One of the new features that ships with Jelly Bean is Google's Sound Search widget that helps identify songs after listening to short samples. If you've ever used SoundHound or Shazam, you know exactly what this does. The difference is this widget is pre-installed on Jelly Bean, comes directly from Google, and hooks right into Google Play.

As it turns out, the widget works on ICS as well. I looked into the package and saw that compatibility goes back as far as Honeycomb, so I'm guessing it will install there too (sorry, no Gingerbread or below). I, however, don't have Honeycomb devices left anymore, so I have tested it on the EVO LTE running ICS, and it worked like a charm.

If you want to check out Sound Search (that's the official name, not Google Ears), just grab the APK compiled by lbrfabio. There's no need for root, manual pushing of libraries, or any hackery whatsoever - he's taken care of that. Just download and install.

I have installed Jelly Bean on my Galaxy Nexus. I can see GoogleEars.apk in /system/app, but I can't put Sound Search widget on screen, because I can't see it in widgets. Any help?

It is frozen by Google on non-US phones, you must use Titanium Backup to unfreeze it :)

    mirror 1

    works on evo lte
showed up after device restart on xoom (4.0.4)

    both are stock, non rooted.

Not working on my phone. Not in the US now.

  • vs8

Ugh. I installed this on a Galaxy S2 running CM9. It doesn't work. I can't see it under "my apps" on Play but Titanium Backup sees it and it's not frozen.

I'll restart the phone to see if it works.

    • michael interbartolo

only shows up as widget after a reboot.

  • vs8

    Yes, restarting the phone worked.

  • Adrian Benko

Titanium Backup defrost application. It's working now, thanks.

So this brings you to Google play to buy the song. What happens if they don't have a listing, can it still detect it, and if so where does it send you?

If you live in another country, what happens, as there is no google music store access?

Why don't you install, find out and tell us?

    • TheWhiteLotus

I'm pretty sure that it will still find song that aren't in the Play Store, but just bring you to a page that says "not found" in the PS.

    • http://twitter.com/ntlve Love Lindström

The widget is able to identify most songs but clicking the widget after a successful identification brings you to the frontpage of play store with no indication of loading the song or anything.

    • Knlegend1

If its not in the play store it will not find if from my experiments. Just mean google needs to step their game up. I'm sure by the time 4.1 is more mainstream it will be though.

It is faster than SoundHound and works perfectly on my nexus s.

  • Terry Cameron

Works for me in Canada on my Nexus S with ICS 4.0.4. Of course the store doesn't work, but it shows me the song!

  • HotInEER

Worked for me on my Samsung Galaxy S3, non rooted.  It's very quick....and accurate form the test I ran.  I use to love Sound hound premium, but, it has gotten very slow lately and too busy with all the ads.

  • Gregori Dwdk

After reebooting the widget apeared... (CM9 nightly on Captivate).

Won't work in the UK though!!!

I tried a German song (Ich + Ich - Du erinnerst mich an Liebe), quite a popular song a few years ago, wasn't found by it. Soundhound found it relatively fast, so I guess it's only gonna find what it has in the store.

  • GazaIan

This widget was pretty damn good, worked with every song I threw at it but it had one major flaw; No way to access history.

  • http://www.247smartphone.com/ Flavio

It works just fine on Android 3.2 (HTC Flyer) too even though no Play Music links from Italy. However, Soundhound gives a lot more info that hopefully will be added to Sound Search too (lyrics, tour dates, share options, videos, ...).

  • Knlegend1

Now all I need is a google now .apk lol.

  • Jure Šuklje

I'm from Slovenia and it works perfect! It's really fast, but since I can't have Google Music, tapping on the song takes me to Google Play main screen. I still love it, though. ;)

What is with that song, The Night Out? I've seen it in so many things to do with Android and such, like in a HTC advert.

  • beadmaster

Not sure what crap I just downloaded, but it had better not be a virus. Thanks for nothing.

  • beadmaster

Will someone please leave me a reply comment here on this comment and tell me how to get this suspicious looking "download.exe" file that I got from mirror link #7 off of my phone? Thanks in advance...I don't know how to find it and when I attempted to delete it, my screen went black. NOT happy. Hoping no stupid virus on my phone.
