We just heard that Rockstar is planning on bringing the excellent Grand Theft Auto: Vice City to Android later this year, but it looks like they've got even more good news. Today you can get Grand Theft Auto III, the original sandbox game, for just $.99. It's normally $4.99, but to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Vice City, you can pick it up for a special price for an unspecified time.

GTAIII was no small feat when it was released in 2001, and even today you'll need relatively new hardware and about half a gigabyte of space to run the game on Android. On the plus side, all the classic missions and the wonderful radio stations are included. If you're in the mood to hurl grenades into live traffic or take another spin in the Dodo, follow your mini-map to the Google Play Store.

Too bad it says it's "incompatible" but clearly it can run.

    • Forcemaker

yes, but if you look at the "reason" for incompatibility it says for me - in Germany - "Dieser Artikel kann im Land Ihres Geräts nicht installiert werden." which means: This article cannot be installed in the country which your device is in."

This means, that I cannot even buy it to the low price, and, when it is available to "3rd world germany" ;-) I might have to pay the normal price of 5 bucks... :-(

Well, thats what the internet is about: locally restricted commerce, ain't it? *exagerating*

can you try going through a US proxy? or if you buy it on a US proxy and than play it in Germany does a DRM kick in and not allow you to play it?

        • Forcemaker

Well, I am not sure but I think the country-specific-restriction is not about my IP address being located in Germany, but being my SIM card in a German network.

There were (and still are?) countries in which you may not buy apps and have only access to the free ones, and I think I read that just proxying wouldn't make it.

But nethertheless thanks for the hint!

There are programs to circumvent this, should you need to in the future.

There are 2 different SKUs for it for some reason, ie. 2 different versions in the Play Store for different regions. It's similar to how EA does it. Just search for it and you'll find it. There used to be 3 versions when it was launched but now I only see the German and the international versions.

        German version:

        • Forcemaker

          Thank you sooooo much!

You opened my eyes by hinting that the above link (in the article) uses a different package ID than the one for the German version (the latter is "com.rockstar.gta3ger" with the "ger" appendix). I just did not think that there would be different versions with different package IDs so I did not search for any other.

Now I got it (and I actually don't care about the language, so any version is fine!).

          Again, thx!

Nice. I picked it up a while ago in a previous sale. I should probably finally play it :) Excited about Vice City though! I've been playing a lot of Dead Trigger lately, and found myself daydreaming about a less hectic, more exploration-based game.

    still incompatible with the gs3?

    • BrainOfSweden

Don't think so. My friend has an SGS3 and a Nexus 7, both devices plays the game fine.

  • bobbutts

The damn steering on Galaxy Nexus was set for portrait but the game is playing in landscape. Waited months and never fixed. Don't really care if it's fixed now, not worth the trouble.

Sadly incompatible with my EVO 3D. Tis a shame.

At least it works on my HP TouchPad though. Yay.

This sale is what finally had me determined to root my Xperia Mini successfully in order to edit the build.prop and buy the game for future use. Four flashes and one brick later, and I've finally succeeded, yay :D
