When Chameleon Launcher first hit the scene with promises of a "new Android homescreen," people were excited. As we started to see more and more of this unique launcher, excitement continued to grow. Then we finally got our hands on it, and well - it wasn't what we hoped for. The dev team behind Chameleon have since worked hard to bring more widgets and features to the launcher, increasing not only its usefulness, but reasons you'd actually want to abandon the stock experience for something different.

But there was one thing still holding most users back from even giving it a chance: the price. There's no denying that the $10 release price was a bit hard to swallow, as most people just aren't willing to pay that kind of money for any app, let alone a launcher. As a result, the price of Chameleon has just been dropped down to a much more reasonable $4. With that price, a lot more people should be willing to give Chameleon a shot - though it's unclear at this time if that's a permanent change or just a sale price for the holidays. We've actually reached out to for clarification and will update when we hear something back.

In the meantime, though, hit the widget to give Chameleon a shot.

Not compatible with other widgets = useless

It is compatible with other widgets. I have the Google+ widget on my tablet homescreen using Chameleon.

Oh ok my bad, sorry. Last time I checked it wasn't.

  • TK

I can't get into a screen full of widgets. I like a tidy home screen with only my most important app shortcuts. It's just not for me.

whoa, we have like mirror-image twins here, guys!

  • Eric Jones

I thought once they lowered the price they couldn't raise it? Or is that, once they go free they can't charge?

    • qak

You can't make a free app into a paid app. Price changes happen all of the time, though.

      • Eric Jones

Ah, okay, thanks. I knew it was something along those lines.

  • cy_n_ic

"People were excited" i dont remember it like that. I remember people wondering why this launcher was getting pushed so hard on AP. And how folks like nova and apex so much. Maybe i missed the excitement? Apex FTW!

    • ECBomb

That's true. Just look at all the related topics about this launcher just above the comments.

Who knows, money might have changed hands, or one of these writers here might have a personal interest in the project. But really, I don't understand why AP keeps on talking about Chameleon when no one else really cares. Same goes for certain other apps that they push very hard.

        Really, conspiracy theories?

The reason that they are covering Chameleon so much is that it's a bit different from other home screens. The project originally appeared ambitious and was very well presented, and definitely well promoted by their team. Since then, it's turned into an example of what not to do (over promising and under delivering). It's still an interesting project, with some legitimate potential, it just hasn't lived up to the high expectations or the high price tag.

You're sick of hearing about it, but there are other people who still want to see what's happening. I'm reasonably interested in part because I am thinking about writing a Chameleon widget. I suspect a lot of people will give this app a second look now that the price is in line with other launchers.

I'll keep my eye on this. With the N10, there is so much screen real estate that I imagine Chameleon would be beautiful and functional.

  • NotTheTodd

    Can I get a refund? I paid $10 :(

    • cy_n_ic

Dont that just piss ya off :p

    • leoingle

      wow, you very dumb

    • Sqube

You thought it was worth $10, so I'm not entirely clear on why you should get a refund.

    • Mei

No way is Chameleon worth that much, and to pay them in advance to develop it (when they were in Kickstarter). I'm sorry to say, but you could have gotten a better free launcher (Apex, Nova). Or, just pay $0.25 for Nova 'Pro' version when it was on Google Play on sale.

  • Marc R.

Why is everyone asking for a refund as soon as something is getting cheaper? Should I ask for a refund too only because my Nexus S is now cheaper than two years ago too? Or because my car is getting cheaper?

    • Sam

I know I completely agree, people are just greedy now days. It's so annoying.

  • leoingle

I knew the overhyped crap wouldnt take long for the price to drop. who the hell is going to pay 10 bucks for a freaking launcher???

    • ECBomb

You should ask the 500,000+ who paid for SPD 3D Shell...

      • leoingle

somebody should of told them the Windows Mobile days are over.

    • ta2025

The same people that will now pay for $15.99 for "Go Next"

been using it since it's kickstart days. Donated about 25 just b/c I liked the idea behind it. At first I had a tough time with it, but after what you'd consider milestone 2 (aka, when widgets were allowable) it just flies.
Have it on an HP touchpad and I've been content. I like Nova, never got around to trying out Apex, and now ADW just updated (though its not fully 4.x+ so I wouldn't count it here)

  • SoWhy

I still won't buy it without being able to try it, price drop or not
