A little while ago, Madfinger Games pushed a pretty major update to its new zombie-filled apocalyptic first-person shooter Dead Trigger. This update brought new weapons, arenas, levels, and zombies; it also brought an unexpected perk: a new price of free.

1

Now you can get in on all of the action without paying a dime. Of course, if you still want to show the developers some love (which I highly recommend), you can also do so through the in-app purchasing system.

Hit the widget to grab the game.

Thanks, Pariss!

  • Christopher Walton

i think then that the ones that paid for the app in the first place should get a perk.

    • Michael

You did, you got to play it before anyone else

      • Cheeseball

No. Everyone else would've gotten to play it too had they paid $1 like the rest of us. Yes, the game's content before IAPs is more than worth $1, but for those who took the plunge and paid for the game, we deserve some sort of perk (or at least one of the IAPs worth a $1) for free since everyone else can play the game without even spending a dime.

      • New_Guy

Exactly. It was a buck. If you can't afford a buck then you have no business purchasing video games in the first place.

    • Wayne Randall

i admit, i only came here to lolz at you kids crying about a dollar.

thanks! you made my afternoon :0)

  • Sqube

I'd rather have just paid for the game and been able to access everything in-game without using IAPs.

    • wordone

I bought the game a couple days ago. You can't get much play out of the game without having to purchase upgraded weapons. It's actually really annoying.

      • Sqube

That's disappointing. I bought it, but haven't had a chance to play it. I was hoping it was one of those games that wasn't going to require IAPs, especially since I paid goddamn cash money for it.

Is it one of the things where you'd have to do stupid amounts of grinding in order to get the stuff you can acquire with IAPs, or is it really IAPs or bust?

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1849765376 Jordan Rushing

"Is it one of the things where you'd have to do stupid amounts of grinding in order to get the stuff you can acquire with IAPs, or is it really IAPs or bust?"

It's neither. You just play the game normally and work your way up. IAP's are totally optional. The game doesn't force you to buy anything, but if you really don't want to use IAP's then you have to work for it like regular people. You really need to read the Editorial David wrote. It explains everything.

          http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/07/13/editorial-the-in-app-purchase-conundrum-or-how-dead-trigger-has-wrongly-become-the-target-of-a-witch-hunt/

          • Sqube

Thanks for the link! I have no problem with grinding; hell, I probably won't even notice. I thought they were doing it like all the KRPG and JRPG style games coming out for Android where they tease you with useful stuff... that's impossible to acquire without IAPs.

If I can grind up to the tasty goodies, I'll grind.

          • That

yeah you get an average of $700 game cash on each level early on and if you land a lot of headshots and find the "secret" cash stack on each level, you can bump that up to $1300. The best gun you can get with in-game money costs only $12000 (without upgrades that is). not to mention you dont even need it, the simplest automatic weapon is more than enough to get you to level 10 easy. i'm curretly bottlenecked by my level, not my money.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1849765376 Jordan Rushing

If you're that horrible at the game, why did you even get it? Read this, if you haven't already.

        http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/07/13/editorial-the-in-app-purchase-conundrum-or-how-dead-trigger-has-wrongly-become-the-target-of-a-witch-hunt/

  • Sean Stone

Any chance us paying early adopters get a little love in the way of currency in the game?

  • Garrett

what about the people who payed for the game before it became free?

    • StriderWhite

You're talking about me? Well, nothing, I suppose...

    • ericl5112

They should let them get $0.99 worth of IAP currency, but doubt it will happen. Then again, it's $0.99.

    • New_Guy

What about us?... We paid $1 for an amazing game. We paid $1 and got in early. Prices always drop on games. Just because the price drops on Max Payne 3 a month down the road doesn't mean you deserve a refund for buying it full price.

Frankly, I think dropping the price was a mistake as this game is well worth the buck

      • http://twitter.com/TheGermian Germian

Not after two weeks. It takes months until there is some kind of sale - or devs make a sale when they release the app for a short amount of time until it gets more expensive again - but not after two weeks. I have never seen that, not on a PC game, 360 XBLA, PSN or Steam.

        • asy

i recommend you go read a little about dead rising 2, total disaster, almost price dropped immediately upon release

    • Mikie

I have some problem with fking AVAST my friend who buyed TheftAware...

  • Angel Alvarez

Why should you get a perk for paying not even a dollar for an awesome game that is definitely worth more? I paid for it also. Stop bitching and show support to the developers...

    • Sean Stone

Not bitching, I'm certainly ok with paying $1 for this game. Just curious if there will be some form of a thank you to the early adopters since they made it free only 16 days after it's initial release. I'm thinking along the lines of "Exclusive Content" you get for pre-ordering games or something similar.

      • Angel Alvarez

Sorry, didn't mean to sound aggressive. Like Peter G. says "you know what really grinds my gears? " Most people are ok shelling out 200-600 bucks for a tablet or phone but they complain when something they paid $1 for is now free. I get a sense that people feel entitled to things.

  • http://www.Nave360.com Sebastian Gorgon

Filed a report and requested a refund (only way get a refund if you purchased it around 2 weeks ago)

    • StriderWhite

      why?

      • http://www.Nave360.com Sebastian Gorgon

Because it's now free, and now that i have my 75p back i can use it towards an in-game purchase

        • New_Guy

The buck??? And we wonder why developers are slow to adopt Android...

          • http://www.Nave360.com Sebastian Gorgon

If the game was $5 i'd buy it... but the fact that i paid and it then became free AND you need to spend money in-game to get anywhere all pointed me towards getting a refund so i could use the money to buy a weapon in-game

          • nhizzat

If you're willing to pay $5 for the game but only paid $1, wouldn't that leave you with $4 left to spend on IAPs?

          • http://www.Nave360.com Sebastian Gorgon

I paid $1, game went free i got a refund and used that $1 to get an IAP... what's wrong with that

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1849765376 Jordan Rushing

The blatant stupidity and ignorance behind it. I was willing to spend $5 on the game and I did. Bought the game for $1, and spent $4 on IAP. Same difference as buying the game for $5 outright.

          • http://www.Nave360.com Sebastian Gorgon

OH fuck of already, i'm free to do whatever the fuck i want, is it illegal no, is it wrong? no, problem? fuck off

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1849765376 Jordan Rushing

Awwwwww? Are you going to cry like a little bitch about it? Sounds like it. It's really sad that this blog has to be ruined by foolish children.

          • http://www.Nave360.com Sebastian Gorgon

No this blog is ruined by bored idiots like you, if you have a problem live with it, they got $1 from me, i got it back and i put it back in but this time i got something,

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1849765376 Jordan Rushing

But you still wasted a $1 either way. You're an idiot, and deserve to get punched in the face.

          • http://www.Nave360.com Sebastian Gorgon

            how did i waste it...

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1849765376 Jordan Rushing

For the $1 you originally spent on the game, you could have gotten any of the weapons that require gold anyway, considering they give you offers for free gold everyday. That and the fact that you don't need to spend more than $3 dollars anyway to get everything in the game.

          • http://www.Nave360.com Sebastian Gorgon

I downloaded 2 samsung apps, and they didn't reward me with any gold... i liked their 3 facebook game accounts, no points either... it doesn't work for me,

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1849765376 Jordan Rushing

Well then, I guess that's more of an App issue. My apologies.

          • http://www.Nave360.com Sebastian Gorgon

And my apologies for telling you to F off.

          • Cheeseball

            You're not getting it.

He spent that $1 to get one of the IAPs, possibly one of the ones that you can only buy with gold.

He would've spent $5 on the whole game if it didn't have the restrictive gold currency in place, and just grind the in-game currency all the way to get all the complete weapons.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1849765376 Jordan Rushing

No, he could have gotten everything for $4, you don't need to spend more than $3 on the game to get everything.

          • Cheeseball

I haven't checked, but is the IAP managed or unmanaged? If it's unmanaged, if he
uninstalls the game (or uses another compatible Android device), he will
not be able to get any of his gold currency purchases back unless he pays for them again. If it's managed, then his purchased gold and items should still be available even after formatting or using another device.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1849765376 Jordan Rushing

I'd imagine after that latest update with cloud storage, he'd keep everything even if he uninstalls it. I will, of course, test this at my own risk. But if it is managed I'll say so or not.

          • Cheeseball

If the cloud platform part of the update works post-IAP purchase, then I can agree with you and others that $0.99+$3.00 for the "full" game would suffice since I consider it technically permanent.

However, if it's unmanaged, then that would be a huge issue and support his argument of a solid $5 dollar game instead of the paymium system.

          • Cheeseball

The same shit happens on iOS, so it's not just "an Android thing".

  • Michael

You can really tell who did/didn't read the article about this game and IAP

  • http://cocainemonster.deviantart.com/ Fun With Drugs

    Oh.
I pirated it on release day. Oh well.

    • StriderWhite

lol, and that made you proud, isn't it?
      OPPPS, double post!

      • Cheeseball

Well technically, it should make him proud because now he can get the game free legally without having to spend anything.

        • StriderWhite

I hope he got a virus, a really bad one!

          • Cheeseball

LOL, what virus? It's basically getting the .APK and killing the Market Check permission. Boom, done.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1849765376 Jordan Rushing

Wut. No bueno man, no bueno. Oh well. I supported the devs and I don't expect to receive anything for it also, in fact, they gave us a game to play. Good enough for me.

  • nhizzat

    $1 people, $1.

    • MXXX

it's not about the $1, it's about the courtesy. not even an update or statement.

      • StriderWhite

the update is now, statements? You could read them on their forum...

        • http://www.jeroenheijster.com/ Jeroen Heijster

Forums? You expect me to watch every forum of every game I play? I might as well quit my job then.

          • StriderWhite

            It's your choice...

          • http://www.jeroenheijster.com/ Jeroen Heijster

Well, no. What you suggest is just ridiculous.

          • StriderWhite

Come on, you can follow them on Twitter, for God's sake! It's not that difficult, you know!

          • http://www.jeroenheijster.com/ Jeroen Heijster

Oh yeah because people don't have enough accounts to follow. Just because you've got enough spare time you can't expect others to have that too.

          • StriderWhite

If they keep following Justin Bieber I suppose not!

      • nhizzat

You obviously felt that the game was worth the $1 you spent but now that it's free, you want your money back? I bought the game yesterday and I've gotten my $1 worth of entertainment.

  • Butts

I bought this game and it wouldn't work on my Adreno 205 phone. Of course, unless you play it within 15 minutes, you can't get a refund. I assumed if they let me buy it, it'd work. So, now they've made it work on the Adreno phones and they make it free... what did I pay for again? I paid to own an app that I couldn't use. This google store business is bullshit. There isn't enough accountability and people don't fight it because of the paltry sums of money involved. Half of the shit on there is daylight robbery.

    • nhizzat

Did you take any initiative by emailing them directly?

      • New_Guy

        Nope...

    • JDHokie

Do you have PayPal? I'll send you a nickel. If 19 other people chip in, you can get your $1 back.

      • New_Guy

        Haha! Hilarious.

      • fixxmyhead

count me in on that nickel

    • StriderWhite

listen, it will be available for Adreno GPU soon, so don't worry, your buck isn't missing (yet!)

    • UniBroW

sounds like you didn't do anything other than bitch and moan. I've found that I can get refunds for generally just about anything, given a little bit of effort and..well..sense.

  • Bruno Pedro

well fuck me, not even a week ago i bought this thing

    le sigh

    • nhizzat

Are you really missing that $1?

      • New_Guy

        Nope... Just spoiled...

    • fixxmyhead

what a cheapskate. are u gonna go into debt for losing a measly dollar?

  • b_to_the_randon

Can they just credit those who purchased the game with $1 for in-app purchase? If I had known this was going to switch to free I'd have saved my buck for an IAP.

    • New_Guy

The only reason they dropped the price in the first place was because of people crying about the buck. You are exactly why developers are slow to switch to making Android apps instead of iOS.

      • b_to_the_randon

No clown, I'm not. I'm making a rational statement. I bought the game initially (despite having not even played it yet -- time commitments) to encourage development on the Android platform. But in retrospect had they simply announced a plan to make the game free and subside from IAP's I would've saved my $1 until such time that it was free and then used that for in-app purchases.

Just because a viewpoint differs from your own, and even if it's just a dollar, doesn't mean I'm somehow degrading the Android platform.

        • New_Guy

No, you really are. Just because the price drops on anything we ever buy desn't mean you deserve a refund. Rational? No, your logic goes against anything anyone has ever done in business. I highly suggest you either email the developer about your buck, or simply get over it

          • b_to_the_randon

I've already emailed the developer. So far as a business transaction goes its considered good business to communicate your sales plan in advance rather than switching it up without warning. This sort of change without communications lessens faith in future development.

            Rage on troll.

          • Cheeseball

Apparently you are not getting his point. His point is that instead of using that $1 for the game (which was going to end up free in a short timeframe), he would've spent that $1 for IAPs which would've been more useful.

          • New_Guy

No, my friend, what's more useful is knowing that it was a dollar well spent...

          • Cheeseball

Well spent with what? The game is worth more than $1, yes, but the early adopters don't get anything out of it aside from being able to play the game ahead of people who can't afford it, which is not worth anything unless it was an exclusive or timed deal.

200 gold (which costs $1) would've been a great way to say thank you to ones who dove right in. It's good customer service and promotes retention and may even encourage people to actually purchase more IAPs.

  • http://twitter.com/thepowerofscott Scott Nienhuis

    ALL OF YOU!

    • StriderWhite

I think this is impossible...people love complaining about everything!

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

      This +1000000.

  • Southrncomfortjm

Glad I paid a buck for this a few weeks ago!

Good luck getting people to be early adopters of your games from now on Madfinger.

  • Roberto Giunta

While I have no problem with paying $1 for this game, it's pretty unfair to their costumers who already paid. They should just give everyone $1 worth of Gold in the game.

And for everybody who is curious, at least the site admin on their forum doesn't see anything wrong with it. Here the topic: http://www.madfingergames.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=595

    • patapongirl

Dude do you ever ask for refund if the clothes/toiletries/shoes you bought went on sale? And I'm pretty sure they are more than a dollar.

      • http://twitter.com/TheGermian Germian

If you wanna know what good costumer service is, have a look at Nintendo when they reduced the price of the 3DS. Yes, it's more money but just that's the same situation. You can't compare "toilet paper" with something like that.

When there is a summer sale around the corner, I don't go out two weeks earlier and spend money like hell for clothes. In this case, there was nothing like that announced. So early adopters can feel like forced donors.

As I said, I have nothing against paying a buck for that game, but it's not really nice costumer service. I'll wait a month next time when they come out with a game because it's likely it's gonna become free. They already did "paymium" and I was okay with that, but then switching to "freemium" after two weeks looks pretty bad IMHO.

        • Cheeseball

However, when Nintendo reduced the price of the 3DS, they gave all the early adopters (who initially paid more) access to the Ambassador Program, which netted them 20 free games off the eShop. Now that is true customer service.

          • http://twitter.com/TheGermian Germian

That's what I meant. I was too lazy to post details because I thought that it was more or less known :)

      • Cheeseball

Where in his post is he asking for a refund?

      • William Neal

Well this is only a $1 and i don't really care.. But i just want you to know if you do buy something and withen 60 days if it goes on sale then you will be awarded the difference. At least here in ca that's how it works.

      • Christopher Walton

most stores offer a refund of the difference if something goes on sale 30 days after you buy the product (ex. best buy)

  • http://twitter.com/rdlf2048 Rodolfo Ferreira

You know what? F*** it. And here comes some hope that Square Enix Team does the same as Madfinger did. If they scr**ed you guys, feel free to sc** us some more, they both have made games for Android with 50K+ downloads so why not make Final Fantasy free as well? Goes 1 dollar, goes 100 dollars and american gamers don't give a shit about it.
GR8 MADFINGER!!11!!1 WAY TO GO SQUARE ENIXXXX !!11!!!1!1!!!1!111!!!

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

      Get a life, dude.

    • nhizzat

I'd be salty if i paid $16 for FF3 only to see it drop drastically in price a week later. It's why I can't take the plunge. I'm sure it's an awesome game but I just can't justify the $16 right now.

      • Cheeseball

It's Square-Enix. They'd probably drop the price or place the game on sale after a year in the market. The game is old-school JRPG-quality, so the price is justified, considering that it sold for ~$40 on the Nintendo DS back in 2006. (And more than ~$60 on the NES/Famicom back in 1990.)

  • jmartinez210

I dont care about the 99cents, but i do care about paying 4.99 of IAP and never receiving the item. I have emailed them over and over asking for a refund only to get no response!

    • Cheeseball

Now that's a different problem altogether. Keep contacting them about it.

    • New_Guy

All the people crying about their well spent dollar are killing me softly. But, you sir, have a legitimate complaint.

Definitely get what you rightfully deserved!

  • glitchsys

Figures. I JUST bought this game yesterday for $1 and NOW it's free? wtf? I want a refund or at the least, the $0.99 G pack that gets you 200 gold, at least I can get some killer weapons.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Joecascio2000 Joseph Cascio

Oh man am I so glad I hit the refund button. I knew this was gonna happen.

  • John O’Connor

and here i was going to buy it when it first came out! this is the first time a hectic lifestyle came in handy for me. CUE THE one click web install on all devices

  • Tyler Chappell

Wow, I sure am glad I wasted $0.99 on a stupid ass game that I thought I would be playing on my N7 by now, which has yet to arrive. I'll make up for it by not buying their other games.

  • StriderWhite

you know what? Dead Trigger isn't bad because it has IAP, it

  • http://codytoombs.wordpress.com/ Cody Toombs

I've tried skimming to see if anybody else has said this, but it appears not.

I do have a problem with this. It's not that they effectively had a Reverse Sale, it's not that they had a game you paid for and then had IAPs on top of that, and it's not that they took a paid game down to free... It's that they gave in to a bunch of whiney and self-entitled jag-offs (WASÉJO from here on) who complained about the original business model. There's no denying, they are trying something that hasn't been fully tested, and they made an investment that might not pay off with the model they chose (though, I doubt that's the case if they were to have handled it differently). By giving up on the model they had, they are throwing away the opportunity to learn if that model would have worked. Not only that, but they are encouraging the WASÉJOs out there to keep acting the way they do, because they feel that it will lead to them getting everything they want.

I'll admit, doing 2 weeks after I bought it, that does annoy me. Some people are trying to rationalize it by saying it was a cost for early access. I bought it right away, thinking (as did others) that it was a sale price. I still haven't played it because I've been super busy. With the game going to free (something that cannot be reversed on Android), I've effectively given money to them for something and I'll never get anything out of that. I admit, I do have a gut feeling that I was ripped off for a dollar, but I really don't care about that (it would actually cost me more than $1 to spend time caring about it). I'm a sane and rational person, and a momentary feeling of being ripped off can be easily ignored when it's so trivial. I do care that they're setting a terrible precedent going forward... Frankly, I would have spent more than a dollar just to see them stay with the model they started with and not give in to the WASÉJO mentality.

    • Jameslepable

I agree with you but you know what the android community is like. Which is why I think early adopters should get £1 worth of cash or gold. Not because they have to but more of a thank you for buying our game first and trying it out, sorry our BM didn't work out.

      • http://codytoombs.wordpress.com/ Cody Toombs

"...but you know what the android community is like"

That is awful. It's like handing meth to a tweaker and saying, "I tried to stop him, but you know how he gets".

I know what you mean about giving "early adopters" a bonus, because it does incentivize them to continue buying, I just don't personally care about getting anything extra in the game as a bonus. I also can't call us "early adopters", just because that term is about making a commitment to a product (like an operating system or a social network), not a game that you're probably going to play for a week or two, then once more on the first content expansion...but that's just semantics.

The other thing, they can't apologize for the business model failing, it hasn't failed yet! :) I've never met a right-thinking person in the business of making money who actually believes that 2 weeks is a long enough grace period to try something (even something that's not new). This had nothing to do with the failure of the business model, it was a failure to stand strong against a litany of petty complaints.

I meant it in a positive way. Like how all my family have android phones because I do and I advise them to do so. So if madfinger give everyone who got the game early 200 gold which is fake money it looks good to the community at large. And I believe the model failed because it tried both ways. You pay for it and it has in-app purchases which is a risky BP. Although I spent £5 in total on the game I feel mis-lead by the advertising and descriptions.

What also adds to this insult is that the 1.1 update doesn't work on Jellybean!!!!

  • Wrong move pal

while i don't regret buying it (it was only $1 after all), it does feel like they're bitchslaping early-adopters. they pretty much actively punishing you for supporting their game early on. really bad marketing move.

I personally think it's appropriate to do IAP's... Yes they r kinda annoying, but in my eyes they prevent piracy>devs will feel more confident in android>more and better apps

"Of course, if you still want to show the developers some love (which I
highly recommend), you can also do so through the in-app purchasing
    system."

    No thanks.

lovely... I paid .99 cents for this game, then paid .99 cents again to get my M16 back... then the game got deleted and had to rebuy in game currency because it doesn't have a restore purchase ability... Great job Mad finger... Not only do you screw people who have app problems but you also just screwed everyone who bought your game previously.

It seems like people have come here solely to pick on people "whining" about a dollar. I don't understand this thought process. Yes it's only a dollar, and yes I will survive. The doesn't mean I don't (or shouldn't) feel slightly bitter that they make it free right after I buy it.

The point here is that a lot of people are slightly cranky about this. That's fine. They have opinions and they are valid. The real effect of this is that when Madfinger games sells a new $0.99 game, a lot of people that had this happen to them will hold out on getting. "Oh yeah it looks cool, but it will probably be free in two weeks and I don't want to get ripped off."
