Hey, guess what? After about 18 hours as a Release Candidate, Chameleon Launcher for Android tablets is now available in its full v1.0 glory. That's right, it's no longer beta.

image

It has been a twisty, turny, windy, and other non-straight words journey for Chameleon, so it's nice to see the launcher hit its first full release. According to the Chameleon Blog, there are still a few kinks to be worked out (which makes me question the "final" release status), but hopefully that'll happen relatively quickly.

If you backed Chameleon on Kickstarter, you should be able to grab the app from the Play Store now. The rest of us, though, will have to shell out a cool $10.26 for the launcher.

    dat price :

  • http://www.Nave360.com Sebastian Gorgon

    Wouldn't even pay $5 for a launcher,

    • fixxmyhead

what about 4$? would that sweeten the deal cuz thats what i paid for apex

      • http://www.Nave360.com Sebastian Gorgon

Yeah i would go for that, considering i already use it

        • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

So $5 is too much for something you'd use every day but $4 is OK? I don't buy that. I understand if you said you wouldn't pay $5 for *this* launcher though.

          • http://www.Nave360.com Sebastian Gorgon

Mainly because there is no try before you buy, who in their right mind would pay $10 for something without trying it first, and no refund option here isn't good enough, you need to play with it for at least a day, and since i use apex free $4 isn't bad

          • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

So again, you mean for this launcher, because it doesn't have a trial, plus it's $10. If you tried it for free and loved it, you'd pay $5, right?

          • http://www.Nave360.com Sebastian Gorgon

Well $5 yes, if i liked it, but defiantly not $10

          • http://thedangerbrain.com/ Alfonso Surroca

If I tried it for free and loved it, I would gladly pay $10. But without a trial version to see if I DO love it, I'm just not willing to pay that price.

        • fixxmyhead

so 1$ makes a big difference lol

      • Hal Motley

I rate the £2.50 I spent on Apex to be one of the best purchases I made in the entire Play store.

  • http://twitter.com/GitMuny Jimmy Rustles

IT'S 10 BUCKS? Woah. I understand the immense amount of work that has gone into this but damn its just a launcher, it doesn't really change the whole operating system. Too bad I can't really imagine most people being willing to spend 10 bucks on a launcher.

    • b_to_the_randon

In fairness it's as close to "change the whole operating system" as you can get without actually, y'know, changing the whole operating system.

      • DavidKeith

        VERY true!

  • http://www.facebook.com/kam.w.siu Kam Siu

wow...10 bucks?? at least release a demo version...

  • thistimearound

I backed this project during Kickstarter. And I like it. But now that I have it I can say, I wouldn't pay $5 again for it, and I certainly wouldn't pay $10. Take that fwiw.

    • Knlegend1

      Thanks

      • DavidKeith

I backed it and have been using the incremental updates. But it was not my default launcher by any means.

For what it can do now I would never pay $10 for it. For what it can do now I would never pay $5 for (or $4).

I have seen how they have progressed and how quickly they pump out update and add widgets. So with that in mind I can see them adding a LOT more widgets soon and once the community makes their own it will be well worth $10 I think. They need to find a way to enable a search field in the widget menu to search for community built widgets <-- that would be Epic

  • Lox_knc

$10 to have a launcher not compatible with android widgets ? No thanks.

    • NexusKoolaid

If Chameleon won't work with my existing widgets, that renders the $10 I've paid for the various widgets i own useless. Barring suitable replacements, this raises my effective cost of running this launcher to the $20 range. I'll pass for now.

      • Hal Motley

There needs to be some means of providing a compatibility layer for non-Chameleon widgets. Because without it, that's going to be a no deal for a lot of Android users.

  • Androinerd

I am a backer, and I am still waiting for the phone version that is expected.

  • http://www.nerdshowandtell.com nerdshowandtell.com

So regular widgets don't work with this, and they want to charge $10.26 for it? Thats not a very good incentive to 1. buy it.. 2. developers to make widgets for it. Price is going to hurt adoption and in turn kill the launcher.

  • Tyler Chappell

LOL, $10.26? What? Was $9.99 just too low? No thanks, I will happily pass. If I want a skin that is incompatible with some basic core functionality of Android, I'll buy a Kindle Fire.

  • cynic

Tomorrows news flash...chameleon free due to rampant pirating :p

    • GazaIan

Chameleon uses server side verification (and a serious one at that) so cracking it isn't likely. It'll definitely happen, but they would have already collected another $60K by the time it happens.

      • MAINEVENT23

Not exactly, just looked and the latest beta is already cracked. Doubt much has changed in the full release, so it should be floating around soon. :/

        • GazaIan

Meh. I support developers, unless they're dirty. I can't even really call these guys money hungry, they're running an entire development studio with workers, and I'm sure no building is free to live in. They could use the money.

        • DavidKeith

believe me each update these guys put out is pretty big!

  • imtoomuch

So they got over twice the amount of money that they were asking for on Kickstarter ($67,000 vs $30,000), but the app is still $10?! That's comical. Welcome to failure at that price!

  • http://www.facebook.com/alexslx Alexandre Leites

    $10 USD? What..............?

  • Abhisshek Das

i would rather pay for TSF Shelll Launcher than this shit which only works on Tablet

  • Abhisshek Das

10 USD without demo version. kiss my ass. piracy here i come. i use pirated TSF Shell launcher 1.6.1 and it was so good that i just buy the version 1.7. paying 16.80 USD for TSF Shell is more worth then this shit .

    • GazaIan

So, you pirated an app you never used, to but it for almost $17, but won't bother to or pirate this app (of whom's intention was to be for tablets only) that only costs $10? Wow.

      • Abhisshek Das

who says i would not use pirate versin of this one . i will but not soon but maybe later . i am very much impressed with TSF Shell currently which buy it after using the pirate version . if you dont believe Duh! do i really a damn you morons, eat your cracks just because i use some pirate apps does not means i dont buy apps . i brought over 80+ USD worth of Apps over 2 years. if you dont believe it i dont fucking cares

    • http://brgulker.wordpress.com/ brgulker

I'm not going to buy this, but screw you for pirating.

      • Abhisshek Das

who cares about your screwing me asshole and how would screw me jack ass.

      • Abhisshek Das

and you dont believe it Duh! who do you think you are , some really important person LOL ,do i really give a damn about you and your thinking moron

    • Eddie Amarille

i used "pirated" apps as my demos, specially when the price is ridiculous. i dont mind paying if it is good, but i have seen many paid apps in the play store that just couldnt live up to the hype

  • GazaIan

As much as some of you seem to resent the price, I went ahead and bought it anyway. My Galaxy Tab's screen is just way too boring for me to pass this up. Yeah, there's a lack of widgets, it's still buggy a bit, but I like it. Better than the the mess of a homescreen I had on the stock launcher, and better than a 5x4 gride of square icons.

  • GazaIan

Why is everyone saying the price is $10.26? There's no sort of tax on it, it's just a straight 10.

    • NexusKoolaid

You're just a little late to the party. When the news first broke the price was $10.26 (see the picture above). Yes, now it's an even 10.

  • http://brgulker.wordpress.com/ brgulker

This seems like a very strange pricing strategy to me.

If they priced it for $3-$4, where other launchers are priced, I'd be willing to guess that they'd get the 3-4 customers that they'll get at the $10 price point.

    30 people at $3 a piece of 3 people at $10 a piece.

    I'd go for the former.

    • http://twitter.com/Joecascio2000 Joseph Cascio

I thing Google's Policy states that an app can't be increased in price however it can be decreased. My guess is they are gonna get all the suckers to buy it for $10 first, then have some sort of 50% off sale and sell it for $5 racking in all the other suckers. Just my opinion cause I've seen it done before.

  • TechGuy21

i bought it , tried it and got refund.
will download a pirated version thank you very much. 10 freaking bucks
they made so much money on kickstart this should be 1.99 better yet .99 freaking cents,.

    • NexusKoolaid

Yes the price is steep, but how does not liking the price justify theft?

Your sense of entitlement defies logic.

      • TechGuy21

lol i always laugh at people like you who think downloading a pirated version of a software is stealing.
you have your logic and i have mine. we gonna to agree to disagree.

        • DavidKeith

You are not physically stealing an object.. You are stealing money that would have gone to the publisher or whom ever. You do understand that concept right? Because my 6 year old understand that if you take/use something that costs money without paying for it, it is a type of stealing..

If you do not see that, I would love to see what kind of world you live in.

          • TechGuy21

I'm not sure why you getting all butthurt buddy. Just because I don't want to spend my hard working money on a useless stuff you do know I did buy it right? . Again we have to agree to disagree on that. Oh I'm not 6 I'm 22.and I'm in college for computer science. I do know how to crack apk and stuff iI choose not too. I will download the pirated version when they improve the app who knows maybe if I like their improvement then I'd buy it (again)

          • DavidKeith

well a few pointers then if I may..

            1) If your 22 your probably what a junior or senior in college... I suggest you take a few more English courses, because nobody is going to take you seriously when you have bad punctuation and grammar that needs a major improvement.

            2) If you are majoring in Computer Science, then I you of all people should know how easy it is for people to track what other people do online. Torrents, Usenet all that crap is very easy to track.

            3) Your logic just doesn't make sense to me. You bought the app, didn't like it so you got a refund but you say once the developers make the app better you may download an illegal copy. So you "don't like" the current app but once it gets a few more update with a few more widgets you will get a pirated copy. Why did you even buy the app in the first place? Did you look at the screenshots or read the description?

            4) So you "know how to crack apk" but you are going to download an pirated apk and install it on your device. Since you are a Compute Science major do you see the flaw in that logic? Instead of doing something that is so much harder to track you decide you are going run the risk of downloading and installing?

            5) Put this whole argument aside and how we feel about pirated Apps.. You do know that according to quite a few governments it is ILLEGAL right?

          • spo22a

If your 22 your probably... "you're" and "you're"

          • DavidKeith

            touché

          • Abhisshek Das

@DavidKeith:disqus Hey Hypocrite moronic psycho. check your own grammar skill asshole. its "If you are 22 you are probably" not "your" go back to school little kid.

          • Abhisshek Das

also do you develop paid Android Apps . tell me the name of it. i will pirate it and freely distribute it throw BitTorrent . you try to track me, try to do what the fuck you can.

          • TechGuy21

I didn't know Android police had any rules stated "you should have perfect grammar while you typing online because if you don't some douchebag might bitch and moan about it" I don't see that anywhere here and yes I will buy it when the devs improve it. I do buy apps. I havee maybe 4 pirated apps the rest are I bought them. Titanium back up, rom manager, horn to name few. Anyway because you are too pussy to do it doesn't mean I have to be a pussy too. Illegal? So you gonna tell me you bought evry mp3s you have on your devices every movies every books. Never downloaded nothing "illegal", if so good sir, we need more people like you in the world.

          • DavidKeith

alright, I was to harsh on my reply. I was being a smart ass I will give you that.

Too pussy to do it? No. But when I was a freshmen in High School and downloading things off P2P site was "the cool thing" I knew a guy who got a letter in the mail from the government stating that they have proof he downloaded 5 movies from a P2P site and had to pay around $160,000 (I believe, don't quote me on that price). That single act steered me away from ever downloading things illegally.

Now that isn't to say I pay for every song I "have" I use things like Zune Music Pass which gets me unlimited music for a set price each month. And YES everyone I own a Zune and I love it haha.

          • TechGuy21

            Lol uh huh.
Problem is I don't do torrents. I hate them. I'm smart enough to know you can be tracked down easily using torrents. all my so called illegal downloads aren't from torrents they came from normal file sharing sites like mediafire rapid share and more. Be smart don't use torrents. Yuck.
And you got caught downloading stuff online. Mwahaha that's why you so mad when you see others doing so. :-P

          • DavidKeith

no no, I didn't get caught. I never did. A friend of mine got caught and it scared me from ever doing it.

          • Matti

People like you give Android users a bad name. Please leave.
I'm truly sad for your parents and the people that will hire you after college (unless you lied and never actually qualified for college, which is highly possible considering your retarded communication skills).

          • DavidKeith

:) well to get back on topic... I love Chameleon. So much so, I have the pre-order app and I am thinking about buying the "for everyone else" app to just support them.

          • jusatin

So you are not willing to spend your "hard working money" on an app, but you still want someone working hard to create the app, for free?

      • Abhisshek Das
        • NexusKoolaid

In the US software piracy in the US falls under the umbrella of US Copyright law Title 17 - i.e. it is a form of theft in the US. The source you cite presents an interesting point of view (which I happen to disagree with), but that point of view is NOT established law AFAIK (correct me if I'm wrong). I can't speak for other countries or regions, but at the end of the day the lack of specific legal classification of piracy doesn't change the fact that the rights and efforts of the authors are being abused without compensation.

          • Abhisshek Das

Fuck your Copyright law Title 17 . put it on you anal . do i give a damn about your disagreement nope, nada, nein neyt .

          • http://twitter.com/SoWhy Prof. Professorson

It might be defined by US LAW as "theft" but Abhisshek Das is - correctly - pointing out that "piracy" does not fit under the dictionary definition of "theft" because theft per definitionem requires the object in question to change owners.

  • duplissi

meh, still not interested in it.

  • http://www.talltechtales.com/ Mattias

Without a demo or some sort of trial, $10 really makes me hesitate. I've bought other launchers in the past *because* I was able to try a version with less features or something along those lines...for $10 with 15 minutes to test it...meh...that's tough...as it was pointed out elsewhere in these comments, considering that they raised more on Kickstarter than they had hoped, it seems a bit greedy to me. It's probably a pretty good piece of software and it sure looks darn nice but at this point, I'll be waiting a bit ...if I buy at all.

  • Himmat Singh

Not saying that I will pirate this, but at $10 this is sure gonna be the most pirated app for whatever's left of the year. They're calling for it I guess. Whatever 'server-side' verification that they have will be cracked by them pirates.

  • Ottavia Iphone

Hi guys, I just found this great iPhone app for the people who loves cricket ,It is an app about Cricket news and scores .Its an Awesome App to have .Pls check it out .Its free ..

    • DavidKeith

      really dude...

  • http://www.facebook.com/ShitizGarg Shitiz Garg

Really don't mind paying 10$ for the launcher, primarily because of it *not* supporting existing android widgets. They're completely gunning for a different experience which is pretty good and I like it.

  • onpoint G

DAMN that price scares me...sh** I gotta eat lol

  • http://twitter.com/SoWhy Prof. Professorson

7.86€ for a launcher without being able to actually test it before paying? Sorry, not for me

  • http://www.facebook.com/stephen.fronda Fronda Lishous

I'm kinda pissed because the customer service for this thing is terrible. I paid $10 for the preorder and haven't gotten a response as to why I don't have access. They said WITHIN 24 hours. Well 8 days later, no access, the app went LIVE, 3 emails and 2 tweets result in complete silence from them.
Worse than that? They've already charged me the $10...

  • Jay

They made big profits on kickstarter and now, greedily hit the play store at $10. Scum.
    They
should have said "Here you go
kickstarter donaters, here's half you're money back.. and here you go
PlayStore, $3.99 because we love Android and it's community.
At the limited state that it's at now is like spending $10 on the front cover of a comic book or magazine, looking glossy and cute... but lacking content and longevity.

  • Hal Motley

There a couple of things I am not too happy with Chameleon Launcher and while it does look nice and convenient from the screenshots, there are some real niggles here:

    1. They say on their website here http://www.chameleonlauncher.com/ that there is a minimum requirement list. I can't find it anywhere on there.

    2. No backwards compatibility at all with current Android widgets which aren't geared towards Chameleon, I wouldn't mind it if there was at least something crude like the Android widget equivalent of WINE. This sucks because Chameleon is based around the widget concept!

    3. The widgets use HTML5 which is annoying because of the fragmentation that it would create. Though on the flipside it would make it easy to port little apps from the Chrome store to Chameleon (also there is an API for current widgets, but they rely on the developer spending time implementing it in).

    4. No trial version at all to test the launcher and ensure it works on your Android device, also to check whether you like it or it's worth purchasing.

    5. More than twice as expensive as Nova and Apex, as well as over launchers on the store.
