Featured App

Video Locker Pro

Today's roundup is sponsored by Handy Apps' newest addition to its privacy and security stable, Video Locker and Video Locker Pro.

The principle is the same as their Photo Locker apps featured in many of our previous roundups: protect the videos stored locally on your device with a PIN, and keep them away from prying eyes.

The protection goes beyond mere denial of access. Video Locker will not appear in your list of recent apps, and the Pro version has an option to hide it from your app drawer as well.

Should you choose to enable it, the only way to access Video Locker Pro will be via an inconspicuous calculator widget and your personal PIN code. Speaking of which, you can recover your PIN via email if you forget it in either version.

Other features include a tablet-friendly user interface, 128-bit AES encryption, bulk video hiding, and folder-level locking. The standard app is free, while Video Locker Pro is advertisement-free and hidden from your app drawer for a reasonable $2.99.

Android Police coverage: Pinterest's Long-Awaited Photo Sharing App Hits The Google Play Store Now, Amazon Appstore Later This Week

Pinterest is at least as good as its competitors in the social sharing scene, but it's really distinguished itself with the brand-new Android app. On our platform of choice, Pinterest manages to not only outshine reigning king Instagram, but Google's own Plus as well. Read our full review for a more in-depth look.

Pinterest lets you organize and share all the beautiful things you find on the web. People use pinboards to plan their weddings, decorate their homes, and organize their favorite recipes. Servers Ultimate

If you've got an Android phone or tablet that you're not using, there are a few options. Turn it into a media remote, or a dedicated e-reader, or a Google Music streaming box. But why aim so low, when an Android device is really nothing less than a tiny, full-featured computer? Servers Ultimate takes this to its logical extreme, running as a standard web, FTP, or media server over a Wi-Fi or mobile broadband connection.

Run your own free DLNA, DNS, Dynamic DNS, Email, FTP(S), Proxy, SMS Gateway, Time, HTTP(S) and/or (secure) WebDAV server (yes, 10 different servers). From one all-including app: Servers Ultimate. You can even run multiple instances of the same server type at the same time for most. We can’t list all the features because of the limited amount of text, so below you can find a summary of most of the features. In this version you can only add a maximum of two servers, and if supported by a server: three users, three allowed IP's, three rules, three roots. If you want to be able to add unlimited items, see no advertisement and support development, please buy Servers Ultimate Pro.

  • Features:
  • Add a Dynamic DNS Updater using the local or public IP of your device
  • Start/Stop servers automatically when connected/disconnected from a specified WIFI network, or on boot, or directly when the app starts
  • Set a custom name and port per server
  • No rooted device is needed
  • Set a WIFI lock, keep the device alive and/or keep the device fully awake (including the screen)
  • Optionally save all the server data to the sdcard to prevent removal during upgrades
  • View all IP addresses of your device, including the public IP
  • Automatically email and clear the log when the maximum amount is reached
  • Verbose log (filter, email, etc)

Dolphin Browser Beta

Android Police coverage: Dolphin Browser Beta Hits The Play Store, Boasts Major HTML5 Rendering Speed Improvements

If you're a long-time Android user, you know Dolphin. The creators insist that their latest beta is the best ever, and we tend to agree with them. With Chrome and the standard Android browser better than ever, they've got plenty of competition, but a much-tweaked HTML 5 engine should make current users happy while gaining a fair amount of new converts.

Dolphin Browser Beta (with Dolphin Engine) is an improved webkit version with extensive canvas enhancement and behind-the-scenes technology that makes it our fastest Dolphin yet.

How fast? Dolphin Browser Beta's HTML-5 rendering is:
• 5 - 10X faster than the default Android browser
• 100% faster than Chrome (at times)
• Initially scored over 450 when tested on HTML5test.com. (HTML5test.com is an industry respected tool for testing a browser’s support of HTML5)
With a score of over 450, the highest tested, Dolphin has:
• Full support for Web Worker
• Full support for Web Socket
• Full support for Web Audio
• Support of Camera real-time video display
• Support of Web Notification
• Support of Web GL
• Support of Web application customization

Falcon for Twitter (Beta)

Android Police coverage: [New App] Falcon For Twitter Beta Flies Above And Beyond Other Twitter Widgets

Falcon is easily my new favorite Twitter client... and it isn't even technically an app. The beta widget fits in beautifully with ICS and Jelly Bean, runs smoothly on latter versions of Android, and includes a mini-browser that lets you read linked stories without ever leaving your homescreen. The app is free for now.

Falcon is a powerful *WIDGET* that brings a full Twitter client to your homescreen. Read your Timeline without even opening an app. Open links, images, videos and replies from any tweet in one tap - Fastest access to content ever. Android Police coverage: TeamViewer Releases QuickSupport For Android – Remotely Control Your Samsung Device From Mac, Windows, Or Linux

TeamViewer is a well-respected remote access program for desktop machines, now ported to Android exclusively for Samsung smartphones and tablets. WiFi Shoot!

Android Police coverage: Wi-Fi Shoot (Beta) Lets Users Share Photos And Videos Via Wi-Fi Direct

WiFi Shoot is more of a concept app at this point, showing off the capabilities of the Wi-Fi Direct standard by "shooting" photos from one Android 4.0+ device to another. (Ah, brings back memories of "beaming" on my old Palm M100.) Currently it's pretty buggy, with compatibility issues on the Galaxy Nexus and some Asus tablets.

WiFi Shoot it is the first (and only to the moment) app in the Google Play to use the WiFi Direct technology to wireless transmit photos and videos directly from device to device. WiFi Shoot uses the default built-in Android WiFi Direct API. WiFi direct was first introduce in Ice Cream Sandwich but it's not a requirement for a Ice Cream Sandwich device to be certified by Google to operate with the Google Play (meaning, a device can be ICS without WiFi Direct).

Splashtop 2 HD

Android Police coverage: Splashtop 2 HD Arrives In The Play Store, Is Free For A Limited Time

Splashtop is arguably the best remote access app on Android, and the 2.0 version seems to improve on speed, stability, and security. Right now the app is free, but it will cost $10 at some indeterminate time in the future. Also note that getting full-speed access to your PC over 3G or 4G will cost you a dollar a month, and that the app is currently listed as incompatible with Jelly Bean. Bummer.

Android Police coverage: Tasker Updated To Add Support For 'AutoRemote', An Insanely Powerful Remote Control Utility

Tasker is well-known among the more dedicated and technical members of the Android modding community. AutoRemote is a separate app that adds the ability to perform any of the tens of thousands of actions available in Tasker through a remote website, from any device... even another Android phone.

Here's a more advanced example of a task:

Let your wife send you a spoken shopping list when you get off work:
You can use AutoRemote with other Tasker conditions, such as the Date and Time conditions. Create a "shop=:=" command and combine it with a 5PM condition. Then, share your personal AutoRemote URL with your wife and have her send stuff she needs you to buy like "shop=:=carrots and ice cream". Then, at 5PM your phone could say that list out loud: "You need to go shopping! You need to buy carrots and ice cream"

For those already obsessed with Tasker, this one's indispensible.

With AutoRemote you have full control of your phone, from wherever you are by sending push notifications to your phone and reacting to them in Tasker.

This is how it works:
Step 1: Open AutoRemote on your phone and see what your personal URL is.
Step 2: Navigate to that URL on any browser (on your phone, PC, mac, TV, anywhere...)
Step 3: go to Tasker, add a new profile and set up a message filter. Assign that state to a Task of your choosing.
Step 4: On your personal page, input a message and hit "Send".
The task you configured in Tasker should now be executed. If it hasn't, check the logs in AutoRemote to see if anything went wrong.

To start out, check the Quickstart here.

WebMD Baby

Android Police coverage: WebMD Releases Android App For Expecting And New Parents: WebMD Baby

It's often said that people should have to pass a test before they're allowed to be parents. While that blessed day is still several decades (and much careful legislation) away, you could consider the new WebMD Baby app the study guide for the same. If you or your significant other are expecting and don't know a burp from a blanket, you'll want to give this one a try, especially since it has built-in measurement and tracking tools.

Mapsaurus Beta

Android Police coverage: Mapsaurus Takes App Discovery To A New Level With An Interactive Map Of The Play Store

Most services that give you recommendations for apps rely on tags or simply look at your current installed apps. While Mapsaurus does this as well, its real draw is a visually appealing map based on relationships between relevant apps. A couple of quick taps gets you to the Play Store page for the relevant app almost instantly.

Mapsaurus helps you discover apps you never would have known to search for. Explore the app world. Instead of browsing lists, use our visual map of connections between apps to discover the next app that belongs on your Android device. Nexus Media Importer

For reasons beyond our understanding, the powers that be at Google chose not to enable direct USB mounting on the Nexus 7. Nexus Media Importer works around this, allowing the Nexus 7 (or any Honeycomb or later device without USB mounting) to view videos, photos and music stored on an external drive. It's an admirable app, but stability and support are minor issues at the time of writing. You'll need a USB OTG cable to access USB drives.

Nexus Media Importer allows you to import and stream music, video and photos from a USB flash drive or SD card connected to your Nexus 7, or other Android 3.2+ devices that do not support mounting external storage. Google choose not to allow USB/SD Card access on the Nexus series. This software works-around that issue. Requires the following hardware. 1) A USB OTG Cable (Cost approximately $1 USD on Amazon), 2) A USB Flash Drive or USB SD Card Reader and SD Card.

Nexus Photo Viewer

Nexus Photo Viewer is identical to the app above, with two exceptions: it's free, and it can only view photos. It's meant as a test to try out the paid app.

Nexus Photo Viewer allows you to view the JPEG photos from a USB flash drive or SD card on your Nexus 7 or other Android 3.2+ devices that do not support mounting external flash storage. See screenshots for hardware examples.

VZW GS3 EZ-Unlock (Bootloader)

If you've rooted your Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III, you've no doubt heard that some very unofficial bootloader unlock options have recently become available to you. (No thanks to the heartless fiends at Big Red.) EZ-Unlock is surely the EZest way to unlock your new phone.

It doesn't get much easier than this people, open the app, press unlock, and you're done. You'll be able to use "non-kexec" AOSP roms in no time. Thanks to AdamOutler and all those who got the bootloader unlocked. You guys rock. Note: I didn't make this exploit. I only made the app to make flashing it a little bit simpler. Disclaimer: I'm not responsible for any damage you do to your shiny new phones.

Toon Goggles for Sony Tablet

Every tech-savvy parent knows that gadgets make great (if expensive, fragile, and incredibly irresponsible) babysitters. It might not be a good idea to throw your Tablet S to your 4-year-old and tell them to go wild on Netflix, where they can find Eating Out 2: Sloppy Seconds. Toon Goggles is Netflix, for barely-licensed cartoons, for Sony tablets. For free. Hey, one out of four ain't bad.

F-Stop Media Gallery

Most viewer apps focus on photos or videos. F-Stop goes beyond this, viewing and organizing every possible file format, complete with thumbnails and metadata. The latter is important, since filtering by obscure tags like Album, Date Taken, and rating is a neat trick that should help those with large collections. The interface shifts for tablets, something that's all too uncommon.

Browse, organize and password protect your media. Finally. One application that lets you Quickly Browse, Easily Organize, and Safely Protect all of your photos and videos on your Android™ phone or tablet for FREE. F-Stop Media Gallery allows you to browse your media by folder, album, tag, rating, protection status, viewing frequency, and more. Thumbnails display instantaneously no matter how you choose to view your images and videos. Organizing your media becomes effortless when using the Albums feature. Create your own Albums by selecting the media you want to add or use the Smart Albums feature. Smart Albums allow you to create albums based on simple conditions such as tags, ratings, folders, and dates. Albums are automatically populated with the media that matches those conditions.

Impressionist Fingerpaint

The filters in Instagram leave a lot to be desired, not the least of which is taste. If you're looking for something a little more classical in your "artistic" photos of that incredible cheese Danish, try Impressionist Fingerpaint. It won't make you the next Van Goh or Mucha, but it will add some interesting effects to your snapshots.

Turn any photo into an impressionist masterpiece. Impressionist Fingerpaint is an interactive painting application that lets you transform any photo into a work of art. Use different painterly brush styles to recreate your photo as if it were done in pencil, pastel, or paint. We've optimized the fingerpainting experience for tablet devices, but we've tested it on older, smaller phones, too. The two-finger pan and zoom controls allowing you to focus on the fine details or make extra-broad strokes across the entire image. The brush strokes are speed-sensitive, giving you exceptional expressive power.

CloudVault Photo Uploader

Dropbox and Google+ already automate photo and video uploads, but maybe you're not the social type. Google will probably incorporate the feature into Drive eventually, but until then, there's Cloudvault. Uploads can be sent to specific folders, and there are even a few cosmetic options. For those with a capped data plan, uploads can be saved until a WiFi connection is available.

Instantly and automatically backup your Photos & Videos to your Google Drive™. Never worry about losing your media again.

  • Uploads in full resolution without any compression.
  • Can upload immediately or be configured to wait for a WiFi connection.
  • Ability to mass upload older pictures/videos that were taken before installing the app
  • Integrated with Google Drive
  • Integrates with your Google Account using Android Account Manager and OAuth2

GuidePal City Guides

It's cumbersome (not to mention expensive) to buy a new guide for every city you visit. Luckily, GuidePal is here to see that you don't have to. In truth, there's nothing here that you couldn't find online or in other "local" apps, but the real draw is that all the information is cached offline, so you don't have to incur roaming charges when travelling abroad.

Basemark GUI Free

So, you just dropped half a grand on that shiny new Tegra 3 tablet, and you want to see just how good it is. There are plenty of benchmarking apps available, but perhaps none is quite so visually interesting as Basemark GUI. And after all, wouldn't you like to see a little more than a rotating planet or a bare hallway while pushing your gadget to its limits?

Basemark® GUI Free offers a true graphical user interface benchmark for application developers and consumers who want to measure how fast their device’s hardware performs in the context of graphical user interfaces. Basemark® GUI Free measures the 3D graphics rendering performance of device’s graphics processing unit (GPU) focusing in Vertex Streaming and Blending capabilities.

Have you ever had a repeating task that unfortunately tends to jump around the calendar a bit? Such as, say, a much-anticipated roundup of new and notable Android apps? Then Regularly might need to be a regular (sorry) part of your workflow. A ranking system allows you to know what (or what not) to do first.

Regularly helps you keep track of all your repeating tasks. Rather than constraining you with a rigid calendar approach, Regularly leaves you room to be early or late, then adjusts its reminder schedule accordingly. Regularly features a novel ranking system which allows you to quickly see which tasks are currently the most behind schedule. The tasks are colored according to their urgency, so that overdue tasks immediately stand out. Use Regularly to log your housework, car maintenance, personal grooming habits, and more.

Dunkin' Donuts

What could you possibly need in a Dunkin Donuts app? Well first of all, an easily-accessible directory of locations, to make sure that you're never far from your morning fix. Second, access to your DD card, which can be refilled from your phone or even scanned via a barcode. You know, kind of like that other ubiquitous coffee place.

It’s here. The official Dunkin’ Donuts® Mobile App. Not only is it built to make all your Dunkin’ runs easier, it’ll also get you connected so you can share the Dunkin’ love like never before.Use the app to pay for all your purchases. Simply tap the DD Card you wish to use and present the barcode to the employee to be scanned, and you’re good to go. You can also manage and reload your DD Card right from the app. You never know where or when you’ll need to make a Dunkin’ run. So if you find yourself in unfamiliar territory, fire up the store locator to find the nearest Dunkin’ and you’ll be runnin’ in no time.

Florian - image diary

For the active chronicler who wants to catalog by activity rather than words, Florian gives you an admirably pretty way of doing just that. Your activities are separated by thumb-friendly pictograms, then by date and time.

Florian is a new type of a diary. Why is it different? Each activity is represented by a colorful pictogram, which makes their selection much more comfortable and effective. Imagine all your activities – swimming, biking or going to the cinema. Would you put them down in your diary? There is no need to. Simply select an appropriate icon and save it with only one tap or add a note.

If you've ever used the phrase, "Oh, by the way, I'm a DJ," then congratulations: I hate you. But if you insist on continuing in becoming a scourge on society, then you might find rekordbox useful. Transfer, edit, and combine tracks from the desktop version, syncing back your changes to save them.

rekordbox is a music management App for Pioneer DJ products. You can transfer music files from your Mac/PC to this App to prepare for your DJ performance such as creating playlists, setting cue points, and so on. Changes and settings that have been made on your Android device can be written back to rekordbox on your Mac/PC for further editing and playback. You can also play music files in the Android version of rekordbox with Pioneer DJ products that support Wi-Fi (currently only XDJ-AERO supports Wi-Fi).

Bangstyle is an app that shows off hairstyles. As someone who's worn a comb-over since he was six, that's about all that I can confidently say. Presumably it includes bangs, which may or may not be in style. Mention is made of photos shared in a social capacity. Make of it what you will - maybe you or your significant other will figure out the next do by perusing the app or the site.

Can you imagine in this day and age that we all still rifle thru magazines ripping out hairstyle photos and jamming them into our pockets? Sheesh. There's gotta be a better way. We're not saying that we're geniuses for solving that problem with the awesome new Bangstyle Hair app but others sure are some of them unpaid. Hair stylists can shoot and share the latest from their own chairs. Users can browse recently posted articles, instantly upload hair pictures and locate the nearest hair salon at their fingertips. The interactive element allows hair stylists to immediately share and store their work, creating instant "living" portfolios for users to explore in real time.
