There's a startling amount of crossover between people who use Android for their mobile needs and Windows and Xbox for their desktop and console gaming. The SmartGlass app has been a definite hit for Xbox 360 users who also have Windows Phone 7 devices... all eight of them. Now Android users can join the fun: Microsoft's released the official SmartGlass app for Android, available for free in the Play Store.

If you're not familiar with SmartGlass, it controls just about every aspect of the media-friendly Xbox 360 aside from actual game control. The app will let your navigate though your Xbox's menu, pause and play music and videos, or even purchase new content right from your phone. The tiled interface of the 360 is particularly conducive to touchscreen control, as is the digital keyboard for web surfing or searching the store. Lastly you've got a social portal for all of your Xbox Live friends, including live chat and profile customization.

As a side note: those of you trying out Windows 8 for the first time today can also download Xbox SmartGlass from the Windows Store.

UPDATE: Looks like SmartGlass requires Android 4.0 or higher... but is oddly not compatible with the Nexus 7. Hopefully the Big M will sort this out sooner rather than later.

Windows Phone is a great OS, but I'm glad they ported this to Android.

Edit: not compatible w/ my Nexus 7 which is sad and weird. Works w/ my Galaxy Nexus though. Also, 16MB.

And.... Once again no tablet support....

The lack of tablet support is severely disappointing...

We both have an A500! Could you upload the apk?

      • http://www.Nave360.com Sebastian Gorgon

Mate... if those apps were free i wouldn't complain but you have to spend £4.95 to get it to work on a tablet... not on,

        • http://photo.katzmatt.com Matt Katzenberger

Valid point. I was already using the app combo because there are a lot of apps that don't have landscape but still work fine in it. PayPal for example.

I was mostly disgruntled about Microsoft continually using their WP UI in their Android applications. But that also sucks.

I wish they had spent a bit more time on the Playstation app, it looks a bit shoddy next to this.

Wait.... There's a Playstation app? You're not referring to the one only available in Europe are you?

    No support for Motorola Atrix...

    • Nathan J

Atrix, like my phone (Electrify) got shut out of the ICS upgrade. You should go to supportmymoto.com and sign some petitions. They need all the help they can get. You used to get at least one update with your phone, and even that was sub-par, so we all need to let Motorola know that the new "no update" policy won't stand.

  • Tyler

This sucks, I've been waiting for this and it can't be installed on my phone because I don't have 4.0+

    • sootie

      cm10 ftw

    • daniel

I just read an article on xbox.com saying that android 2.2 and more is required. but mine still doesn't work. maybe they're about to?

  • xnifex

"This app is incompatible with your Sensation."
Boo, just read that it requires Android 4.0 & I'm still running Gingerbread.

  • Jeff Messer

Complaining aside, if you have a device that's supported...wow, I'm actually really impressed! Microsoft is doing a good job keeping their word to support other platforms. I'm sure Nexus 7 and other devices will start working soon.

    • http://photo.katzmatt.com Matt Katzenberger

I bet you could get it working on the n7. I've got it running on my a500 beautifully.

Funny story, this app actually works and looks pretty great on a tablet, it just won't auto rotate. Using a tasker task and orientation control you can force it to though. Also you'll have to download the app on a compatible phone and send yourself the APK...

    • Paul_Werner

      Tried this & my 360 won't detect my N7

      • http://photo.katzmatt.com Matt Katzenberger

There is a setting on the xbox that has to be checked first ("Allow smartglass" or something). If you've already done that then idk.

        • Paul_Werner

Yeah, I had that turned on. Guess I'll have to wait until it's compatible

          • http://profiles.google.com/tills13 Tyler Sebastian

I had to restart my console before it found my device

          • Paul_Werner

I'll try again but what I did was restart my device instead of the console. I was thinking of it backwards possibly

    • http://www.Nave360.com Sebastian Gorgon

Yeah no... i'm not spending £4.95 on apps to fix something Microsoft couldn't be fucked to do.

      • Aaron Horner

Your complaints on a FREE app they didn't even need to release on Android at all is invalid.

        • http://www.Nave360.com Sebastian Gorgon

In reality it's not free... it's however much you pay for Xbox live gold
          Sent from my Nexus 7

        • droozilla

Complaints about not working with android tablets are VERY valid, when it works on every other platform.

    • Anson

How to do the trick using the two apps? Plz help!

It's not smartglass that doesn't work on the nexus it's the installer in google play I think. People are hosting the apk on dropbox, so, to get it working: search for smartglass apk posts in chrome on your nexus, find a link to ...artglass.apk and click on it -- installed fine on my nexus - just about to find out if it can connect to my xbox... makes you wonder if google were being nasty! surely not ;-)

  • ian r

yep smartglass works fine on my nexus 7 - just download the apk

  • wtx757

Downloaded the apk works great on N7 this is brilliant

  • Nathan J

So, should I dump "My Xbox Live" since I've got this? It seems to have the social features as well, making the former app redundant. However, I think Gingerbread users can use "My Xbox Live".

  • Wimpiam

No support on Incredible 2... Which HTC promised 4.0 on over two months ago... Upset to say the least.

  • Cherokee4Life

I would pay $50 for this app... OH MY GOSH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • JG

"UPDATE: Looks like SmartGlass requires Android 4.0 or higher... but is oddly not compatible with the Nexus 7. Hopefully the Big M will sort this out sooner rather than later"

OK, apparently I'm becoming too much a Android fanboy... I read "the Big M" to mean Moto... It took me a few seconds of trying to figure out why Moto would have to figure something out to get it to work on a ASUS tablet...

  • SpectroBR

Works great on the N7 after side loading the apk. And it got my hopes up for Win touch devices, Metro/Modern UI is actually quite usable.

  • Daniel

Is the LG Thrill just not supported? even though it has android 2.2 (froyo) ?

  • Adrian

Not available for my galaxy s. Wack

  • NAME

    What about Gingerbread???

  • Tim

I had a tablet and phone both running 4.0.3 and I cannot install it on either, is there something I am missing?

  • nathan carter

When will there be support for the droid dna?

  • Nathan carter

  • Rodgeriego
