Just after users began reporting that their Galaxy Nexus devices were receiving an update to Android 4.2 Jelly Bean (build JOP40C, to be precise), it looks like the manual update package is available for download. As could be expected, this coincides almost perfectly with the launch of Google's newest additions to the Nexus family – the Nexus 4 and 10.

Of course, it's worth reiterating that this is an update specifically for the Galaxy Nexus' Takju variant – that means only Galaxy Nexus handsets bought from the Play Store need apply (we're still waiting to hear about the Yakju variant). Your device should also be running build JZO54K before trying to install the update manually.

For those ready to download and install manually, the process is easy. If you have a custom recovery, just download the zip (linked below), move it to your device, and flash as usual. Those with stock recovery should keep the file on their computer, and just follow a few easy instructions:

Disclaimer: Android Police isn't responsible for any harm to your device - proceed at your own risk.

Step 1.

Reboot your Galaxy Nexus, holding the Volume Up and Volume Down buttons while it boots up. Once you see the fastboot menu and "Start," press Volume Up to navigate to "Recovery" and press the power button. Once you see an Android with a red exclamation point icon, press Volume Up and the Power button together, which will bring you to a new menu. Navigate to "apply update from adb."

Step 2.

Connect your Galaxy Nexus to your computer with a USB cable.

Make sure you have a recent version of adb that supports the sideload command (if you don't, download the latest Android SDK to ensure your adb is up-to-date).

Open up a command prompt (cmd in Windows, regular shell in Linux and Mac) in the same directory as the JOP40C zip file you've downloaded.

Type in the following:

 adb sideload e587de13bf8a.signed-takju-JOP40C-from-JZO54K.e587de13.zip

You should see a progress bar, which will eventually hit 100%. At this point, your device is installing the update.

Step 3.

Reboot and enjoy! You are now running Android 4.2 on your Takju Galaxy Nexus.

I'm 4.1.2 yakju. Will be possible via OTA ?

  • http://profiles.google.com/tills13 Tyler Sebastian

I'm getting errors. Script asserts are failing, yet both asserts should, to the best of my knowledge, pass. I'm on a Takju (Maguro), 4.1.2 (JZO54K) device... and it's failing.

    • David Stallard

I'm the same - are yours related to Gallery.apk? Assuming it's related to manually updating to the 4.2 camera & gallery apps (couldn't wait any longer to try Photo Sphere) but haven't had a chance to play around to get it fixed. Let me know if you have any luck.

      • http://profiles.google.com/tills13 Tyler Sebastian

Oh... it might be that keyboard...

I've avoided the gallery thusfar, but I could only resist that keyboard for so long :P

        • David Stallard

Yep, I reckon that's it. Wonder how we can get around it - surely it can't be that hard...

          • http://profiles.google.com/tills13 Tyler Sebastian

I just did a factory reset... we'll see how this goes

          • Joel Stockley

I am getting the same error, error 7. I have not touched my install apart from rooting it since I flashed the full ROM onto it about 2 months back when the latest takju rom came out sadly...

          • David Stallard

I tried removing the Gallery completely but still get the same issue - dang it!

How can I re flash the 4.1.2?

          • http://www.facebook.com/samuelbelanger Samuel Belanger

How do you do a full wipe and re image ?

          • Puleen

Getting the same error as Joel above.

          • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Factory reset won't work if you modified part of /system. All factory reset does is delete data from /data.

You'll need to restore the files you modified or flash a factory image.

          • David Stallard

So I'll need to find a copy of the standard 4.1 GalleryGoogle.APK and flash that, THEN I'll be able to flash the 4.2 ROM?

        • http://twitter.com/tadejkolino Tadej Rudec

Well, if you didn't backup the stock .apk and .odex, you know for the future what to do.

      No, of course not.

  • tbonefsg

    still can't force update

    • Leo209

I forced it. I tried just doing a manual update, and found nothing. I then went to settings, apps, selected Google service framework, and selected clear data and force stop. Then I checked for updates again. I had to do it like 4 times, but it finally prompted the download :D

      • Timothy

This worked for me on the second try. Easier than adb. Although I don't know if it affects anything else.

        • The_Chlero

usually, forcing the update by this method, some times users report problem with their google account, from just deleting some info to losing everything they bought from the google store.

use it on your own risk

    • http://www.facebook.com/OleIChristensen Ole I. Christensen

No. Just read that Google now skip updates for the Nexus S model. Sorry.

  • Steven Van Bael

I had the assert failures too initially. But then I completely reflashed 4.1.2 from the official factory images at https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#takjujzo54k and afterwards the update.zip applied nicely

    • Moshe Brevda

Same here. Reflashed system image (link as above, unpack zip, ./fastboot flash system /path/to/system.img). Also needed to flash the radio as well.

  • Cédric Tremblay

    I encountered some problems.

I had previously flashed the new 4.2 clock and camera on my 4.1.2 Galaxy Nexus.

When trying to install the takju 4.2, it didn't work (saying something about assert failed : DeskClockGoogle.apk).

Anyway, I reflashed 4.1.2 then flashed 4.2 and now it works quite well.

    • subramanianv

      Does it wipe data?

Status 7 after full wipe ...

Followed the step-by-step guide, but when running the line from the command prompt I only get bunch of information about the Android Debug Bridge... Something like "about" section. Plus, my phone is stuck on "Now send the package..." screen... Help, pls!! :)

I'm having trouble with "Once you see an Android with a red exclamation point icon, press Volume Up and the Power button together, which will bring you to a new menu." When I press Volume Up and the Power button, nothing happens. This worked fine on my Nexus 7, but not my Galaxy Nexus. Any ideas?

    • http://www.ninetwozero.com Karl Lindmark

I noticed that if I made sure I pressed POWER before UP, then the rate of success was significantly higher.

      • Jeff Thomas

        That worked, thanks!

I got the notification for a system update, followed the instructions to restart on screen, but when the phone powered down, it never powered up again. I tried turning it on, but the power button did not work. After a few minutes, I was forced to remove/replace the battery to get my phone to turn on. Long story short, phone works perfectly fine, but I didn't get 4.2--I still have 4.1.2, and it says "up to date." Not sure what this means....
