When Ron tore down the most recent Play Store APK, he discovered references to pre-orders hiding within. It wasn't clear at the time just what this option would apply to, but now we know! It's books! According to a new help page, if an item on Play Books is not yet available, you may find a pre-order option that you can use to place a reservation. Neat!

The page also states that when you place a pre-order, your credit card will not be charged until the book is available. This may be nice for some people who would prefer to pay later rather than sooner. On the other hand, it does mean that you will be setting up a surprise charge on your account later, so make sure your personal budget takes that into account.

Unfortunately, the pre-orders aren't available for devices, like we were hoping. However, given the clusterf-*ahem*... mess over on the Play Store right now with the Nexus 4 (again), maybe it's for the best.

Update: Here is what book pre-orders look like:

Pre-ordering ebooks still doesn't make sense. Why not just wait until it was released. It's not like they are going to run out of stock.

I'd venture a guess that this is likely a test bed scenario for enabling pre-ordering in the future for other stuff.

This. I am sure it's not the only thing we'll be able to pre-order. Eventually.

Convenience. Instead of remembering release date then remembering to go to the play store and purchase some day in the future. I can be plesantly suprised to find that the book has arrived safely to my device without my doing anything.

      • White Pawn

So then it basically amounts to reminder service. Something like 'notify me when released'.

        • Jared Meyering

Yes, more like "Purchase automatically when released" It saves a future step.

I will also guess that they can potentially give discounts to pre-orders. I am sure if people were interested in a book they might use a preorder incentive of saving $1.00 to order said book or app or song etc. The possibilities with pre orders are endless.

Why does (seemingly) nobody offer you the option to charge at the time of pre-order? I hate charges months after I ordered them, because I forget about them, and it's unexpected. When I place a pre-order for anything, 99% of the time, I want my card charged right then and there. Hell, I'd even pay a 50-cent fee on the transaction for the ability to do so in most cases, if I had the option.

Yeah, if only they had this enabled for the N4 N10 launch, could have avoided the fiasco.
