AT&T just flipped the LTE switch to 'on' for four lucky markets in parts of Florida and Massachusetts, including:

  • West Palm Beach, FL
  • Fort Lauderdale, FL
  • Miami, FL
  • Worcester Area, MA

It also expanded in a few other markets:

  • Baltimore, MD
  • Boston, MA
  • Washington D.C. (which expanded the network into Northern VA)

While AT&T's still small-ish LTE network pales in comparison to Verizon's nearly-nationwide 4G blanket, it seems to be rolling out new markets on a consistent basis, making sure to cover all the major metropolitan areas.

At this point, you have to wonder if Sprint or T-Mobile will ever catch up.

Don't know anything about LTE... I live only 30 minutes away from New
York City. AT&T coverage here became significantly worse last
summer, and stayed like that ever since. Usually there are 2 bars on my Infuse 4G (yeah... right). There is no t-mobile reception here, not sure about Sprint. Speedtest.net shows speed anywhere between 512Kbs-1Mbs. Sometimes a little higher, but often lower. Download speed is not necessarily higher than upload. Currently waiting for all lines to come off their contracts.

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

The Infuse 4G is not an LTE phone.

      • Dmitry Lekhtuz

I know. I am complaining about speeds in general. What is the point of buying state of the art LTE phone, if all I get is under 1Mbs?

        • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

I'm confused. Do you know that you don't have LTE coverage in your area (yet) or are you saying you'll know LTE will be under 1Mbps somehow without having an LTE phone?

"...making sure to cover all the major metropolitan areas."

    ...except on the west coast.

    Seattle? Nope.

    Portland? Nope.

    Muncie, IN? Yes!

    Wichita, KS? Yes!

    Burlington, NC? Yes!

Lawrenceburg, TN? Yes! I've never even heard of this thriving metropolis of 10,489.

San Juan, PR? Yes! Oh god I give up.

    Good bye AT&T.

Technically, Portland hasn't been turned on, but one of the last few times I was passing through (on my way back from Seattle), I did see LTE briefly pop up. It's probably being turned on for testing... I would expect to see it pop up sometime next month. I've heard the same is true for Seattle, but I wasn't going to move my sim card to my Lumia just to test it.

      • Josh Keller

I saw that in Portland too! I just turned my phone on this morning and noticed the LTE symbol below the 4G... Did a test and saw about 7 Mb/s down and 5 Mb/s up. Came back 20 minutes later and the LTE was gone... Did another test and saw slower speeds. I searched around and found this article. Like you, I'm thinking AT&T is just testing it briefly, and waiting to activate later (an AT&T rep told me it'll be activated in Portland in Q4).

The only reason I didn't say the same.as you is because Verizon's LTE is only clocked at 20-30mbps most places being less than 20 on the 10 range... at&t always takes a little longer but you can always count on them to be better and faster cuz they take their time to make it good... I just got LTE last week in my town in ca, but it's clocking at over 40mbps... it's more than twice as fast as WiFi and most Verizon LTE networks...

At this point will AT&T catch up with Verizon.

May have the biggest 4g network but not the LTE. It's all about the speed these days.

  • Mark

Nice! I Live right in between Ft. Lauderdale and West Palm beach. I hope they covered the "in between" areas/cities as well.

Lawrenceburg, TN? 10,000 people? Holy shit. I live in the midwest in a town of 35,000 people and we'll NEVER see LTE here. But with ATT you have to pay for an LTE plan if your phone is an LTE phone (and all their top-line phones are), even if you can't get LTE... Does that remind you of Sprint charging for 4G phones an extra $10/mo when they didn't have 4G?

    • http://twitter.com/HRTheJoey Joey B

ummmm yeah, you need to get an LTE plan... that cost the same as the non-LTE plan. $20 for 300 MB or $30 for 3GB......

  • casey

I live in Modesto cal and it seems that at least part of Modesto by the freeway has lte. But I've heard nothing about it. Noticed the lte under the 4g yesterday.

    • DejoH

AT&T 4G in Modesto? Can you confirm which parts? I was told Fresno will be activated Q3 (I work for them) but no word on Modesto. This should be interesting

  • Gil

If you are curious as to how fast 4G LTE really is, in the Ft. Worth area and in Austin, speedtest.net was showing anywhere from 29mps, to 32mps.....sorry New York.

    • guest

      Where in Austin?

      • Hillary Jacobs

What? Um, it's in Texas, dude. And I get the same here with my AT&T 4GLTE. Hair style shots fly to and fro my clients quickly; pretty cool. Where is Austin... really. Got map?

        • doubleoevan

Where IN Austin. Not where IS Austin. Got reading comprehension?
