Sprint has some presents for you, especially if you live in the midwest. For starters, several cities are getting their shiny new LTE networks lit up today including Wichita, KS, Waukegan-Lake County, IL and more (listed below). As an added bonus, the #3 carrier also announced that the Network Vision rollout is beginning in Chicago, New York City, and Los Angeles. For those who are unaware, the Network Vision plan provides for significant improvements to the existing 3G infrastructure, in addition to eventual LTE upgrades.

Here's the list of markets that will see LTE activated in their area:

Lawrence, KS
Topeka, KS
Wichita, KS
Waukegan-Lake County, IL
Barnstable-Hyannis/Mid-Cape, MA

It's not a huge rollout, but the improvements to the 3G network in Chicago, NYC, and LA should be welcome as Sprint makes ready LTE coverage in those cities. Who knows? Maybe the Now Network can manage to pull this off yet.

And yet again, the 5th largest metro city in the country (Phoenix) gets ignored.

    • Agam720

Yep, not even a head nod. If they would even say "phoenix is in our list cities to be upgraded in the future" I would consider staying with them. As of now though, I plan on jumping ship come mid October.

Will say this. When the LTE is active man its nice, though honestly the handoff and battery usage is pretty badass to boot.

  • DavidKeith

Psh, Chicago doesn't have anything yet...

wheres omaha/lincoln nebraska that's 2 1/2 hours away from kansas city..
also you lit up puerto rico before all the bigger cities in the 48 states... something is wrong with that...

Don't get the whole buzz about Sprint LTE. I live in Dallas and own and own an SG3. First, that sprínt LTE is useless. If you are lucky enough to get a 3G sìgnal wìth Sprìnt, that wIll be Xmas for you. Talk less of LTE sìgnal. Then the SG3, radIo on that thIng Is useless. Everythìng about samsung and Sprínt ís a míss road..

Just ran a speed test in Santa Clara, CA this morning (right by the beating heart of silicon valley) and I have 0.25 mbps down and 0.55 up. Enjoy my contract while it lasts Sprint, I'll be moving over to T-Mobile as soon as the next Nexus phone is released.

C'MON SPRINT BRING LTE TO THE STEEL CITY!!! PITTSBURGH!!!

  • nexgencpu

woohoo my net went from .25k/s to 1500k/s NV upgrades are going to be sweet! once completed!

SPRINT FAIL for the frightening preview image on the video. If your marketing department can't figure out how to get the youtube thumbnail generator to give you something less awful, fire them all and hire somebody with a clue.

I'm told the Network Vision upgrades have been done near me, but what I'm seeing in terms of speed increases aren't impressive. When I disable my AIRAVE Access Point, my signal bars drop from full to about 1, and my 3G speedtest returns 0.14Mbps DOWN and 0.15Mbps UP with a 114ms Ping.

If these upgrades are "visionary", Sprint needs a new vision and fast. Of course, to be fair, earlier speeds could be as low as 0.01Mbps DOWN & UP, so I guess 0.14 and 0.15 are vast improvements; they're just not the type of improvements expected given all this hype. Also areas that had strong signal now seem to be bad. I've begun to wonder if Sprint is cannibalizing some stronger towers to address long-standing signal deficits on others. Finding that out would be problematic and a telltale sign of infrastructure problems at Sprint-Nextel.

The clock is ticking, as I've given an ultimatum of December 31 for substantially improved signal or I jump ship. Any confidence I have that Sprint can meet this deadline is eroding on a daily basis.

I have full confidence that they will fail to meet your deadline.

I just watched the video and have to comment. Specifically when VP John DuPree states (at 1:05), "Well, our 3G services are already doing very well". Really, John? Have you used your Sprint 3G phone in anywhere of the country lately outside of the Sprint campus? 3G speeds under 1Mbps is NOT my definition of DOING VERY WELL. In reality, your 3G services have tanked in many areas since the addition of the iPhone to your network. I've been on Sprint during that transition and service rates have dropped precipitously ever since. Time to stop drinking the purple kool-aid, John.

so... why does it update Kansas and Illinois, the two boring states bordering MO, which has STL in it and no love of LTE...?

    • MeCampbell30

      Sprint HQ is in Kansas.

  • John O’Connor

With all these individuals threatening to jump ship, I suppose my service will dramatically improve when they leave for another carrier

  • Freak4Dell

So what are we at now...12 towers that have LTE?

  • DCMAKER

seriously people stop bitching....sprint has a long way to go and is slowly making improvements. The fact that they are the cheapest and offer the best overall package is good enough for me. They will eventually get there act together so fuck off. Chicago doesn't even have LTE yet and its the 2nd or 3rd largest city so STFU with all this blah blah 5th biggest city. 3G in Chicago is horrible. In Aurora I can't even look up a webpage...not joking it is worse than a 56k modem...its like a baud 1200 or whatever that was in the 80s(i think). When I was in Camp Lejeune it was like 20-50KBps but after network vision it jumped to 3MBps than dropped to 1.5MBps it was awesome to have usable 3g! I'll patiently wait with the lesser evil of the Big 4. I'll be damned the time I ever switch to AT&T or Verizon. I despise those companies far more than Sprint. So again STFU with your bitching....seriously you are worse than little high school girls...holy fuck.

This VP just said that the current 3G service was in his own words doing VERY WELL. Is this guy on the same planet as the rest of us. I am living in a Suburb of Boston where on their coverage map I am in the strongest data area for 3G, My download speeds at night after 10:00 pm do not even see 600 kilabits, during the day they go as high as 200 kilabits and that is all bars on my phone lit up. That is the worst service imaginable. For the VP of Sprint to say that on camera shows you how stupid he thinks Joe public is. This guy is a complete ass. What a freaken joke Sprint has turned out to be. I am completely disgusted, Ask me how I really feel.
