If you head over to this URL right now, you'll land on a signup page to get an invitation for a new version of Google Wallet. Yep, Wallet is doing something big. And we're not sure what, but we fully expect it to be announced very soon (like, today). The landing page suggests the new Wallet will support multiple mobile platforms - including iOS - not just Android. Take a look:

Yeah, we're excited, too. We'll keep you updated as we learn more.

please let me experience the glory of nfc payments sometime soon.

  • http://twitter.com/redbullcat Phil Oakley

Just requested an invite and I'm in the UK. Hope this *finally* launches here.

    • Aaron Huffman

      Yeah, tell me about it.

      • http://twitter.com/redbullcat Phil Oakley

Wait...don't you live in the US? :P

        • Aaron Huffman

Yeah, but I hear about countries elsewhere being left out of a bunch of stuff and, I feel bad for that.

iOS has no NFC which leads me to believe they are going to do something like Passbook in addition to NFC payments.

    • lbrfabio

I guess it could be related to online payments like Paypal. There was some rumour I think about this

      • RedPandaAlex

Wallet already does this for commercial sites. If you use Google Shopper, you can filter by stores that accept Wallet as a form of payment. I've taken to using it more than Amazon. But yeah, they might be adding peer-to-peer payments.

        • Jameslepable

also a local pizza place near me accepts google wallet. It was awesome as well because google knows my address so it was like one click delivery.

    • JG

There was talk about having person-to-person transfers - so I could pay my mate the $15 I owe through Google Wallet... They may opt to use email addresses as a means of transferring funds, along with NFC "bumps"...

  • Danny Holyoake

Still likely US-only, but any improvement is good. :)

Are you half retarted? Google wallet works any where in CANADA PERFECTLY
stupid fool. I hate ppl that dont do there research before they open there big stupid mouths.

      • Isaac Waller

Sorry, you are wrong (as much as I would like you to be correct):

        - Google Wallet was never supported in Canada, but it was modded so the Prepaid Card would work in Canada (unofficially)
        - Google shut down this mod over 2 months ago

      • DuncanPerkins

Hey buddy you guys are only allowed to be assholes on XDA. Doesn't fly anywhere else.

        • Timothy Bennett

This. I used to post my stuff on XDA and I can tell you first hand the community is horrible over there

      • billybob thorton

I don't know but you just went full retard. Never go full retard.

Wow, I signed up as soon as I saw it and I thought it was old and I refreshed the page here and, there is an article!

I'm not sure if they'll announce anything today given that they already have an event planned for next week..

  • http://profiles.google.com/flamesbladeflcl Flame Blade

signed up! woo. always wanted to use it but don't have nfc on my phone.

    • Aaron Huffman

I've had NFC but never a chance to use it like this.

  • tom

I guess the new system will not rely of NFC

maybe it will finally work ouside of us? ;)

Perhaps the rumored iPad mini will have NFC. And I bet they will call it revolutionary.

    • http://codytoombs.wordpress.com/ Cody Toombs

It's known that Apple is not buying up significant quantities of NFC hardware (and it's unlikely they will manufacture it themselves). Additionally, most people 'in the know' are saying that NFC will be launched with the iPhone where it's significantly more useful. It's pretty much a certainty that the iPad Mini (iPad "Air" seems to be the new rumor), if launched as expected, will not have NFC. I'm pretty sure this will be a Passbook app similar to the Starbucks app (or what the upcoming Paypal update) includes.

Speaking logically and just breaking down the basics. Would Google be teaming up with Apple to announce Google Wallet on iOS? Would Apple really launch an NFC payment system on a tablet? Would Apple even launch a proximity-based tech on a tablet...keeping in mind that they still don't even put GPS into the wifi-only model?

As a bonus footnote, a few people claiming to be experts have been quoted as saying that the iPhone 5 is too thin for NFC antennas to function properly alongside the other components. Forgive me, I don't really believe it and the explanations I've seen don't seem credible, but that's the story. The thing that makes it interesting, if Apple sticks to the pattern, the iPhone 5S will be the same size and that might also preclude NFC, meaning that the iPhone won't have NFC for at least 2 years. Again, I don't really believe the claim, but it does make the speculation a little more interesting.

  • Ryuuie

I never got that page. Maybe I'm un-special.

    I did sign up though!

    • http://elder-tylers-blog.com/ pache71

I didn't either but I am assuming thats because I have android device registered to my account?

      • Ryuuie

I think that may be the reason since I have a Nexus S 4G.

        • Ulrik Djurtoft

I have a Galaxy Nexus, but I still had the page. I am from Denmark though.

          • http://elder-tylers-blog.com/ pache71

I had a Galaxy Nexus and didn't have the page but I am in the US so who knows!

      • Ben Baranovsky

I got to the page and I'm using Google Wallet on a Galaxy Nexus in the US with the same email that I'm logged into on my computer, so it's strange that some people aren't seeing it.

  • http://them3blog.wordpress.com/ Abel

    :O looking toward to it

  • John O’Connor

    and now we wait

  • Derek Duncan

why do you assume/expect it to be announced TODAY?!

  • Wineaux

I'm just hoping they'll give us a nice little present for signing up early, or that they'll run a special one time deal as soon as it goes live. :D

  • Ulrik Djurtoft

Just signed up from Denmark, hopes this means they are opening it for international customers :-D

    • Imparus

      We can hope :)

    • Bleakvision

If this rollout is as fast as the Play Store, we should have it by 2020:(

    • masih A. Balouch

I really hope other phones with nfc will be able to get that. :/

  • QwietStorm

I've never paid too much attention to it, but what exactly is the purpose of Google wallet? Is it like a PayPal in your pocket?

    • http://cassidyjames.com Cassidy James

Tap-to-pay with your phone. Like, anywhere that accepts those MasterCard PayPass cards or whatever accepts Google Wallet.

      • QwietStorm

Oh ok thanks. I don't even see many of those paypass things anywhere though. I wonder how seriously Google wants to move forward with theirs.

  • Ben Baranovsky

What makes you think that it will be announced today? Tell me what you know! :p

  • http://www.facebook.com/nikhilkaduskar Nikhil Kaduskar

I think Google has listed iOS only to later send them an email saying, "Sorry, you need to use an Android phone to use Wallet!"

That would be freakin' evil and freakin' hilarious! :D

    • Dominic Powell

Oh how I wish this happens. But seriously if it gets on iOS and is adopted very well I am all for it. The better Google does , the better android does.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=207600011 Mike Booth

Google, please bring this to the UK! I'll let you have my bank details. You LOVe knowing my personal information.

  • http://www.williamint.com William Aleman

A good idea to pay is using secure QR codes generated at the POS, this way you get the security that it only works with scanning the code or swiping the phone.

  • Levi Wilcox

Pretty sure this will be a mobile payment system where you can accept and send mobile payments.

  • Guest

Launch in German and PayPal! PayPal!!! Please!

  • Jamie

Roll out to other countries with your mobile platform before adding rival!

  • disc order

They're going to copy Liqpay (Liquid payments) in Ukraine where westerners can use their cards to upload funds then transfer to whoever they want. I give it a couple of months until it's fully frauded out completely and they end up like Liqpay, putting low restrictions and arbitrarily seizing accounts that get too many funds in a certain time period.

Please allow it on every NFC-equipped phone on every carrier *crosses fingers and toes*

    • Jon Garrett

  • http://codytoombs.wordpress.com/ Cody Toombs

One annoying thing, you're only allowed to sign up for one OS. Obviously I signed up for Android, but I've got something from everybody laying around. I'd like to have seen notifications for each of them.

    • Yanosh Cerovcevic

I'm almost 100% sure when the notification for one arrive, all will be available. This means getting notified for one means getting notified for all. I think they just separated them to get the point across that they're starting to support other devices and something new is coming.

      • http://codytoombs.wordpress.com/ Cody Toombs

That makes a lot of sense, but I kinda think they might be doing it to play it safe. I'm pretty sure they'll try to release to as many platforms at the same time as they can, but if something falls behind schedule, they will save those people for later.

I'm pretty sure they are going to also theme the emails for each platform. If you're signed up to iOS, the included images will have the proper branding, imagery, link to iTunes, and instructions to install and use. Same for Android, with a graphic of Andy, link to Play Store, and warnings that your carrier might block the app (I hope I'm just making a joke).

  • Michael Sheils

The signup page works in the Uk, please let that be a hint at something wonderful.

  • Bloodflame87

here we are 3 days later, still nothing... i have a feeling we'll hear something on monday
