Anyone over the age of, say, 25-30, has probably played the original Final Fantasy game. If not, oh wow... we feel for you. It is a classic after all! More than two decades ago it sparked a gaming revolution, and the franchise is still going strong today.

Oh 5hit! Look out!

If you're feeling nostalgic and want to relive the days of ol', when powering up your Nintendo Entertainment System was the most important thing on your mind, Square Enix is here to help. Final Fantasy is now available on Android.

It's the same classic gameplay that you remember, albeit a bit prettier to look at. Oh, and it's only $7. Not bad for a chance to re-live your childhood. Get it!

In the widget it says $9.97

    • TynanDeRosa

Silly Android Police, lying to us! Thank god it's not 15+ like the other final fantasy.

      • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Cameron Summerson

The widget pulls from Appbrain. It's $7.

    • Yuku Sugianto

      In my place it's 8.72 SGD. Approximately 7 USD>

By the way I wonder why Android Police keeps using AppBrain widget. Any reasons why? It is not that often up to date and can't display more than 250k downloads.

    • Pete Wood

Maybe @ appbrain, it's showing $6.99 on the android (er, play) market

  • Bogdan Sladaru

It's $10, not 7. At least that's what the price I get: 800 YEN, which means about $10.
IMHO it's outrageous to ask this price... in fact, all their games are WAY overpriced: FF1, FF3, Crystal Defenders.

    • Tim Kermode

Showing as £4.44 here which would be $7

      Edit: oops fixed!

    • Cheeseball

For FF1 and FF3, these are acceptable prices considering these are guaranteed to give 30+ hours of enjoyment. Couple that with multiple ways to play (e.g. using different classes, completing the bestiary, exploring the world map, etc.), some may consider these a bargain.

      • Bogdan Sladaru

Nah, it's an OLD game with simple sprite animations, they just ported it from IOS to Android. And the IOS version is ported almost verbatim from PSP, AFAIK. So it's way too much money for little work...
You can compare FF1 with the upcoming Baldur's Gate: for the same price you'll get a way more complex game.

        • Cheeseball

Guess what? Baldur's Gate is also an OLD game with simple sprite animations, and they ported it from the PC. See what I did there?

Baldur's Gate may be more complex, but both games give a very high amount of value (30+ hours for FF, 50+ hours for BG) for players of the genre. Remember, FF used to cost $50+ for the NES/Famicom while BG used to cost $50 on the PC.

You're NOT just paying for the "porting" work, you're also still paying for the original game, and $10/$7 is well worth it.

          • Bogdan Sladaru

Nah, it's not the same. Baldur's Gate is much more complex.
I worked at Namco and I did the Final Fantasy 1&2 porting to mobile phones. It's a tile based game, with VERY SIMPLE animations; the monsters aren't animated at all during battles. If you look at the videos on youtube, you'll see that this version is similar, it wasn't improved too much.
Also, even if we're using touch devices, they are using a huge onscreen d-pad for input. So they didn't bother to update the input system, they just slapped a d-pad on the screen.
One more issue is their approach with multiple resolutions, which simply sucks... We did a better job at Namco on those crappy dumbphones, FFS!
So no, I don't think it's worth $10 (that's the price I get - maybe it's different in other regions); maybe 3 or 4 would be ok.

          • Cheeseball

Yes, of course FF1s/FF2s graphics were simple. These new ports are just visual upgrades (in terms of sprite quality, not animation) from the original. Every 2D FF has been the same.

It's basically a port of the iOS version which in turn is a port of the PSP version, so it doesn't have the dynamic directional pad of the FF3 port (which again, is also made from a well-done iOS port, originally from the NDS).

Now from the reviews I've heard, I do agree that because of the resolution limitations and basic directional pad that this port is not worth $10/$7. I would probably make the purchase if they do update it properly in the future.

          • Bogdan Sladaru

Well, anyway. I won't give them 10 bucks for this one, even if I like the original game. It's way too much for a simple port.
And it looks like I'm not the only one. The Google Play states that 10-50 people bought this.

          • Bogdan Sladaru

More updates: according to the ~60 users that gave the game a 1 star rating, you MUST be online when you start the game. So bye-bye playing it on a plane, in a subway etc.
Also, looks like there is no way to mute the application. You must mute the device. So you can't listen to music and play the game :)

      I'm seeing 6.99 here..

  • Aaron Berlin

Wait, is this not in English?

    • Tim Kermode

      It is in English

  • Jeremy Ahn

    It's quite expensive.

Am I the only one who saw that screenshot in the upper right and thought it said "Shit"?

    • Tim Kermode

Nope, for some reason your comment wasn't showing before I posted mine ;-)

      same here lol

"Shit" now I have to play this, or "Shit" is what it looks like? I said the first one.

This has been out for a while now hasn't it? (at least I've had it for a while)

  • Tim Kermode

The little green guy in the second screenshot appears dismayed...

That 5-hit combo indicator does look like "Shit" if you don't look twice. Haha.

This is on iOS for ages (back when I used it at 4.0 and then learnt how terribly restrictive the walled garden is) . Why Cameron are you acting like it has been released only yesterday?

Needless to say this was on my list of awesome games and I will definitely be grabbing this. Along with FF2 when that will be released.

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Cameron Summerson

Because we don't cover iOS, and this is new to Android.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1745689461 Hal Motley

I didn't word that correctly, mea culpa. I guess as a preference I would have preferred "After 2 years on iOS, Final Fantasy is seeing light on the Android platform." or something.

I think that post of mine was mostly the very frustration that it took Square Enix 2 years or so to port their first Final Fantasy game from iOS. Unless they did a complete code rewrite or something, I am not sure how to justify it.

I guess at least they have released the game to Google Play and they we should hopefully see the second game in a few months time.

PS: Hey, imagine if iOS was on this site it would be called the ApplePolice or CellphonePolice. Truth is though I love you AP as you are! :-)

  • Steve Freeman

Someone on another site said the SS's looked like FF3, not FF1...which makes me wonder why they sent out the incorrect SS's? Was it on purpose or just an accident, and they don't know their own games?

  • RJ7766

also the iso version was a psp port... for what it is worth

  • RJ7766

    *IOS* version

  • http://www.geeknik.com/ geeknik

Too bad it's a crappy iOS port that doesn't appear to scale correctly to most devices. Hopefully SE fixes it, but they probably won't.

    • Cheeseball

I know the borders are most likely bad on a phone at 1280x800 or 1280x720, but how does it look on 800x480 devices?

      • http://www.geeknik.com/ geeknik

I haven't tested it out on my Galaxy Nexus, mainly because once I got my Nexus 7, the only thing I use the Galaxy Nexus for is tethering, texting and a few phone calls. ;)

        • Cheeseball

Not to sound like an ass, but your Galaxy Nexus runs at 1280x720 (whereas your Nexus 7 runs at 1280x800). It was one of the main advantages over the Galaxy S II (which is basically a first cousin to the Galaxy Nexus).

I'm asking this because even though I'm a big old-school FF fan, if this port of Final Fantasy 1 has excessive black borders on my 800x480 GS2, then I'll hold off buying it until they patch the game.

          • http://www.geeknik.com/ geeknik

Yeah, I know.. I was distracted when I was distracted by work when I replied to you..

          • Cheeseball

Distracted when you were distracted? We need to go deeper.

          • http://www.geeknik.com/ geeknik

            I give up... ;)

          • Cheeseball

            :D

On the devices you tried it with, the borders are all around or does it just pillar box? (only two sides have black borders instead of all-around?)

      • http://www.geeknik.com/ geeknik

I haven't tested it out on my Galaxy Nexus, mainly because once I got my Nexus 7, the only thing I use the Galaxy Nexus for is tethering, texting and a few phone calls. ;)

  • jack stewart

ok i love final fantasy, ive bought every SE game for android hoping they would bring the rest of the series to android, even the stupid ones. Having said that,to bring a direct port of the IOS version, without even taking into account larger screen resolutions is disgraceful. 7 bucks for a game with black borders on my note?much less on my nexus 7? I have purchased it, but it will be the last unless the next one is up to the quality of FF3,because this one is most defiantly not...

  • http://profiles.google.com/ottermann Jason Heiken

    Dang....
Spent $49 on the NES cartridge, beat the game.
Spent $20 on the GBA cartridge, beat the game.
Spent $5 on the iOS version, beat the game.
Now it's on Android? Well, looks like I'm out another $7 and will be playing it on my Kindle Fire.

I remember selling the original NES cartridge in 2001 or 2002 to a Gamestop. I still had the box, both maps and the instruction/walkthrough book. Guy gave me $50 for it, so I guess that wasn't so bad. Unless I could have sold it for $100 on eBay......

I was in heaven until I saw the price. Nostalgia is over priced these days

  • http://www.halfey.me/ Halfey Halphstein

    I want FFVIII on Android.

  • drdyst

For those unfamiliar with the changes to the original this is the PSP version. It has the mp system instead of the casts-per-level system of the original. It also has the added bonus dungeons from the GBA and PSP versions.

  • Wayne Randall

Judging from the comments, looks like you need internet connection to play. Bummer. I hope this isn't a trend.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jasonconort Jason Conort

The game looks awesome, brings back so many rpg memories. For those not wanting for drm to check to see if you bought the game, it pretty much comes down to something along these lines, or Android not getting the big name games. No company wants to put out a game and have piracy rates as high as 80 percent.
