It truly is update season as Google gets all its Nexus devices up to date prior to the presumed announcement of 4.2 at the event later this month. Today an update to 4.1.2 has started to reach the Takju variant of the Galaxy Nexus, and you don't have to wait if you don't want to.

Before you get too excited, your device is only compatible with this update if it meets the following criteria:

  • Your device is the Takju version of the Galaxy Nexus. This is the GSM Nexus being sold in the Play Store, not the European GSM Nexus.
  • Your device must be running the last stock update, version JRO03C. The new update file will only install over top of this build.

The OTA will likely reach all devices in the coming week or so, but you can manually get the update installed by grabbing the file from the link below. There are different ways to get this done depending on the status of your bootloader and recovery, but remember ADB sideloading is now possible. Check out the extensive thread over at XDA to find the method that works best for your situation. As usual, make a backup before you proceed, and don't come to us if you break something.

Guys just check update and it will be there. I was surprised to see it on my first try. Also when I updated the calendar app updated by itself with the new icon and the Play Store updated to the version that was let out last week. I just waited for it instead of getting the APK from here.

    Pretty Sweet.

I installed this from the factory images when they were released. I'll never get another Android phone that isn't a Nexus. How long do you think everyone else (who isn't a custom ROM flasher) is going to have to wait before the manufacturers make this update available to the carriers who then have to approve it?

Got it about 30 mins ago ... the funny thing is that I got this update 4 days ago on my Wifi Xoom and now after 4 days on my GNEX!

Hi, its possible flash you phone with the Google Factory Image and change from yakjuxw (unknown country) to the USA version "takju" (with Google Wallet) or the european version "yakju". The Galaxy Nexus GT-I9250 GSM/HSPA+ hardware is called "maguro" its the same sales in the world, only the Verrizon Wireles its diferent hardware called CDMA/LTE "toro".

Good idea. I'll think about it when we'll get a major version that wiping my data will actually worth it. Thanks.

    Dear Google,

For the next Nexus variants, please tell us which sub-variant will be updated first.

    Yours truly,
    An "Always-the-last" Nexus S i9020A user.
    P.S. - A comes before T, right?

If you don't like wait, i write a tutorial for flashing with the Google Factory Image in spanish (auto-translate to english for you) here http://angelcontents.blogspot.com/2012/09/samsung-galaxy-nexus-gt-i9250-google.html the tutorial explain how to install the Jelly Bean to 4.1.1 and using the same for 4.1.2 for "yakju" (for european) or "takju" (for USA with Google Wallet).
