You know how everyone is excited for Google's Android event on Monday (October 29)? Sorry to rain on your parade (heh), but they just cancelled it thanks to Hurricane Sandy.

No word yet on when it will be rescheduled for, but obviously we'll let you know as soon as we do. Until then, you can always console yourself by checking out what we expected to see at the event - namely, Android 4.2, the Nexus 10, and the Nexus 4.

Maybe he isn't affected by hurricanes. Here in the UK I have never had a hurricane. Though we have had severe flooding back in 2007.

          • Jamie

British as well the UK and we lucky to not have a bad flooding spell at least once a year!

Hurricane wise, anyone in the UK (along with Northern France, Belgium and Netherlands) in October 1987 so 25 or over would experienced one

In light of the circumstances, I don't know why they wouldn't just do a live broadcast presentation from California, rather than completely mess everyone up with rescheduling. Keep it as scheduled, with a live announcement and demo on Google+.
Show us the stuff and tell us when we can order it. Imagine that.
I know, I know, all the little bloggy-woggers would cry if they can't touchy-wouchy the new tabwet. :)

    • Justin W

I thinking the same thing. What's going to happen with the devices that were scheduled to go on sale on the 30th now?

      • Tim Kermode

        No sale :-(

    • GazaIan

They want people there. It's too short notice to switch locations to the other side of the US.

    • Abhigyan Banerjee

This would also be a pretty sick demo of Google+'s hangout capabilities, if it comes to pass (though it wouldn't).

  • Freak4Dell

Sucks for the people that bought their tickets.

I never understood why Google doesn't just hold these events on their campus, or at least close to it. I get that New York is the cool city to be in and all, but it seems like such a hassle to do an event in a different city than where you are actually located. Yes, I know Google has an office in New York, but I don't think anything Android related really goes on there. They have both engineers and ad sales there. It's possible the engineering teams work a bit on Android, but most of it is probably still done at the Mountain View campus.

    • jaduncan

A lot of the press and particularly TV studios are in NYC; you want to make it as easy for as many of them as possible to come.

      • Freak4Dell

It's the press's job to go where the news is, not the other way around.

        • http://codytoombs.wordpress.com/ Cody Toombs

Don't forget, ultimately this is an advertising event. Google, like many other companies, prefers the press to be in a good mood during and after the event because it translates to better coverage. When the event is purely about product announcements (as opposed to Google I/O), they cater to the press.

  • jaduncan

Well, as someone who a) likes android and b) is reasonably human, I'd rather wait than have the launch potentially sit incongruously next to severe storm damage and even possibly the dead.

Mother nature wants MicroSD slot in Nexus 4

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1745689461 Hal Motley

Google will always be stubborn about it, it's more likely we'll see a MicroSD in an iPhone 26.

      • NicholasMicallef

Forget about seeing it from google or apple. Apple is all about getting rid of anything they can (e.g. optical drives and many connectors) and they want to make more money by selling you higher capacity options and google wants to promote cloud storage. HTC, LG and other OEMs are following suit while others like Samsung are trying to cram as much as they can in their phones. Whether we like it or not removable batteries and MicroSD are dying.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1745689461 Hal Motley

Good point, though I do lament the MicroSD's disappearance because I do like the storage it gives me for the price. Fact is that the cost per gigabyte for a MicroSD has always been cheaper than the internal memory. Also the devices I want are nearly always 16GB (Galaxy S II w/ contract and Galaxy Nexus).

Though Google are starting to approve of 32GB devices, so maybe I won't mind as much.

          • NicholasMicallef

Yeah me too I still use micro SD in my phone xD. IDK about 32 GB, rumours are showing that the Nexus 4 will have 8GB!!! with a possible 16GB model! hopefully they have at least a 32GB with the Nexus 10, hopefully 64...

        • donttrollmepeople

its almost like cloud storage is googles inadvertent way of trying to lock people into the android ecosystem.

          • Nicholas Loomans

Except you aren't locked in and can relocate your data any time you want to a competing service AND STILL USE YOUR DEVICES THE SAME WAY (in most cases, can't speak for all).

          • master94

            Still better than Apple's itunes.

          • NicholasMicallef

How do they lock you in? it's not like you can't use Drive on macs or iOS devices let alone windows just like most of google's services.

      • Humberto Hernandez

What about the No FM RADIO on Nexuses? I dont get that...
I dont want (i dont even can) waste data on streaming internet radio...

    And this is why SF>NYC.

    • JensAstrup

Yea, because a sudden earthquake during the presentation would be better...potential tsunami maybe? Way better than a slow moving hurricane. (Not trying to troll, just saying...every region of the US has their natural disaster problem :P)

      • skitchbeatz

obviously the best solution is to move the presentation to the northern midwest

Another cancellation -- it's the 2nd year in a row for the Nexus event! Some kind of bad luck?

  • JensAstrup

I live in NYC and I can tell you from Irene as well as the plans for Sandy that if they had the event somewhere uptown, they would be fine. It would just be windy and rainy. I am so angry right now ugggghhh

    • http://www.facebook.com/Shinakuma George Millhouse

agreed its not going to hit nyc till Tuesday

nah you're doing it wrong try Aaarghhh

  • Kevin Davis

Dear God please cancel the hurricane instead thanks bro

  • Keith Myers

I bet Apple had something to do with this.

  • James

I talked to a Staples manager and she mentioned they already have certain Nexus 7 32GB tablets in stock. She said she couldn't sell them until Google officially announced them on October 29. If the Google event is cancelled, I hope this doesn't mean Staples can't sell me the tablet until Google reschedules :(

Good call Google. And in time for attendees to make arrangements.

  • http://www.facebook.com/DaATXMan Danny Davis

Yeah cause a phone announcement is more important than people's safety...

    • http://codytoombs.wordpress.com/ Cody Toombs

I don't think anybody here wants to see lives put in danger, but it doesn't mean that people can't be disappointed by about the cancellation. The effects of this situation reaches warehouses, shippers, production plants, and resellers who are surely gearing up for a big release. It also reaches a fair number of journalists who had this event in their calendar, some of which can't reschedule. It also is a disappointment to enthusiasts who are eager to replace aging devices. I even know a guy who's phone was damaged a few weeks ago and he's been without a phone since, just because he wanted to wait for this release.

The situation sucks and we all (totally gonna speak for everybody here) feel sympathy for anybody who is in the path of that heartless bitch Sandy. Nobody wants to see anybody hurt (except maybe a couple of internet trolls). We are capable of multi-tasking (unlike iPhones); so along with with concern for those in the area, we can also be disappointed that the new hotness won't be announced as scheduled.

Note: for those who don't understand a dry sense of humor, I'm being serious but I'm saying everything with a fair bit of levity and sarcasm.

  • Faust

    Damn it.

Its not bad enough being in the middle of this hysteria ( New Jersey) but now the fact that this is cancelled just really burns me about this whole thing.

Honestly I believe this hurricane will be a "cry wolf" just like last year. Yes, some areas will be hit, and they will be hit hard. But its not going to be as nearly bad as everyone is saying. Already most of the states around us called for a "state of emergency" (which is funny considering that we are on the direct path of it, and our governor has not done ANYTHING yet) but again I do not think it will be as horrible as people are spinning it out to be.

I am really pissed off at this whole thing for multiple reasons. But mainly I am just pissed off about the storm happening at all. In the most untimeliest of times, I feel bad for everyone. I cannot even imagine how kids will feel when they cannot enjoy halloween this year...

  • Mamahnita

    Lmao reading these comment

  • http://twitter.com/SedDeLibertad Víctor SL

    Damn Apple and their iCloud

  • Former_Verizon_Girl

How DARE they cancel news about a new device. Simply because trains and mass-transits were closed down... and a small group of people were killed in a huge storm!

    Thanks, Sandy!
