Today's a good day for mobile gamers to open up their wallets. Max Payne, which David rated as having the highest possible nostalgia-to-dollars ratio, is 67% off today in the Play Store, clocking in at $0.99. Not bad. Looking for a better deal? How about Crystal Defenders? Developed by Square Enix (you know, the Final Fantasy guys), the game is normally $7.25, but for right now it's only $1.26, for a massive 83% off. Given the quality of Square Enix games, this is a fantastic deal.

Of course, Google is probably behind this, as each of these games include a reference to an 'End of Summer Sale' in their descriptions at this time. Including the revered SwiftKey 3, which is currently on sale for $0.99, or 75% off. If you haven't tried the keyboard alternative out, now would be a great time.

Other games and apps that make mention of the sale include (but are not limited to) The Lorax ($0.99), Vignette ($0.99), Star Chart ($1.09), and Super Dynamite Fishing Premium ($0.99). We haven't yet seen any official promos for this summer sale (though a similar one is going on for books right now), the prices are live. No need to wait for the ribbon-cutting. Get in there!

Update: More apps and games are joining in the fray. From Gameloft, Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation, Gangstar Rio: City of Saints, and NOVA 3 are all $0.99 in the Play Store right now, advertising the same "End of Summer Sale."

Here's a full list of all the apps and games we've been able to find so far that seem to be a part of the sale:

Update x2: Google has finally posted the sale promo. Here's a link to the full list of apps and games. There are a few apps that we didn't spot yet including The Game of Life, Draw Race 2, and Me Too! - Little Critter all for $0.99.

A "Final Fantasy III End of Summer sale" would be infinitely great..

    • nhizzat

Yup, put both on sale and I'm buying. Can't justify paying $15.

  • Kevin Kintner

Search for "end of summer sale" on the Play store and a lot of results show that in the app description. Looks like it is going to be a big sale.

    • http://pandu.poluan.info pepoluan

      Thanks for the tip! :-)

  • Stephen Zipprich

If it's anything like the last few sales they've done, there'll be a Play Store home button linking to all the sale items for end of summer, but they won't necessarily announce it.

I'm waiting for Titanium Backup as a sale item...

    • http://twitter.com/misterE33 Mr E

+1. Although I have a feeling we'll be waiting a loooong time. On a side note, I did get Rom Toolbox Pro on the last sale for 2.99 and I'm not sure if I'm missing much from TiBu

      • Matthew Fry

Rom Toolbox Pro is kind of meh in my opinion.

        • http://twitter.com/misterE33 Mr E

I'd mostly agree, but it's met my needs for the most part. I setup scheduled backups which sync to dropbox. The main feature I could use is an easier way to restore from dropbox and/or transfer the backups to another device.

The other thing I've used a lot is disabling apps from autostarting without having to completely freeze them.

    • http://twitter.com/psych2L Joseph Lee

just buy it, you don't know what you're missing!

    • nhizzat

Bought it and it's paid for itself many times over. Makes moving backups from device to device (in my case, 4 devices) very easy and greatly decreases downtime while setting up after installing new roms or setting up new devices.

    • wuf

you should get it for the full price, the developer deserves it IMO

    • alexcue

If there's a single app on the Play Store deserving of your dollars as a rooted user, it's Titanium Backup. It pays for itself the first time you have to restore apps or freeze an unruly/unnecessary system app.

    • http://www.facebook.com/alexslx Alexandre Leites

You guys won, i brought it on full price ;)

  • Vu Viet Anh

Crystal defender is one of the best TD game that i Have ever played. And it's deceptively hard too.. :(

    time to buy this bitch.

    • Christopher Wilmeth

You must not have played many TD games. It's one of the simpler ones I've played and there's not much longevity to it; you experience everything in about the first 10 minutes. I also dislike that there's no real game to win and you just play until you lose. Lazy design.

      • Vu Viet Anh

I played the very map that spawned this damn genre. And no, just because newer TDs make the game a bit more complicated doesn't mean that CD is not a good game. It is simple in design, sure, but the fun part of it comes from the ridiculous challenge that the game poses to you. There's no easy combinations to win the game, and one wrong move costs you the whole game.

Yeah, you need to play more TD, not me.

  • masterxchief

Looks like some Sega games and Gameloft games are part of the sale

    • http://twitter.com/misterE33 Mr E

Yep, "End of Summer Sale - Modern Combat 3, Gangstar Rio, and N.O.V.A. 3: Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance are at $0,99 for one week only! "

  • Kernschatten

NOVA 3 and a few other Gameloft titles are 99 cents

  • http://twitter.com/BottleRocket_ BottleRocket

Crystal Defenders for Android is lacking compared to the iOS version. It doesn't have the full feature set and is no where near worth the 7.25 they ask for, but $1.26 is worth it.

    • Bogdan Sladaru

I bought this one and I believe it's not worth even the $1.26:
      - it's not full screen; there are some ugly black bars around...
      - bad aspect ratio (on the map, the circle is more like an ellipse)
      - the input is awful: you don't touch the unit you want to upgrade... instead, using your finger, you drag a square and select the unit. The square is quite ugly, they could at least draw a decent selector
      - the texts do not fit the boxes; there's always a big space on the right of the text box
      - there's something really weird about the texts: they are drawn "squeezed", then is redrawn at another scale.
Overall, it really looks like a bad mobile port IMHO

      • http://twitter.com/BottleRocket_ BottleRocket

It looked different on my Gnex. I'll take your word for it. Square Enix has only released 1 good game on Android so far.

        • Bogdan Sladaru

Galaxy Nexus is 720x1280, Galaxy Note is 800x1280. Maybe this is confusing them :)
Anyway, the picture size is only 960x640 (e.g. the iPhone resolution), with black bars around.
This is how the image looks like: http://tinypic.com/r/25oyz48/6
And this is an example of textbox, with lots of unused space: http://tinypic.com/r/2zqedee/6

There are many more apps on sale. A complete list can be found here:

    No swiftkey tablet love huh?

    • http://twitter.com/misterE33 Mr E

There never seems to be on these sales, for some reason.

      • Himmat Singh

It was on sale once, when Swiftkey reach 1 million downloads. But it was just 50% off at that time (about 2 months back).

  • http://profiles.google.com/marcusleejh Marcus Lee

This is an *excellent* time to be using Google's generous $25 for buying the Nexus 7...

I love this. You generally don't see Apple doing this (yes, im from iOS-land previously. boo me if you wish.) so this is refreshing!

    • Coollead

      >You generally don't see Apple doing this (yes, im from iOS-land previously.

wtf? this is not serious, is it? There are literally ALWAYS sales on iOS. In fact, one of the huge complaints about the Android Market back in the day was how devs couldn't offer their apps on sale/for free like on iOS because they could never raise the price again.

Not to mention Apple themselves push out an "App of the Week" (a paid app, for free).

There are so many truthful things to hate on Apple for, let's not make up shit.

  • Jose Marie Maquinay

And I said to myself I won't use my credit card this month... Screw it! It's shopping time! Thanks Google!

  • Fifth313ment

Almost all of the Gameloft games don't support the EVO LTE? WTF? But my OG EVO is supported?
