Petri

This roundup is sponsored by Petri, from developer MobilWerx. The latest entry in the increasingly popular "chill out" genre, Petri follows the microscopic battlefield at 500x power. Part physics puzzler and part strategy, the laid-back visuals and music are meant to relax and challenge at the same time.

Though the theme of Petri is microscopic, some of the tactics you'll use are surprisingly familiar. You can use mitosis to literally divide and conquer, or expend energy to move your microbes rapidly or intimidate tiny opposing fauna. The game uses these three tactics to create multiple challenging levels.

Petri is 99¢ in the Google Play Store. It should work with all devices running Éclair or higher. If you're looking for a solid game with a decided lack of explosions, give Petri a try.

Venture into the hostile world of a Petri Dish. Part gobble-up and part life simulation, Petri is survival of the fittest on a microscopic level. The game is easy to play, but difficult to master as you guide you microbial soldiers into battle against other hostile dishmates. Your choices, while navigating the dish, are simple. You can choose to split and expand your ranks, expend energy speeding away, or scare off potential threats and competition. Petri is deceptive, ambient, infuriating and soothing, all at the same time. Tactical warfare on a microbial level. Split, Speed, or Scare..What's a microbe to do?

Android Police coverage: Battle Monkeys: A Game With Apes, Guns, Explosions, And Lava - Need I Say More?

There are times when explosions are absolutely necessary. As Mr. Heston might say, most of those times involve apes. In Battle Monkeys you take the mantle of an army of simian warriors whose only goal is to climb the evolutionary ladder by stamping out all competitors with extreme prejudice. Combining turn-based strategy with monkeys (with guns) might be reason enough for you to give it a try, but there's also an extensive customization system for the in-game avatars. Battle Monkeys uses a "Freemium" model, with a free initial download supported by optional in-app purchases.

The warriors gather, the crowd chant your name, are you ready for the most intense battle of your life? In a world where monkeys rule, there is only one way to find out who's the boss... FIGHT. Astro Shark

We've all taken the mantle of space marines, lone commandos and strangely-placed plumbers in our various gaming adventures, but I'll bet no one reading this has ever played as a whale shark. (Sit down, Sega fans - Ecco doesn't count.) The undeniably unique Astro Shark Demo does just that, putting you in the rubbery skin of the world's largest fish. Who for some reason is breathlessly in love with Laika, the famous Soviet cosmonaut dog. Gameplay has Astro the flying shark rocketing through space, using planetoids as gravity guiders for hair-pin turns. The game is just a demo at the moment - presumably the developers will finish the full, paid version sometime soon.

Help Astro Shark find Laika the space dog. Join Astro Shark’s space adventure by trying out this free demo. Playing as a whale shark, this arcade game will draw you into a fantastic space world where you’ll help Astro Shark find his missing love, Laika the space dog. During this intergalactic journey he will meet weird animals, fight ferocious enemies and hopefully rejoin with his beloved Laika. Be quick though. For him to succeed we need your help, to finish the game and bring it to you in all it's glory, with deeper story, more characters, music, animations, and many other bells and whistles.

Airbag Frank 3D

Remember Dumbo, the flying elephant? Cross that basic idea with some Domo-inspired zaniness and physics smash-em-ups, and you get Airbag Frank 3D. It's the story of a cat (maybe?) with an obvious flying fixation, a slingshot and a dream. But the notable thing about Airbag Frank is the "3D" part. Those of you with a pair of 3D glasses (The old-school red-and-blue kind that Biff's buddy wears in 1955) can get some cheap thrills with an eye-popping effect. Airbag Frank 3D is free, but there's a premium "Gold" version available as well.

Help Frank reach for the stars in this incredibly cute and dazzlingly fun game. Frank always wanted to fly. Help Frank reach for the stars in this incredibly cute and dazzlingly fun game. Radical Tube

Normally I'm wary of anything made after 1996 that claims to be "radical", with the possible exception of Swat Kats. But considering that the genre of hoverboard racing has been severely underrepresented ever since the lamentable Sonic Riders, I'm willing to make an exception. Radical Tube takes a futuristic bent to racing a la SSX, awarding points for speed, tricks and item collection as you blast through one of four 3D environments. The game is free, but you'll need at least a mid-range device to take advantage of the graphics.

Welcome to Radical Tube. A machine capable of creating fantastic VR scenarios.

The competitions are:

  • Sprint: Using the speed energy arrows to boost the speed, they must end the circuit in the least time possible, being challenged on reflexes to skip the obstacles in incredible high speeds.
  • Grab All: Grab all items you can, as your agility and mind are challenged.
  • Stunt: It will be necessary cold blood to deal with all obstacles and still make some smooth acrobatic movements. Pressure is up your combo multipliers grows
  • One hit: Simply skip the most barriers as you can to stand still. The longer you stand, the higher your score.

Toons Summer Games 2012

Knowing the English and their talent for expression, at least one announcer during the 2012 Olympic Games in London will probably refer to Michael Phelps as "a pretty good swimmer". If you require a little more color in your cross-national competition, Toons Summer Games 2012 is here to give you as much as you can possibly handle in a mobile game. Ten events (including BMX, which has only been in the real Olympics for two cycles) and a handful of certifiably zany characters should keep you entertained, or at least distract your kids for a while. Toons Summer Games 2012 is a reasonable 99¢ at the moment.

Whether you’re looking to kill some time or beat the best in the world, you'll find it amongst the different game modes and the variety of athletic events this game has to offer.

Toons summer Games 2012 includes:

  • Swimming
  • BMX
  • Ping Pong
  • Canoe
  • Weightlifting
  • Hammer throw
  • And more.

Letris 2 by Noodlecake

Tetris. Scrabble. The two games have been a haven for the brainy and the bored for decades, but never have the two met... until now. Letris 2 continues the tradition of its predecessor by combining Tetris' falling block play mechanics with Scrabble's word creation goal, in a game that requires vocabulary, reflexes and quick thinking. The new WordMatrix mode provides a less stressful playing experience for those who want to take things a little slower. The game is free, but requires an in-app purchase after the first set of levels.

Build words to keep the screen clean and tidy as long as possible. Do you like word puzzles? Letris 2 provides an awesome twist on the puzzles you are used to. Three completely different modes will keep you playing for hours. Do you like the relaxed games where you can try to create long words without pressure? Then try the calming WordMatrix mode. You'll be trying to remove as many letters from a full board with no time constraint. Do you like solving enigmas? Acronymus is the word puzzle for you. You'll be given a few letters to make words out of, and you must use all of the letters.

Pocket RPG

We've covered Pocket RPG before, but back then it was limited to the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play. No longer - the game is now available to many more devices. Imagine a combination of the dual-stick shooter (like Geometry Wars or Gun Bros) and old-school dungeon crawling, and you've got Pocket RPG. The standard mage, ranger and warrior classes combine with full 3D graphics for an old-school setting with modern mechanics. This one's been hanging around on iOS for a while, but considering the rave reviews it's been giving, we'll just consider it fashionably late. Pocket RPG is an affordable $1.99.

Enter a world overrun by hordes of monsters. Optimized for Xperia Play

  • The Blade Master: A duel wielding melee specialist. He survives by clearing swathes of enemies with each of his mighty strikes. He has devastating special moves which skillful players will be able to use to decimate their foes.
  • The Dark Ranger: A deadly archer who can summon waves of arrows that bounce, seek and split. Perforate your enemies with dense walls of arrowy death.
  • The Battle Mage: A powerful, but fragile, nuker who controls the forces of fire, ethereal, ice and lightning to obliterate groups of enemies. Charge up her spells to critical levels and unleash maximum destruction.

Zoo Defenders

Tower defense games have seen every possible variation of setting and theme in the last few years. But the last time you went to the zoo, didn't you think it would be at least 30% more awesome if the animals could shoot at you? That seems to be the inspiration behind Zoo Defenders, where the more amiable animals have to fend off the likes of bears and yetis. The game is free, but commenters say the Facebook integration is a little heavy-handed.

Monkeys throwing mud, chickens shooting eggs and rams laying massive head butts sound like fun yet? Do it all and MORE in Zoo Defenders. As the petting zoo animals tuck into their cozy pens, invisible eyes peer in from outside the gates. Why do those animals get to have it all? Regular meals, clean water, and most of all, adoring petting instead of shoos and shouts! It’s time for this petting zoo to get a little wild. Will the docile defenders rise up to defend their cushy lifestyle from an onslaught of bears, rats and evil yetis? Find out in Zoo Defenders – a brand new take on tower defense games, chock-full of humor and intense strategy.

Gravity Ninja

Remember that moment in Sonic the Hedgehog when you desperately searched for something, anything to keep you from falling onto the sharp spikes at the bottom of the pit? This game is that moment, stretched out across multiple levels of tension and item gathering. Help the nameless ninja (who seems to have escaped from Major Mayhem up there) to avoid his fate in Gravity Ninja. The graphics are surprisingly smooth and appealing, especially for a free game.

Play as a brave Ninja whose goal is to collect different kinds of coins, gold bars, diamonds and various bonuses. Defy the law of gravity and prevent ninja from falling onto a lethally dangerous shurikens, spiky dragon or sharp spikes. Three different and colorful locations will amaze you with eye-popping cartoon graphics and dynamic game-play.

Control your party with a mix of classes, spells and abilities, roam and crawl though 400 maps, and beat the living snot out of any monster unwise enough to get between you and some upgraded loot. Oh, there's probably some kind of story in there too (five will get you ten there's orphans involved). Inotia saga brought to the next level in the fourth RPG adventure. Which side will you choose when the two forces rise again? Stride along with Kiyan, the Shadow Tribe's virtuoso, and Eara, the influential Channel of Light, in their fantasy adventure story.
