Last Updated: October 13th, 2013

Google just started rolling out an updated Google Play Store version 3.9.16 that follows the previous version 3.8.17 from August. Good news, everyone - we've already got our hands on the APK for you to install manually thanks to our loyal tipsters.

What's New

The most notable and immediately apparent new feature is the long overdue ability to remove apps you've previously downloaded from the All Apps list. If you like to try a lot of apps, that list is likely very cluttered. With the new Google Play, you can trim it to your heart's content.

Update #1: You can multi-select by long-pressing any app in the list and then tapping more apps, then delete them all in one go (added 2 new screenshots demonstrating it).

Update #2: The new Play Store now keeps track of your location in lists, including My Apps and All Apps, so when you click into an app and back, it drops you into the same spot. I had variable luck with this, and it didn't seem to work in All Apps at first, but I just reproduced it on both the EVO LTE and the Nexus 7. Brilliant.

Update #3: The notification icon that shows up when you have app updates has changed, and notifications are now expandable. I've added more screenshots showing the differences.

Update #4: The notification icon after installing an app now shows the app icon instead of something generic.

The size of the Play Store APK actually went down, so Google must have trimmed some extra fat. We're still digging through everything - in the meantime, check out the screenshots and grab the new version from our mirrors.

It's almost like Google is actually listening to what people are saying!?!?

  • Tíghearnán Carroll

Notification icon in the status bar when you update an app has changed also.

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Has it? Mine was always a down arrow, I think. Am I remembering wrong?

      • scuttlefield

We're referring to the notification for when updates are available it now looks like a shopping bag with the play symbol on the side. The notification that your download is complete looks like this now, as well.

        • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Indeed, the description of which icon was ambiguous - I saw the right one now.

      • Shane

If you have any kind of custom skin or theme applied that changes that icon I think it will remain the same as it has been until that specific customization is updated

        • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

That wasn't it the problem - I was talking about a different icon. I found the right one now.

    • scuttlefield

Just noticed that myself. Also the notification is now expandable.

  • Sven Enterlein

No problems here with the TF101 on RaymanFX's CM10 JB ROM. Thanks for the d/l links!

  • Kaero

FINALLY! I'll have to sort through over 2 years of downloading apps and remove 90% of everything!

  • Jura

  • Oh come on

Yet it doesn't store my location in the list so I have to scroll through 500+ apps to get back where I was after every removal. ffs Google.

    • http://www.facebook.com/archercc Ryan Stewart

Yeah, not the best but at least its something. What I would rather do is just hit it in the play store, then have it propagate.

    • tanknspank

Stores my location now just fine

      • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Works for me in My Apps, but not in All Apps. How about you?

        • tanknspank

          Fine in both + searches

        • tanknspank

Uploaded a video. Processing, but should done soon I guess.

Works throughout the app for me.

          • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Ha, you're right. It didn't work at first, now it does. And worked right away on the N7.

          • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Can you fix your title? It's 3.9.16, not 3.19.6.

          • tanknspank

Haha must have went dyslexic for a moment there. It's fixed.

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Can you please test this functionality in My Apps?

      • Oh come on

It works fine in both lists when I view or install an app but removing one or multiple apps from the All apps list throws me back to the top.

        • tanknspank

Ah, now this I can say the same for. Misunderstood. It kicks me to the top after removing apps in there also.

  • calvinnbs

If you remove a paid app from My Apps and change your mind do you need too pay for it again?

    • efan

one would think that google would still have a record of the purchase. i think it'll just not show up on your list. dont quote me on it. but that would just be silly beyond belief if they made you pay for it again.

    • lbrfabio

I don't think so. this just remove apps from the list "installed apps".

      • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

        This sounds right.

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Good question. Want to try it out? :)

      • Chris Guanche

Unrelated, but I noticed that the notification icon changed when an app is updated or an update is available. It now shows the Play Store shopping bag logo for both.

        • Guest

Also, it's expandable when ther'e multiple updates (in JB ofc).

    • Simon Belmont

I was wondering this too. Also, does it change the list for all of your devices using the same Google account?

Frankly, I don't see myself ever removing a paid app. I'd only remove an app from the list if I knew for certain that I'd never want to install it again in the future, otherwise I'd leave it be.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000003999549 Mike Harris

Thank you, this is great! Not only can you remove them right from the list (without having to open each app's info page), you remove multiple apps by long-pressing one and selecting additional apps.

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Just discovered that too and updated the post. Thanks!

  • http://www.androidpolice.com/author/ron-amadeo/ Ron Amadeo

Teardown in progress, new stuff discovered, article forthcoming.

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

      Hell yeah!

      • rambo

Am I missing something? I cannot see the option to see purchased apps only???

        • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

          It's not in there.

        • Milind

If you use Firefox, you could install this GeaseMonkey script to do that for you on the desktop.

I use the desktop for browsing through the Play Store anyway and mostly install apps directly from the web.

What I couldn't find, is a way to remove apps from the web. It would be significantly faster than doing it from the phone or tablet.

    • Danny Holyoake

      oh my god yes.

    • http://twitter.com/redbullcat Phil Oakley

    • Gav456

Have you found the "legacy" feature in there that let you list only apps you have purchased that aren't currently installed? Good knows why they removed it, but I wants it back!

      • http://www.androidpolice.com/author/ron-amadeo/ Ron Amadeo

      • Whore

That is a HORRIBLY needed feature. It pisses me off having to go through my entire download history to try and find stuff i bought two years ago but dont remember what the name is.

  • eric

Can't find the delete function on nexus 7.

  • http://twitter.com/deMes2Boules deMes2Boules

No mais lol Google. Trim a list that contain more than 1000 apps. Give us back the list of apps we paid for.

  • Niv

The notification for available updateshas also changed. It is now expandable to view the list of apps that have updates. Ive waited for this since first getting jelly bean :-)

  • br_hermon

Ok, here's a question I have. Is customizing this list unique to each device or account? I've got two android devices, each I use regularly. There are some apps on my one device I want listed but others I don't and vice versa for the other device.

    • coversnails

The list syncs across multiple devices, remove an app from the list on one device and it'll be gone from the other too

  • Casey Jones

Wish they would have added a batch mode to select the apps I want to update instead of having to update all

  • jnt

dangit... had like 100 selected to clear out, sat my phone down for a second, it went into landscape then back... reset all of it :S

  • coversnails

Removing apps from the All list also removes them from showing on the play store website under "other apps in my library" at play.Google.com/apps

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001144455023 Michael J Carroll

Does this work with Jelly Bean?

    • http://twitter.com/redbullcat Phil Oakley

      Why wouldn't it?

    • akoli

I would seriously hope so ... works on my ainol fire ICS and nexus JB 4.1.1...although cant see batch select as soon as I click on it give a pop up to remove then goes back to the top of the list ... will clear data etc and see how it goes

  • Hugo

it's no good at all, it's only on the device itself, nothing is synced to the account or to other devices so if I do it 5 times then I'll loose all the work when I wipe a phone or tablet. And the Play website still has all of them and I can't even see them all, they're listed alphabetically and I can only scroll to the apps starting with D! Bummer, tell me again when it's available on the website.

    • Kernschatten

Yeah, I have the same problem. Although I can scroll to the apps starting with M.

    • coversnails

It is synced to your account, and removing them from the list also removes them from the website.

  • Drayon

I've also noticed that when a new app is installed it shows the icon of the app in the notification bar, and not the old market icon.

    • Lien Wee Hoo

      Mine doesn't show (Xoom JB4.1.1)

      • akoli

choose all apps tab opposed to installed... then you'll find a little icon on the top right of each app not installed to enable you to remove from the list. ... long press doesnt work for me though just gives me option to tick or remove when you press tick nothing happens and the list refreshes. !!! I dont get the icons of the apps in the notification bar though just the standard plat symbol same as you.

  • meetloaf13

I get a bad signature message when trying to install. CM10 Nightly

  • br_hermon

Word to the wise.... don't multi-select too many at a time or you lose the ability to remove them all at once (don't yet know the max number) and don't let your phone change orientation or you'll lose your selections too.

    • coversnails

Its probably because you multiselected an installed app. They can't be removed from the list but can be selected when in batch mode.

    • http://twitter.com/jordanlong20 Jordan Long

I selected a 'system app' (Cordy, which is a pre-installed game) and the delete box went away, I then tapped again to remove from multi select and the ability to delete came back.

  • meetloaf13

"An existing package by the same name with a conflicting signature is already installed" when trying to install?

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Did you install a modified Play Store - one not signed by Google?

      • meetloaf13

Yeah, I'm thinking that is what happened. I installed a "dark themed" gapps, the play store must be different.

  • coversnails

You can't remove an installed app from the All list, but if you have two devices and the app is only installed on one you can remove the app from the list on the device which doesn't have it installed and it'll be gone on the other too.

  • root4life

Notifications now shows the app icon after installing an app

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

      Nice spot!

  • jnt

It seems to sync up fine if you clear data and restart the market on your other device. I removed an app on my phone with the new market. Cleared data / restarted *old* market app on my N7, and it worked perfectly.

  • QwietStorm

If you remove an app from a list, is it as per device or your account?

    • Himmat Singh

      Your whole account.

  • Max Barlow

  • IncCo

Will installing this .apk mess up future google play updates ?

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

No, it's the same one that will roll out if you don't do anything. It doesn't affect future updates.

      • IncCo

        Thank you

  • Guest

Not able to multi-select apps. Rebooted phone and cleared data but no go.

  • Falconator

Not able to multi-select even after reboots and clearing data.

  • dapbmonkey4u

Is the multiple select for deleting the app from All list ICS only? I am on GB on my Thunderbolt and I cannot select multiple apps by long pressing and then selecting other apps. TIA

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Based on complaints from GB owners, looks like it is not there in GB.

  • Freak4Dell

Awesome. I guess I now have two projects...delete a bunch of apps from this list, and upload new contact pictures. I just wish they would let us delete the apps from the web version.

  • Jon Garrett

I want 2 things for the playstore.

    1. automatic download of my apps to my desktop and or device
    2. the ability to delete devices I no longer have.

    • Himmat Singh

No. 2 can be done for some time already. You just need to go to the Google Play website, and at the bottom click on 'devices and settings'.

      • moelsen8

that doesn't completely get rid of it though. it hides it.

      • Jon Garrett

you cant delete devices, only hide them--and sometimes they even come back.

  • http://about.me/bkbooth Benjamin Booth

A little bit of Android ambiguity with the multi-select before removing from the All Apps list... I went through all of my apps and selected the apps I wanted to remove (which took a fair while!), but then looking up at the two icons, did the tick icon mean "yes, remove these" or "done removing", and did the crossed circle mean "remove these" or "deselect all"? In hindsight it should have been obvious but I made the wrong decision "in the heat of the moment" and I'm a fairly tech savvy developer kinda guy. The average user might be confused by this, though the average user might never actually find this. FYI, tick is "done removing", crossed circle is "remove these".

  • Airdawg

Finally! I can remove all those one-time-testing apps that were cluttering my apps list. And the beautiful thing is: those apps are also removed from My Android Apps on their site.

  • EstRivera

I dont have that wish list that you guys showed last update. Is that something only some phones have and not others? I have EVO 3D w/ ICS

    • Kahroo

Do you not have it still? I'm on a EVO 3D w/ICS and I don't have it either

      • EstRivera

        Nope still nothing.

      • EstRivera

It just started working for me today. Finally.

  • qbking77

How to manually update and review:

  • Alex Dzwill

    Where is batch install?!

  • Himmat Singh

Wow, much appreciated! I can finally remove all the unwanted apps from my history list. However, the Update #3 and 4 don't seem to be the case on my tablet running ICS. Maybe its a JB-only feature?

    • Guest

Actually, #3 works, but I only get the 'play' icon in a bag. No extra bag in the background. This is the same icon that shows when I finish installing/updating as well.

  • akash

Anyone have modded version for country and device restrictions

  • Nigel Wong

Not exactly impressed... still cannot display all the purchased apps... and what if I removed a purchased app from the list??? how am i gonna remember???

  • Mike

How did you get all those toggle widgets at the top of your notification area in the phone screenshot?

  • Abhigyan Banerjee

I'd like to know how the notifications work after all apps have been updated. Is it still the real estate hogging, one notification per app? Or do they collapse into one expandable notification?

On an average day, I get 7/8 app updates, and the notification shade on my One X becomes a mess.

  • TY

You can now unfreeze apps in the All Apps page.

  • http://www.anglaispod.com/ bucketachicken

Wow, this is an amazing update. How nerdy must I (we) be that a market (play store? blech) update gets me (us) this excited...?

Oh, question: what happens if you remove a purchased app from My Apps? Is it "unpurchased" ? Or does it stay purchased just not show up in the list?

  • Aman Yajurvedi

There are some very very pleasant news being posted about Android everyday. Is El'Goog prepping for something big, or are these little(but much wanted things) the upgrade?

    • Philipp Koschinski

I think they're preparing for Android 4.2 which is expected to be released in November 2012.

  • Sarang Pitale

Does google silently push the google play updates to devices? If yes, how do we know whether an update is available and/or was already installed. Notification for availability of Google Play update should have been an inherent feature.

  • http://btwnworlds.tumblr.com/ Lou G

I find I always have to download the apk of the playstore to get it to update. I find this odd, but meh. I love knowing to do that too (I came from iOS where we didn't have this option.)

If you are running a ROM with Sense, the multi-select doesn't work. I flashed a non-sense ROM, used the multiselect to clear out my listings, and then reflashed my Sense ROM. So it's not HTC phones per se, it's the Sense part of it.

I never did see the multiple remove "All apps" option, and it doesn't seem to work in version 3.10.10 - did they take it out again?!? Can I put this old version over the top just so I can spend the day clearing out my All apps list? I have far too much crud in there to be able to bear doing it one at a time with a return to the top of the paged list each time.

I would have posted this on the 3.10.10 page but comments are closed there...

Some people are asking for a "Purchased apps" list. You will be pained to hear that is what "All apps" USED TO BE!! It originally only listed purchased apps, and only later got swamped with all the free sh*t you now wish you'd skipped over at the time!

Really Google. If a feature is worth implementing (something you apparently disagreed with for many years) then it is worth implementing WELL. Oh, and when people are blogging about how great this long-awaited feature is, please do NOT remove it on the next update?

You are not "evil" Google. But you are arrogant crap-heads.

    Great new Google
Play Mail App, it's called Ark Mail App and you can find at
http://www.ark.com. Ark.com is for anyone who is frustrated with the standard
mail app. Super useful in terms of sending Dropbx attachments, and searching
for your contacts social media account links.
