Two weeks after ICS first hit the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Europe and mere days after the kernel source release, the delicious 254MB update has now reached the States. The Android version is 4.0.4, and the Samsung version is IMM76D.UELPL (also P7510UELPL depending on where you look). Go ahead and check for it manually if you don't see a notification just yet or fire up Kies.

Congratulations to all the Wi-Fi Tab 10.1 owners. Welcome to the club.

The frustrating thing is the update for the P6210 is completed and released in some territories already! It's so frustrating when the manufacturers play games like this.

  • Noles419

You couldn't have posted this 10 minutes earlier before I came to work?! Gaaah! Can't wait till I get home!

          • Jon Garrett

do you have the latest version of Kies? it could also be busy with all the people accessing the server to get the update. don't give up, its there just keep trying. maybe late night or early morning when its less busy.

  • http://twitter.com/ismapro savathos

It surpass every Custom ROM out there, great speed and Stability.

    • http://codytoombs.wordpress.com/ Cody Toombs

Even if it is, now that that the ICS kernel source code is out, I imagine the custom roms are going to keep showing up Samsung in no time.

  • Cody

Not that this should be a dealbreaker, but just a heads up. The update seems to break support for 5GHZ WIFI. I've been digging through the settings as well and there doesn't seem to be an option to turn it back on.

    • GazaIan

There have been odd reports about it at XDA, check out the ICS *The Beginning* thread for those complaints. Same for Jellybean. It hasn't been giving me trouble though.

      • mk

Change the channel of the 5ghz signal to 36, 40,44 or 48. It should then be visible to your tablet.

  • eileen jag

Will it automatically go to upgrades in settings? Or into kies which I know nothing about? A reply will great. :-)

Upgraded the wife's 10.1 just as I was leaving for work. Looking forward to playing with it a bit when I get home tonight. The interface change was interesting looking. Especially the swipe to unlock which is virtually anywhere on the screen. Take that crApple! ;)

Still waiting in San Diego... I expect my tablet is getting 'tired' of me hitting the Update button and requesting to see if there's an update available... Noon our time; still no UPDATE.... OH... Please... or I'll root the damn thing I swear ;-)

Where's face unlock feature..... In ice cream sandwich... I dont see it in the security tab.....

Here's a link to a physical .zip file download from SamMobile. Don't know how to install it, but at least I'm downloading... will use this as a backup for the OS and give "SamDung" 24 more hours to put this up via WiFi... Yeah, Kies might get you the upgrade faster, but Kies fails to connect so often to my P7510 it's a choice between a reset and just waiting... Samsuck isn't the best with software... come on FirmWare!!

  • Mike

    Yes!! its about time Samsung.

  • http://slworrell.com Sherree W.

Kies is not showing the same update version that you are. Not sure what I would be updating if I do it, and it doesn't say what the update is about. Still no OTA update on West Coast (NorCal) at 11:50p.

  • Matthias

I updated yesterday via Kies (in CA) - worked great only issue so far 5 ghz wifi not accessible anymore - started to talk to samsung yesterday , first tip reset everything did not work - any other tips? or do we have to wait for the next update/ fix?

Anyone have any luck updating your google I/O limited edition?

  • brian

Has anyone been able to update the Google IO Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 to ICS?

  • Mark McIntyre

San Diego 10pm 13AUG; Hit reset button in settings on tablet running 3.2 Android OS P7510, cleared all system data and apps and restored tablet to basics; synced with Kies almost immediately afterwards (after a certain amount of apps Kies just seems to stop working?) and the firmware update began immediately. At 2am and it was installed and done (slept a little bit in there so don't take the time too literally, but it was a good few hours). Rebooted and shut down. Had a back up so spent a few hours putting my data and apps back on manually. Used a manual windows 7 copy back up along with the Kies back up to restore files and apps. LOOKS NICE... LOT OF WORK but tired of waiting... Kies stops working; don't know if it's a specific app or amount of apps. Android Ice Cream Sandwich looks nice, nice menus; might be some issues with speed on wireless, but sure they're already working on it. Usually if you just use the USB cable to attach to a PC, then do a manual backup of everything under the "Tablet", you'll cover most of your data, pictures, movies and music. My PC is backed-up 3 ways from Sunday; the tablet just contains crap I like to carry around and if I do create anything on the tablet, I make sure to move an permanent copy to my Documents folder. Good Luck... was worth it... x-PC-geek

  • http://slworrell.com Sherree W.

I finally received the update on my tablet, put it on hold for one hour (needed to backup), and now it's gone. Did they pull it?

  • MikaelM95

People running JB already and I can't even get ICS on my Tab 10.1...I know now I'll never waste my money on another Samsung product again...was going to get the Samsung Galaxy S III..am going to get the Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE instead.

    • http://codytoombs.wordpress.com/ Cody Toombs

Samsung has treated their phones WAY better than they've treated their tablets. Equally, the old Motorola hasn't been too responsible with their phones, but that may change with Google. If you've got the choice, you might just wait a couple of months until the next Nexus phone(s) come out.

By the by, if you don't mind a little tinkering, you could run JB also. The Galaxy Tab has been kind of a popular device for the CyanogenMod guys, so it's had a lot of love in the custom rom department.

      • roman785

Have thought of rooting MANY times but the process seems overly complicated & if I fudge it up i'll shit a brick- then throw my 10.1 into the nearest wall. Any suggestions on pain-free rooting?

        • http://codytoombs.wordpress.com/ Cody Toombs

Well, you know the deal, anytime you root a device, you're taking a risk. However, Nexus devices aside, I'm not aware of any device (lacking an SD card slot) that was friendlier to rooting.

I've never tried a straight root to the stock ROM with this device, I've always used rooted custom ROMs (I don't like TouchWiz, even the tablet version). I think the process is pretty straight forward:

Step 1) Reboot the device into Download Mode
Step 2) Use ODIN 3.x (on a WIndows machine) to flash ClockworkMod
Step 3) Reboot into Recovery (ClockworkMod)
Step 4a) Make a backup, just in case anything goes wrong with the new ROM...trust me, if anything goes wrong, it's really easy to restore the old image and try again, especially if your new ROM was corrupted (like my very first one was).
Step 4b) Flash the custom ROM, CM9 is where I've had mine for most of it's life.
Step 5) If you flashed a CM ROM, now flash the GApps package. This installs Google Services, GMail, and a few other things.

Each step requires knowing a little detail or two. If you're not familiar with flashing ROMs and you decide you want to (a decision you really have to make for yourself, I'm not about to pressure anybody into it), let me know and I'll either write up a good (quick) guide or link to one. The steps really aren't challenging, it's just a matter of following them carefully and getting all of the files you need.

GT-P7510 32GB WiFi USA - No update yet for me. Tried KIES and OTA. I spoke to Samsung who said they're rolling it out to owners over a few weeks.

    • http://codytoombs.wordpress.com/ Cody Toombs

Geez, they only sold 150,000 of them and I think we can safely assume 10% (or more) are already on custom roms and possibly several that will never even notice there's an update available. Does the tab notify users without manually performing a check?. Not sure they need to span over a few weeks, maybe a few days would make more sense.

Speaking of, I'm downloading the latest CM9 nightly right now.

i have the samsung galaxy tab 10.1 and it was stolen off my back porch i didnt register it is there a way to track it

    • http://codytoombs.wordpress.com/ Cody Toombs

Even registering it with Samsung doesn't make it trackable. You'd have to have installed something like cerberus or one of the other device tracking apps and set it up to do location tracking. If the device hasn't been wiped yet, there's a location tracking app called 'Plan B' https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lookout.labs.planb that can be remotely installed through the web interface and it's designed to automatically report location data to your gmail account. If you do this, be sure to call the police in advance and explain to them exactly what has happened and what you are doing so they can be prepared if you get a location. If it works, the thief will almost certainly notice an app install and might dispose of it if they aren't too stupid.

      source: http://lifehacker.com/5828197/plan-b-locates-your-lost-or-stolen-android-phone-even-if-you-didnt-install-it-beforehand

      Other...less useful...ideas:
If it was a 3g model, you can report it stolen to the carrier to which it's intended to connect and they MIGHT block it from their network, but that's doing little more that slightly annoying the user if they even care about cellular data. It also requires knowing the IMEI number (it might be on the box) and you've got to talk the carrier into it...so it's a long shot. This is far more likely to work in Europe than in in the US, and I've heard it can't be reversed even if you personally report getting the device back.

Some people claim that they've had luck getting police to issue warrants to track devices through the carrier (again, for 3g models)...but I dare you to find a cop that understands what you're talking about when you ask for this, cares that your property was stolen, is willing to do the mountain of paperwork necessary to even ask for this, and is in a state that would even allow this (since it's not completely legal in many of them). Oh, and it only gives them a region, not a precise location, so it's mostly useless even if all of this stuff comes together.

Short of video of the thief, a CSI kit to grab fingerprints, or a real psychic...your options are extremely limited. That Plan B app is really the only good shot you've got. Good luck.
