Sven's post.

        • Sven Enterlein

Yeah, I'm sorry. I should have stated that I took the quote from his Play Store link.

      • kindrudekid

helps you filter out emails, very usefull!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tyler-Bibeault/1801573077 Tyler Bibeault

English isn't his native language. I'm sure that was a translation error and it was something along the lines of "Don't hesitate to write"

      • defred34

Yeah, seeing the context I think you're right. Otherwise, it wouldn't make sense.

      • Matthew Fry

I went ahead and emailed him in case he wasn't aware of the error. While he may deserve some flak by the sudden transition, he doesn't deserve flak for an obvious mistake.

  • http://profiles.google.com/tdrussell1 Trent Russell

I uninstalled. It's a nice app, but i don't NEED it and i didn't appreciate the approach the dev took.

  • xnadax

I wouldn't call the price tag entirely unexpected. The dev said from the beginning that the beta version would be free, but that it would turn into a paid app when leaving beta. Now, I don't remember HOW I know this, but I am very sure about reading it when I first got the app a long time ago.

  • daas88

    I won't update :)

    • Jens Knutson

Haha, yeah, screw that guy and all his work! ROFL!!11#1! XD

      ...

Congratulations, you are now an official contributor to the stereotype that Android users are cheap and that the platform isn't worth investing in.

      • daas88

And where I live dollars are pretty expensive, the government sells them at a fair price but a very limited amount, and I already spent my yearly limit. Go judge someone you know.
And as it's not illegal or anything, I'll just keep using the beta.

        • Jens Knutson

Fair enough. I didn't say it was illegal though; that's wasn't the point. I responded because your _entire message_ was just: "I won't update." followed up with a smiley face.

Particularly with the little smiley at the end, it seemed that the only purpose of a message like that was to share how smug you were feeling that you could get away with not paying the guy. That's a _toxic_ attitude, and really holds back the Android community long term.

Since you're in Venezeula, it's a fair bet English isn't your first language. If so, maybe this was just a misunderstanding, in which case I apologize for the harshness, but I hope you can see where I was coming from, too.

          • daas88

Yeah, I agree the smiley face wasn't the right attitude in the context, so I edited the comment. Are we cool now? :)

  • Asdf

Poor bastards don't want to pay for good ap, enjoy your life when you will have to work and nobody will want to pay you.

    • Mike Yost

It's not paying for the app that's the issue; it's the fact that there was no warning that it was coming and the app has been free for ages. Just a simple message while it was in beta saying that it would eventually be a payed app would have changed a lot of peoples feelings towards it. Or even just having an ad version for free which most devs do anyway.

  • defred34

I won't mind (and probably eventually will) pony up the $2, but since we all took part in the Beta, anyone who upgrades from the current version should've got the UNLOCKED version. This is because we all helped the dev improve the app. He'd have made tons more of money anyway.

    • http://www.facebook.com/KaranHarshWardhan Narak Wh

sure! maybe you want a percentage of the profits as well? seeing as how you helped so much with the development and all...

    • CuriousCursor

I think only people who actually bothered to submit bug reports should qualify for the unlocked version. I happily paid the $2 after considering for a few minutes. Well worth the money.

  • http://twitter.com/rohanXm Rohan Mathur

Mad at a dev for asking to get paid for his work? If you don't want to pay for it, either continue using the beta or switch to one of the many alternatives available Don't blame someone for wanting to get paid for their hard work.

  • defred34

Here's a protip: Don't update and you get to use it for free on your current device for the foreseeable future!

  • dextersgenius

More than happy to pay for the app. Dev is talented and the app is well worth it - nothing even comes close to Solid Explorer. But I do agree with the comments - this could have been handled better. The 'ol switch-n-bait tactic is a bit underhanded.

  • asianrage

Currently, I'm back and forth between two excellent file manager apps, Root Explorer (Paid) and Astro (Paid). I love Astro for its immense usability along with Drive integration, but I NEED Root Explorer for system file management. Solid Explorer came out after I bought those two apps, but seems to blend them into one. This almost makes it a must buy on first thought. I'll have to try it out before buying.

  • nukeblitz

I don't quite understand why everyone is upset. If any of you have checked his xda thread, he has maintained from the very start that this was meant to be a paid app.

That said, I will not be using this app anymore - not because of the app or the developer though. It's because I don't have a credit card and I refuse to pirate apps.
Google! Bring me carrier billing in India!

    • atlouiedog

I've never been to that thread and I knew, so the information has spread.

    • bondx99

You can use Debit card too..ICICI works fine for me!

      • http://twitter.com/alekhkhanna Alekh Khanna

Not anymore. DCs are a hit or a miss since the time Google decided to charge in INR. Those that show the price in USD or some other currency work fine with a DC, others don't. :|

  • Kathryn Fortunato

Gotta say, $2 is hardly an unfair tax to pay for a great app that can really make your life easier. I say just roll with it and support good devs.

  • Disqus Sucks

It's a good app and all, I just don't use it enough to pay for it. Switched to X-plore yesterday and I'm liking it.

  • http://twitter.com/havens1515 Randroid

Good thing I have ROM Toolbox. It has an explorer that is just as functional as this, plus MANY other things that make it worth the cost (Plus I got it on a 50% off sale)

  • http://www.facebook.com/KaranHarshWardhan Narak Wh

i love how people bitch and moan about being beta testers and how they should get the license for it for a 2$ app. you were beta TESTERS not beta developers :D

  • twangansta

the dev posted on xda that it would be a paid app after beta
    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1537189.

don't remember if he posted it in his beta logs on google play but i knew it from the start when i installed it. hands down worth it

  • FirefighterMatt56

I'm surprised so many people are complaining about a $2 price tag. That is a STEAL for a quality app like this one. I'm going to purchase it right now without a 2nd thought before the price goes up.

  • GigiAUT

I don't mind the price tag and he did say there would eventually be one. I don't know what people are talking about saying there was no warning. I don't mind supporting a good dev. As for the guys working on Diaro though...hmmm

  • coversnails

The thing that bothers me is in the Play Store listing the sixth picture shows the dev has a cracked version of need for speed most wanted on his phone. If he cant be bothered to pay for apps then why should anyone bother to pay for his?

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Cameron Summerson

That's probably because it's not available where he lives, but that doesn't excuse piracy in my book. Nice catch - that's definitely some shady bullshit.

      • Freak4Dell

Meh, I say it does excuse piracy (then again, I have a less-than-conventional view on piracy in the first place). If something isn't available in your location, the company clearly didn't want your money anyway, so they have no right to bitch about it if you "steal" it. Next time, they should consider accepting your money.

    • defred34

That's the last straw! Imma gonna pirate this and spread the word to others to pirate it, just because the dev is a God-damned greedy pirateer himself!

      • Mike Reid

I dev 4 sale. I don't pirate apps out of principle. But I won't claim to be innocent of everything.

Let he who is without sin and all that...

    • AE35

That is kinda messed up but I still paid the $2 anyway because I like the app and it took time and effort to develop. Anyway pirating would be trying to make 2 wrongs equal a right.

    • username_already_exists_error

that sucks! the fact i already bought the unlocker but i am in doubt to any dev that pirate apps. back to total commander now. goodbye $1.99

    • Freak4Dell

Am I missing something here? I don't see anything about Need For Speed in any of the pictures.

      • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Looks like he replaced the screenshots.

    • tom
  • Stylus_XL

It was always a beta version, and quite clearly labelled a beta version. If he now wants to charge for the official version and retire the beta that's justifiable. It's not as if there aren't tons of free alternatives to get your ungrateful tight fists onto anyway. I for one will be more than happy to pay -it's a great app and his hard work deserves to be rewarded.

  • Nabil Shaikh

How is this compared to X-plore?

  • Guðjón Jónsson

Douche move. Transition handled very poorly.

  • LeDerp

App is awesome. Just one of those apps where i'll encourage them *looks through his pockets full of dust*

  • Luis Augusto Fretes Cuevas

This is an awesome application, and I'm paying for it happily.

  • http://gamingblather.com/ Drak

I don't mind paying for the app since I've used it for free several months and I think the dev deserves something for his efforts. $2 is reasonable. My only problem, and with all apps that use the same procedure, is having to install both the app and the key. Two separate apps.
I'd prefer just having to install the Paid/Unlocked/whatever version. Just a pet peeve of mine.

    • Freak4Dell

I hate it when developers do that. Is it really that difficult to just build two packages that include the whole app? I mean, yeah, I can hide the key "app" in my launcher, but I really should not have to.

  • patapongirl

I don't mind paying and I honestly think the price is really reasonable.

But this could definitely be handled better.

  • spydie

total commander is still the best on the market

  • k2hsharpe

i get a little tired of people that presumably get paid for their reviews whining about paying a few dollars for the apps they use. How about this - put ads alongside your reviews but you don't get paid unless enough of us think your review worth reading? Just a thought

  • http://twitter.com/SuperHutagalung Parulian Hutagalung

    uninstalling it.

  • http://profiles.google.com/rcastles Robert Castles

This app is in another league for file managers. Some things are worth 199 pennies. If the world was right, I think Google would buy this tech and include it in android.

  • AE35

I've been using the Beta and I like it. $2 is cheap and I had a free-ride for a while. I bought it.

  • sushidog

    1. Many of us helped this so called dev to develop the app on Xda thread. Now he treats us as regular customers and wants us to buy the program.

    2. We all got that stupid Troll face meme when beta expired, even those who had nothing to do with piracy.

    3. Like someone already mentioned: "The thing that bothers me is in the Play Store listing the sixth picture shows the dev has a cracked version of need for speed most wanted on his phone. If he cant be bothered to pay for apps then why should anyone bother to pay for his?"

    4. I've tried contacting the developer via email several times. Until now I did not get a single response.

    5. Since the page was deleted from xda there is no way how to get support.Play Google link is outdated and email supporte serves no purpose.

    6. In short, this developer does not respect anyone.

Almost everything that this application "offers" has long been implemented in Total Commander for FREE.
